MOND rotation curves for spiral galaxies with Cepheid-based distances

    Get PDF
Rotation curves for four spiral galaxies with recently determined Cepheid-based distances are reconsidered in terms of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). For two of the objects, NGC 2403 and NGC 7331, the rotation curves predicted by MOND are compatible with the observed curves when these galaxies are taken to be at the Cepheid distance. For NGC 3198, the largest distance for which reasonable agreement is obtained is 10% smaller than the Cepheid-based distance; i.e., MOND clearly prefers a smaller distance. This conclusion is unaltered when new near-infrared photometry of NGC 3198 is taken as the tracer of the stellar mass distribution. For the large Sc spiral, NGC 2841, MOND requires a distance which is at least 20% larger than the Cepheid-based distance. However, the discrepancy of the Tully-Fisher and SNIa distances with the Cepheid determination casts some doubt upon the Cepheid method in this case.Comment: Accepted for publication in astronomy and astrophysics 9 pages, 9 figure

Knowledge management and gamification in Pharma: an approach in pandemic times to develop product quality reviews

    Get PDF
The Pharma sector is a much‑regulated market, and this means that this industry must test their products to comply with existing standards to assure the required level of quality and safety before being authorized to lunch those products to the market. Supply chains, data integrity, and tightening regulations are just examples of business process issues that affect quality strategies on a day‑to‑day basis. Besides, regulatory bodies are increasingly focused not only on compliance but also on building a culture of quality management. In this domain, the Quality Management System (QMS)is a well‑known system to support processes, procedures, and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and objectives. The QMS also drives consistent metrics, risk calculations, and other trend analysis in developing periodical Product Quality Reviews (PQRs), usually corresponding to one year periods, related to the product and with its active substance. The PQRs development process requires proper management of knowledge so that it can be replicated in different activities. This paper proposes the adoption of Gamification techniques in each phase of PQRs. In pandemic times, it is importante to improve the performance of each activity, gathering the engagement of the employees. Gamification is usually related to employee motivation, which, in turn, is conducive to the achievement of better results in the organization. In this context, it is necessary to understand how the commitment of stakeholders evolves and if the application of Gamification techniques allows enhancing this variable, taking the evolution of the performance as another variable that could be evaluated. This paper focuses on innovation in the area of knowledge management, based on the projection of a Gamified model related to managing activities of a PQR development project at the level of the active substance. The paper presents a case study where the proposed model was applied to analyze the performance achieves in a national pharmaceutical industry in Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Performance Evaluation of Vision-Based Algorithms for MAVs

    Get PDF
An important focus of current research in the field of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) is to increase the safety of their operation in general unstructured environments. Especially indoors, where GPS cannot be used for localization, reliable algorithms for localization and mapping of the environment are necessary in order to keep an MAV airborne safely. In this paper, we compare vision-based real-time capable methods for localization and mapping and point out their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, we describe algorithms for state estimation, control and navigation, which use the localization and mapping results of our vision-based algorithms as input.Comment: Presented at OAGM Workshop, 2015 (arXiv:1505.01065

The Smart Stage: Designing 3D interaction metaphors for immersive and ubiquitous music systems

    Get PDF
This conceptual paper describes a work in progress in the process of design and implementation of the Smart Stage, an interactive music system prototype for collaborative musical creativity in immersive and ubiquitous environments. This system is intended to have a low entry barrier, thus more forgiving to users with lesser experience or knowledge in music, and it is designed with affordances to support intuitive progress in improvisational performance in a collaborative setting. We present a preliminary technical overview of the system and a first case study of a 3D interaction metaphor for granular synthesis, developed for this environment.Innovation Agency (Agência de Inovação, ADI, Portugal) and Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional (QREN, Portugal): VisualYzARt: Visual programming framework for augmented reality and ubiquitous natural user interfaces (QREN-ADI ref: 23201) and COMPETE - Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade (POFC

Mental illness and comorbidities, aspects of initial evaluation

    Get PDF
Mental Illness is a public problem in western societies. Recent reports say that the most frequent conditions of psychiatric hospitalization are related to elderly, over 65 years old, diagnosed with dementia, other organic disorders and depression. And we are seeing increasingly in episodes of urgency, consumption of psychoactive drugs, which can foster the emergence of other comorbidities. The aim of this study was to characterize from a socio-demographic, clinical and functional point of view, older people who staged an emergency episode in a psychiatric hospital. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study. The sample consisted of 99 elderly people involved in a psychiatric emergency episode in the biennium 2013/2014 and data were collected from the initial evaluation form (IE). Results: People with dementia have more associated diseases than others with other mental Illnesses. Some are at higher risk for potential episodes of falls and loss of functionality and associated factors. Conclusion. More cognitive and functional impairment, evidenced in the functional dependency cycle. The quality of care in later age, requires a multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach. Initial assessment must be complete and holistic in order to give the best care.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Hepatite Sifilítica: uma Complicação Rara da Sífilis Secundária. O Reporte de um Caso

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum, progressing through active and latent stages if left untreated. Hepatic involvement can occur in secondary syphilis, but this is an uncommon complication, with few published case reports. A 34-year-old man without significant medical history was admitted to the gastroenterology department with a 2-week history of unexplained jaundice and acute cholestatic hepatitis. He also presented with erythematous papules and plaques in the genital area, suggestive of secondary syphilis. T. pallidum hemaglutination assay and venereal disease research laboratory test were both positive, the latter with a 1:16 titer. The diagnosis of secondary syphilis with hepatic involvement was considered. The improvement of cutaneous and laboratory findings after intramuscular benzathine penicillin injection supported this hypothesis. Symptomatic cholestatic hepatitis is a rare feature of the systemic spectrum of secondary syphilis. The clinical and laboratorial response after penicillin treatment is a strong clue for this diagnosis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Factors affecting seismic response of submarine slopes

    Get PDF
The response of submerged slopes on the continental shelf to seismic or storm loading has become an important element in the risk assessment for offshore structures and 'local' tsunami hazards worldwide. The geological profile of these slopes typically includes normally consolidated to lightly overconsolidated soft cohesive soils with layer thickness ranging from a few meters to hundreds of meters. The factor of safety obtained from pseudo-static analyses is not always a useful measure for evaluating the slope response, since values less than one do not necessarily imply slope failure with large movements of the soil mass. This paper addresses the relative importance of different factors affecting the response of submerged slopes during seismic loading. The analyses use a dynamic finite element code which includes a constitutive law describing the anisotropic stress-strain-strength behavior of normally consolidated to lightly overconsolidated clays. The model also incorporates anisotropic hardening to describe the effect of different shear strain and stress histories as well as bounding surface principles to provide realistic descriptions of the accumulation of the plastic strains and excess pore pressure during successive loading cycles. The paper presents results from parametric site response analyses on slope geometry and layering, soil material parameters, and input ground motion characteristics. The predicted maximum shear strains, permanent deformations, displacement time histories and maximum excess pore pressure development provide insight of slope performance during a seismic event

Docking And Molecular Dynamic Of Microalgae Compounds As Potential Inhibitors Of Beta-Lactamase

Bacterial resistance is responsible for a wide variety of health problems, both in children and adults. The persistence of symptoms and infections are mainly treated with beta-lactam antibiotics. The increasing resistance to those antibiotics by bacterial pathogens generated the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), an actual public health problem. This is due to rapid mutations of bacteria when exposed to antibiotics. In this case, beta-lactamases are enzymes used by bacteria to hydrolyze the beta-lactam rings present in the antibiotics. Therefore, it was necessary to explore novel molecules as potential beta-lactamases inhibitors to find antibacterial compounds against infection caused by ESBLs. A computational methodology based on molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations was used to find new microalgae metabolites inhibitors of beta-lactamase. Six 3D beta-lactamase proteins were selected, and the molecular docking revealed that the metabolites belonging to the same structural families, such as phenylacridine (4-Ph), quercetin (Qn), and cryptophycin (Cryp), exhibit a better binding score and binding energy than commercial clinical medicine beta-lactamase inhibitors, such as clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam. These results indicate that 4-Ph, Qn, and Cryp molecules, homologous from microalgae metabolites, could be used, likely as novel beta-lactamase inhibitors or as structural templates for new in-silico pharmaceutical designs, with the possibility of combatting beta-lactam resistanc
