Evaluation of anomalies observed on film from S-190A flight system calibration test
Due to a persistent problem of scratched film from testing of the Skylab S-190A system, a series of tests were designed to identify the cause of the film scratching. The procedures followed in this test for pretest handling and packaging of the film, the makeup of the rolls for processing, and the results of the processed film evaluation are reported
Compositional redistribution during casting of Hg sub 0.8 Cd sub 0.2 Te alloys
A series of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te ingots was cast both vertically and horizontally under well-defined thermal conditions by using a two-zone furnace with isothermal heat-pipe liners. The main objective of the experiments was to establish correlations between casting parameters and compositional redistribution and to develop ground-based data for a proposed flight experiment of casting of Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te alloys under reduced gravity conditions. The compositional variations along the axial and radial directions were determined by precision density measurements, infrared transmission spectra, and X-ray energy dispersion spectrometry. Comparison between the experimental results and a numerical simulation of the solidification process of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te is described
The NIF LinkOut Broker: A Web Resource to Facilitate Federated Data Integration using NCBI Identifiers
This paper describes the NIF LinkOut Broker (NLB) that has been built as part of the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) project. The NLB is designed to coordinate the assembly of links to neuroscience information items (e.g., experimental data, knowledge bases, and software tools) that are (1) accessible via the Web, and (2) related to entries in the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI’s) Entrez system. The NLB collects these links from each resource and passes them to the NCBI which incorporates them into its Entrez LinkOut service. In this way, an Entrez user looking at a specific Entrez entry can LinkOut directly to related neuroscience information. The information stored in the NLB can also be utilized in other ways. A second approach, which is operational on a pilot basis, is for the NLB Web server to create dynamically its own Web page of LinkOut links for each NCBI identifier in the NLB database. This approach can allow other resources (in addition to the NCBI Entrez) to LinkOut to related neuroscience information. The paper describes the current NLB system and discusses certain design issues that arose during its implementation

The risks confronted by grain and cotton farmers are of particular interest, given the changing role of the Government after passage of the 1996 Farm Act. With the shift toward less government intervention in the post-1996 Farm Act environment, a more sophisticated understanding of risk and risk management is important to help producers make better decisions in risky situations and to assist policymakers in assessing the effectiveness of different types of risk protection tools. In response, this report provides a rigorous, yet accessible, description of risk and risk management tools and strategies at the farm level. It also provides never-before-published data on farmers' assessments of the risks they face, their use of alternative risk management strategies, and the changes they would make if faced with financial difficulty. Advanced liquid oxygen (LO2) propellant conditioning concept testing
Advanced methods of liquid oxygen (LO2) propellant conditioning were studied as part of an effort for increasing reliability and operability while reducing cost of future heavy lift launch vehicles. The most promising conditioning concept evaluated was no-bleed (passive recirculation) followed by low-bleed, helium injection, and use of a recirculation line. Full-scale cryogenic testing was performed with a sloped feedline test article to validate models of behavior of LO2 in the feedline and to prove no-bleed feasibility. Test data are also intended to help generate design guidelines for the development of a main propulsion system feed duct. A design-of-experiments matrix of over 100 tests was developed to test all four propellant conditioning concepts and the impact of design parameters on the concepts. Liquid nitrogen was used as the test fluid. The work for this project was conducted from October 1992 through January 1994 at the hydrogen cold flow facility of the west test area of MSFC. Test data have shown that satisfactory temperatures are being obtained for the no-bleed conditioning concept
Advanced liquid Oxygen (LO2) propellant conditioning concept testing
Extensive testing was performed on the promising L02 propellant conditioning concept of passive recirculation (no-bleed). Data from the project is being used to further anchor models in L02 conditioning behavior and broaden the data base of no-bleed and low-bleed conditioning. Data base expansion includes results from testing the limits of no-bleed and low-bleed conditioning with various configuration changes to the test facility and designed test article. Configuration changes include low velocity effects in the recirculation loop above the test article, test article internal constriction impacts, test article out-of-plane effects, impact from an actual Titan L02 pump attachment, feed duct slope effects, and up-leg booster effects. LN2 was used as the test fluid. The testing was conducted between July 1994 and January 1995 at the west test area of Marshall Space Flight Center. Data have shown that in most cases passive recirculation was demonstrated when the aforementioned limits were applied
Constraining the fundamental parameters of the O-type binary CPD-41degr7733
Using a set of high-resolution spectra, we studied the physical and orbital
properties of the O-type binary CPD-41 7733, located in the core of \ngc. We
report the unambiguous detection of the secondary spectral signature and we
derive the first SB2 orbital solution of the system. The period is 5.6815 +/-
0.0015 d and the orbit has no significant eccentricity. CPD-41 7733 probably
consists of stars of spectral types O8.5 and B3. As for other objects in the
cluster, we observe discrepant luminosity classifications while using
spectroscopic or brightness criteria. Still, the present analysis suggests that
both components display physical parameters close to those of typical O8.5 and
B3 dwarfs. We also analyze the X-ray light curves and spectra obtained during
six 30 ks XMM-Newton pointings spread over the 5.7 d period. We find no
significant variability between the different pointings, nor within the
individual observations. The CPD-41 7733 X-ray spectrum is well reproduced by a
three-temperature thermal mekal model with temperatures of 0.3, 0.8 and 2.4
keV. No X-ray overluminosity, resulting e.g. from a possible wind interaction,
is observed. The emission of CPD-41 7733 is thus very representative of typical

Effect of heifer calving date on longevity and lifetime productivity
Longevity and lifetime productivity are important factors in profitability of the beef cow herd. Therefore, a concern for many producers is the productivity and longevity of the individual cow in their herd. The 2007-08 survey from National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) reported that the largest percentages of cows (33%) are culled because they do not become pregnant during the breeding season. It also reported that 15.6% of all culled cows leave the herd before 5 years of age, and an additional 31.8% leave the herd between 5 and 9 years of age. Research has reported that it takes 5 calves to pay for the development costs and annual maintenance of a replacement heifer (E.M. Mousel, Unpublished data). Therefore, to be sustainable, producers need to manage their herd to reduce the number of cows that are culled at a young age
Circumnuclear stellar population, morphology and environment of Seyfert 2 galaxies: an evolutionary scenario
We investigate the relation between the characteristics of the circumnuclear
stellar population and both the galaxy morphology and the presence of close
companions for a sample of 35 Seyfert 2 nuclei. Fifteen galaxies present
unambiguous signatures of recent episodes of star formation within 300
pc from the nucleus. When we relate this property with the Hubble type of the
host galaxy, we find that the incidence of recent circumnuclear star formation
increases along the Hubble sequence, and seems to be larger than in non-Seyfert
galaxies for the early Hubble types S0 and Sa, but similar to that in
non-Seyfert galaxies for later Hubble types. Both in early-type and late-type
Seyferts, the presence of recent star-formation is related to the galaxy
morphology in the inner few kiloparsecs, as observed in HST images through the
filter F606W by Malkan et al., who has assigned a late ``inner Hubble type'' to
most Seyfert 2s with recent nuclear star-formation. This new classification is
due to the presence of dust lanes and spiral structures in the inner region.
The presence of recent star formation in Seyfert 2 nuclei is also related to
interactions: among the 13 galaxies of the sample with close companions or in
mergers, 9 have recent star formation in the nucleus. These correlations
between the presence of companions, inner morphology and the incidence of
recent star formation suggest an evolutionary scenario in which the interaction
is responsible for sending gas inwards which both feeds the AGN and triggers
star-formation. The starburst then fades with time and the composite Seyfert 2
+ Starburst nucleus evolves to a ``pure'' Seyfert 2 nucleus with an old stellar

4He experiments can serve as a database for determining the three-nucleon force
We report on microscopic calculations for the 4He compound system in the
framework of the resonating group model employing realistic nucleon-nucleon and
three nucleon forces. The resulting scattering phase shifts are compared to
those of a comprehensive R-matrix analysis of all data in this system, which
are available in numerical form. The agreement between calculation and analysis
is in most cases very good. Adding three-nucleon forces yields in many cases
large effects. For a few cases the new agreement is striking. We relate some
differencies between calculation and analysis to specific data and discuss
neccessary experiments to clarify the situation. From the results we conclude
that the data of the 4He system might be well suited to determine the structure
