Osteoid osteoma of acetabulum a rare presentation

    Get PDF
Abstract The case of a relatively frequent benign osteoblastic tumour, osteoid osteoma at an atypical site is presented. It was in a 20 year old man who attended the outpatient department of Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi with pain in left groin since last 6 months which often occurred at night and was relieved by taking NSAIDs. X-ray failed to reveal the cause. CT scan showed central radiolucent nidus with surrounding sclerosis suggestive of osteoid osteoma in the left acetabulum. Acetabulum is a rare site for osteoid osteoma, the usual sites are diaphysis of long bones. Hence, the diagnosis is often difficult and delayed in such cases. CT scan, Bone scan and MRI, helped in diagnosing the condition. Resection of the lesion by open technique under fluoroscopic control was performed and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis

    Get PDF
Women empowerment has attracted the attention of researchers as an active area of research since 1980s. It can be viewed as an ultimate end as well as a mean to achieve other development goals. The present study is an attempt to investigate how consciousness /sensitization of women about their rights, economic empowerment of women and women’s overall development can be helpful in achieving the goal of women’s empowerment. The study uses data for the period of 1996 to 2009 for Pakistan. Empirical results reveal that consciousness of women about their rights, economic empowerment of women and women’s overall development have positive and significant effect on women’s empowerment as measured by Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) index. Granger Causality Test confirms the existence of bi-directional causality between women’s overall development and women’s empowerment. A unidirectional causality exists between sensitization of women and women’s empowerment

This study aims to investigate the role of economic growth and inflation in explaining the prevalence of poverty in Pakistan. ARDL bound testing approach to co-integration confirms the existence of long run relationship among the variables of poverty, economic growth, inflation, investment and trade openness over the period of 1972-2008. Empirical results show that economic growth and investment have negative and inflation has positive impact on poverty. The effect of trade openness on poverty is insignificant in this study. The short run analysis reveals that economic growth has negative and inflation has positive impact on poverty whereas the role of investment and trade openness in poverty reduction in short run is not significant.Poverty, Inflation, Economic Grovvth, Pakistan, Macroeconomic Policy, Welfare, Trade Openness

Purpose: To determine the urease-inhibitory activity and chemical constituents of fractions of Calligonum polygonoides and Crateva adansonii separated by physical properties. Methods: The anti-urease activities of different fractions of the plants (methanol, n-hexane, CHCl3, nbutanol) were evaluated using a standard procedure. The chemical constituents of the extracts with the highest urease-inhibitory activity were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: The n-hexane fractions of both plants had higher urease-inhibitory activity and a lower halfmaximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) than the other extracts. GC-MS evaluation revealed that nhexane fraction of C. polygonoides was rich in fatty acids (39.36 %), sterols (22.29 %), long chain alkanes (98.5 %), and a few volatiles (5.26 %), while the n-hexane fraction of C. adansonii had high levels of alkanes (35.03 %), sterols (10.46 %), fatty acid esters (46.82 %), and triterpenes (23.76 %). Conclusion: The n-hexane fractions of the plants demonstrate high urease-inhibitory activity. Thus, these plant-based anti-urease fractions can potentially serve as a starting point for the development of novel antibacterial agents with enhanced efficacy and reduced antibiotic resistance in the treatment of pathological conditions and infections associated with urease

In the present research, the steroidal anti-asthmatic drug beclomethasone dipropionate was subjected to microbial biotransformation by Aspergillus niger. Beclomethasone dipropionate was transformed into various metabolites first time from microbial transformation. New drug metabolites produced can act as new potential drug molecules and can replace the old drugs in terms of safety, efficacy, and least resistance. They were purified by preparative thin layer chromatography technique, and their structures were elucidated using modern spectroscopic techniques, such as 13C NMR, 1H NMR, HMQC, HMQC, COSY, and NOESY, and mass spectrometry, such as EI-MS. Four metabolites were purified: (i) beclomethasone 17-monopropionate, (ii) beclomethasone 21-monopropionate, (iii) beclomethasone, and (iv) 9beta,11beta-epoxy-17,21-dihydroxy-16beta-methylpregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione 21-propionate

Purpose: To compare oral bioavailability and pharmacokinetic parameters of different lornoxicam formulations and to assess similarity in plasma level profiles by statistical techniques. Methods: An open-label, two-period crossover trial was followed in 24 healthy Pakistani volunteers (22 males, 2 females). Each participant received a single dose of lornoxicam controlled release (CR) microparticles and two doses (morning and evening) of conventional lornoxicam immediate release (IR) tablet formulation. The microparticles were prepared by spray drying method. The formulations were administered again in an alternate manner after a washout period of one week. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined by Kinetica 4.0 software using plasma concentration-time data. Moreover, data were statistically analyzed at 90 % confidence interval (CI) and Schuirmann’s two one-sided t-test procedure.Results: Peak plasma concentration (Cmax) was 20.2 % lower for CR formulation compared to IR formulation (270.90 ng/ml vs 339.44 ng/ml, respectively) while time taken to attain Cmax (tmax) was 5.25 and 2.08 h, respectively. Area under the plasma drug level versus time (AUC) curve was comparable for both CR and IR formulations. The 90 % confidence interval (CI) values computed for Cmax, AUC0-24, and AUC0- , after log transformation, were 87.21, 108.51 and 102.74 %, respectively, and were within predefined bioequivalence range (80 - 125 %).Conclusion: The findings suggest that CR formulation of lornoxicam did not change the overall pharmacokinetic properties of lornoxicam in terms of extent and rate of lornoxicam absorption. Keywords: Analgesic, Microparticles, Controlled release, Lornoxicam, NSAIDs, Pharmacokinetic

    Get PDF
Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) is the major cause of diarrhoea in neonatal animals. This study determined the prevalence, serological diversity, virulence gene profile and in-vitro antibiogram of ETEC isolates from diarrhoeic faeces of calves and lambs. The prevalence rate of ETEC in lambs was recorded 18.46 % with O8 as predominant serotype. However, in calves the prevalence rate was recorded 8.57 % with O15 and O26 as predominant serotypes. The antibiogram screening showed differential susceptibility pattern among ETEC isolates with highest resistance to ampicillin and highest sensitivity to enrofloxacin. In the present study, for the first time it was reported that the diarrhoea in calves and lambs occur due to virulent gene est not due to elt gene, which was absent in all the isolates
