Evaluating the Location Efficiency of Arabian and African Seaports Using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)
In this paper the efficiency and performance is evaluated for 22 seaports in the region of East Africa and the Middle East. The aim of our study is to compare seaports situated on the maritime trade road between the East and the West. These are considered as middledistance ports at which goods from Europe and Far East/Australia can be exchanged and transhipped to all countries in the Middle East and East Africa. All these seaports are regional coasters, and dhow trade was built on these locations, leading this part of the world to become an important trade centre. Data was collected for 6 years (2000-2005) and a non-parametric linear programming method, DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) is applied. The ultimate goal of our study is: 1) to estimate the performance levels of the ports under consideration. Hepatite Sifilítica: uma Complicação Rara da Sífilis Secundária. O Reporte de um Caso
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum, progressing through active and latent stages if left untreated. Hepatic involvement can occur in secondary syphilis, but this is an uncommon complication, with few published case reports. A 34-year-old man without significant medical history was admitted to the gastroenterology department with a 2-week history of unexplained jaundice and acute cholestatic hepatitis. He also presented with erythematous papules and plaques in the genital area, suggestive of secondary syphilis. T. pallidum hemaglutination assay and venereal disease research laboratory test were both positive, the latter with a 1:16 titer. The diagnosis of secondary syphilis with hepatic involvement was considered. The improvement of cutaneous and laboratory findings after intramuscular benzathine penicillin injection supported this hypothesis. Symptomatic cholestatic hepatitis is a rare feature of the systemic spectrum of secondary syphilis. The clinical and laboratorial response after penicillin treatment is a strong clue for this diagnosis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fatal gemcitabine-induced pulmonary toxicity in metastatic gallbladder adenocarcinoma
Gemcitabine is a chemotherapy agent that may cause unpredictable side effects. In this report, we describe a fatal gemcitabine-induced pulmonary toxicity in a patient with gallbladder metastatic adenocarcinoma. A 72-year-old patient was submitted to an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and a tubular adenocarcinoma in the gallbladder was incidentally diagnosed. CT scan and ultrasound before the surgery did not show any tumor. After the surgery a Pet scan was positive for a hot-spot in the left colon. The colonic lesion was conveniently removed and the histology evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma tubular. The patient was then submitted to three sections of 1,600 mg/m2 of gemcitabine with intervals of 1 week. Three weeks later he developed severe respiratory distress. A helicoidal CT scan showed diffuse and severe interstitial pneumonitis, and lung biopsy confirmed accelerated usual interstitial pneumonia consistent with drug-induced toxicity. The patient presented unfavorable evolution with progressive worsening of respiratory function, hypotension, and renal failure. He died 1 month later in spite of methylprednisolone pulse therapy, large spectrum antimicrobial therapy, and full support of respiratory, hemodynamic and renal systems. Gemcitabine-induced pulmonary toxicity is usually a dramatic condition. Physicians should suspect pulmonary toxicity in patients with respiratory distress after gemcitabine chemotherapy, mainly in elderly patients
A novel PCR-based method for high throughput prokaryotic expression of antimicrobial peptide genes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To facilitate the screening of large quantities of new antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), we describe a cost-effective method for high throughput prokaryotic expression of AMPs. EDDIE, an autoproteolytic mutant of the N-terminal autoprotease, Npro, from classical swine fever virus, was selected as a fusion protein partner. The expression system was used for high-level expression of six antimicrobial peptides with different sizes: Bombinin-like peptide 7, Temporin G, hexapeptide, Combi-1, human Histatin 9, and human Histatin 6. These expressed AMPs were purified and evaluated for antimicrobial activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two or four primers were used to synthesize each AMP gene in a single step PCR. Each synthetic gene was then cloned into the pET30a/His-EDDIE-GFP vector via an <it>in vivo </it>recombination strategy. Each AMP was then expressed as an Npro fusion protein in <it>Escherichia coli</it>. The expressed fusion proteins existed as inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm and the expression levels of the six AMPs reached up to 40% of the total cell protein content. On <it>in vitro </it>refolding, the fusion AMPs was released from the C-terminal end of the autoprotease by self-cleavage, leaving AMPs with an authentic N terminus. The released fusion partner was easily purified by Ni-NTA chromatography. All recombinant AMPs displayed expected antimicrobial activity against <it>E. coli</it>, <it>Micrococcus </it>luteus and <it>S. cerevisia</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The method described in this report allows the fast synthesis of genes that are optimized for over-expression in <it>E. coli </it>and for the production of sufficiently large amounts of peptides for functional and structural characterization. The Npro partner system, without the need for chemical or enzymatic removal of the fusion tag, is a low-cost, efficient way of producing AMPs for characterization. The cloning method, combined with bioinformatic analyses from genome and EST sequence data, will also be useful for screening new AMPs. Plasmid pET30a/His-EDDIE-GFP also provides green/white colony selection for high-throughput recombinant AMP cloning.</p
Low frequency of TERT promoter mutations in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs).
Somatic mutations in the promoter region of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene, mainly at positions c. − 124 and
c. − 146 bp, are frequent in several human cancers; yet its presence in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) has not been
reported to date. Herein, we searched for the presence and clinicopathological association of TERT promoter mutations in
genomic DNA from 130 bona fide GISTs. We found TERT promoter mutations in 3.8% (5/130) of GISTs. The c. − 124C4T
mutation was the most common event, present in 2.3% (3/130), and the c. − 146C4T mutation in 1.5% (2/130) of GISTs.
No significant association was observed between TERT promoter mutation and patient’s clinicopathological features. The present
study establishes the low frequency (4%) of TERT promoter mutations in GISTs. Further studies are required to confirm our
findings and to elucidate the hypothetical biological and clinical impact of TERT promoter mutation in GIST pathogenesis.This project was partially supported by Barretos Cancer Hospital internal

Impact of dietary incorporation of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) and exogenous enzymes on broiler performance, carcass traits and meat quality
This study assessed the effect of Spirulina
(Arthrospira platensis), individually and in combination
with exogenous enzymes, on growth
performance, carcass traits, and meat quality of broiler
chickens. One hundred and twenty Ross 308 male
chickens were allocated into 40 battery brooders, with 3
birds per cage, and fed ad libitum a corn-based diet
during the first 21 D of the trial. The experimental period
lasted from day 21 to 35, during which birds were fed 4
different diets: a corn-soybean basal diet, taken as the
control group, a basal diet containing 15% Spirulina
(MA), a basal diet containing 15% Spirulina plus 0.005%
Rovabio Excel AP (MAR), and a basal diet containing
15% Spirulina plus 0.01% lysozyme (MAL). Body weight
gain (P , 0.001) and feed conversion rate (P , 0.001)
were improved in control chickens, when compared with
those fed with Spirulina. In addition, Spirulina increased
the length of duodenum plus jejunum in relation to the
other treatment (P , 0.01). Chickens on the MAL diet showed a considerable increase in digesta viscosity
(P , 0.05) compared with the control group. Breast and
thigh meats from chickens fed with Spirulina, with or
without the addition of exogenous enzymes, had higher
values of yellowness (b*) (P , 0.001), total carotenoids
(P , 0.001), and saturated fatty acids (P , 0.001),
whereas n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (P , 0.01) and
a-tocopherol (P , 0.001) decreased, when compared
with the control. In conclusion, the incorporation of 15%
Spirulina in broiler diets, individually or combined with
exogenous enzymes, reduced birds’ performance through
a higher digesta viscosity, which is likely associated with
the gelation of microalga indigestible proteins. In addition,
cell wall of Spirulina was successfully broken by the
addition of lysozyme, but not by Rovabio Excel AP.
Therefore, we anticipate that the combination of lysozyme
with an exogenous specific peptidase could improve
the digestibility of proteins from this microalga and

Neuropsychiatric symptoms of the elderly with Alzheimer's disease and the family caregivers' distress
ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the relationship between the distress of the family caregiver and the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted in the Geriatric and Dementias Clinic of a general tertiary hospital, with 96 elderly people with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia and their family caregivers. Questionnaires to characterize the elderly and caregivers, and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory were used. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation test were performed. Results: 68.7% of the elderly were women, average age 80.8 years, 56.2% had Alzheimer's disease and 43.7%, mixed dementia. Among caregivers, 90.6% were women, average age 56, 70.8% took care of parents and 64.6% lived with the elderly. There was a strong (r = 0.82) and significant (p <0.01) correlation between the total score on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and the total score on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Distress and strong (r = 0.80) and significant (p <0 01) correlation between the total score on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Distress and the number of neuropsychiatric symptoms, i.e., the higher the number, frequency and severity of these symptoms in the elderly, the more intense is the caregiver distress. Conclusion: the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in the elderly was related to increased distress in caregivers
Perspectives on the use of transcriptomics to advance biofuels
As a field within the energy research sector, bioenergy is continuously expanding. Although much has been achieved and the yields of both ethanol and butanol have been improved, many avenues of research to further increase these yields still remain. This review covers current research related with transcriptomics and the application of this high-throughput analytical tool to engineer both microbes and plants with the penultimate goal being better biofuel production and yields. The initial focus is given to the responses of fermentative microbes during the fermentative production of acids, such as butyric acid, and solvents, including ethanol and butanol. As plants offer the greatest natural renewable source of fermentable sugars within the form of lignocellulose, the second focus area is the transcriptional responses of microbes when exposed to plant hydrolysates and lignin-related compounds. This is of particular importance as the acid/base hydrolysis methods commonly employed to make the plant-based cellulose available for enzymatic hydrolysis to sugars also generates significant amounts of lignin-derivatives that are inhibitory to fermentative bacteria and microbes. The article then transitions to transcriptional analyses of lignin-degrading organisms, such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium, as an alternative to acid/base hydrolysis. The final portion of this article will discuss recent transcriptome analyses of plants and, in particular, the genes involved in lignin production. The rationale behind these studies is to eventually reduce the lignin content present within these plants and, consequently, the amount of inhibitors generated during the acid/base hydrolysis of the lignocelluloses. All four of these topics represent key areas where transcriptomic research is currently being conducted to identify microbial genes and their responses to products and inhibitors as well as those related with lignin degradation/formation.clos
