Marked Reduction in Prevalence of Malaria Parasitemia and Anemia in HIV-Infected Pregnant Women Taking Cotrimoxazole With Or Without Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine Intermittent Preventive Therapy during Pregnancy in Malawi
Background. Effectiveness of cotrimoxazole (CTX) compared with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) intermittent-preventive-therapy (IPTp) for malaria in HIV-infected pregnant women is unknown. We examined effectiveness of CTX with or without SP-IPTp versus SP-IPTp at reducing malaria parasitemia and anemia
Painting the Body: Feminist Musings on Visual Autographies
In this paper I look at autographical depictions of the body in the work of Mato Ioannidou, a Greek woman artist, who participated in a wider narrative-based project on visual and textual entanglements between life and art. The paper unfolds in three parts: first, I give an overview of Ioannidou’s artwork, making connections with significant events in her life; then I discuss feminist theorizations of embodiment and visual auto/biography; and finally I draw on insights from Spinozist feminist philosophers to discuss the artist’s portrayal of women’s bodies in three cycles of her work. What I argue is that the body becomes a centerpiece in the attempt to perceive connections between life and art through expressionism rather than representation

Henri Curiel, l’internationaliste
National audienceAn archaeological excavation carried out before road realignment, on the departmental road n°463, commune of Visseiche at "La Basse Chaussée", was the opportunity to study a section of the roman road Rennes-Angers. Excavation brought to light two phases of construction, the road conserving the same alignment. The neccesity to cross the valley of the Seiche conditioned the nature and technique of the différent phases of construction of the roman road. On the plateau, the metalling of the road was composed of a simple stone hardcore in direct contact with the bedrock. When the road approached the valley, this necessitated the création of a wooden framed causeway tomaintain laterally the road-way, the principal rôle being to reduce the slope on each side, then présent a horizontal road surface leading to spécifie structure on a river crossing. The first roadway is remarkable by the use as foundations timbers laid on the ground surface. The second roadway is characterised by the use of an imposing timber framework comprising longitudinal and transversal timbers connected vertical wooden piling. This structure Consolidated the causeway and raised the road surface above the waterline of theriver in times of flood. This "bridge-causeway" is punctuated by a "ponceau" which reduced latéral pressure from riverwater. Dendrochronological dating carried out on timber piling preserved on the lower part of the site, but belonging to severalconstruction phases or repairs to the road, indicates that construction commencée! at the end of the 2nd century BCUne fouille préventive, préalable à des travaux rectificatifs de la route départementale 463, sur lacommune deVisseiche, près du lieu-dit "La Basse Chaussée", a permis l'étude d'un tronçon de la voie antiqueRennes-Angers. Quantitative angiographic assessment of coronary anastomoses performed without cardiopulmonary bypass
AbstractBackground: The quality of the anastomosis performed during coronary artery bypass grafting without cardiopulmonary bypass is a current concern, and myocardial wall restraining devices have been designed to optimize results. A quantitative angiographic analysis was performed to assess coronary anastomoses performed on beating hearts. Methods: We studied 34 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting without cardiopulmonary bypass between February 1996 and April 1997. The left internal thoracic artery was anastomosed to the left anterior descending coronary artery in all patients. Coronary angiograms were performed 4 ± 2 days after the operation. The diameter of the anastomoses was quantified by computer-assisted analysis of grafts and native coronary arteries at the toe and heel of the anastomosis. Results: Five of the patients who underwent coronary artery bypass without a stabilizer (n = 20) had stenoses of the internal thoracic artery grafted to the left anterior descending coronary artery of more than 50% at the level of the anastomosis proper, 3 had stenoses at the heel of the coronary anastomosis, and 5 had stenoses at the toe. One of the patients in whom a stabilizer was used (n = 14) had a stenosis of more than 50% at the anastomosis, and 1 had stenosis at the heel. Eight patients in whom the anastomoses were performed without stabilization (8/20, 40%) had stenoses of more than 50%, whereas there was only 1 stenosis of more than 50% of coronary luminal diameter among the patients in whom the operation was performed with a stabilizer (P = .02). Conclusion: The quantitative angiographic evaluation suggests that left internal thoracic artery graft to left anterior descending coronary artery anastomoses have a lesser degree of intraluminal stenosis when performed with the use of a myocardial wall stabilizer.
