In this work we analyse the most important earthquakes of the 20th century occurred in the Altotiberina Valley in 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1948; in particular instrumental relocation and Ms magnitude estimation are re-evaluated. The area investigated, the Sansepolcro basin, is characterized by the presence of important earthquakes in the past with estimated intensity even larger than IX MCS (the 1352 Monterchi earthquake, the 1389 Boccaserriola, the 1458 Citta' di Castello, the 1781 Cagliese and the 1917 Monterchi-Citerna earthquakes, CPTI Working Group, 2004) and by a surprisingly scarce instrumental seismicity compared to the adjacent areas struck by high seismicity (Castello et al., 2005; Ciaccio et al., 2006). In particular, the area north of Sansepolcro has been struck in recent years by four minor sequences, occurred between 1987 and 2001 with magnitude ranging from Ml3.0 to Mw4.7. The relocation of these earthquakes is particularly critical and in an important issue. An instrumental and precise location is critical for the complexity of the problems associated with the study of seismograms prior to the rst half of the twentieth century and is relevant because in the surrounding regions higher seismicity is observed. Regarding this peculiarity of the area, it’s very important to detect the localization of the historical earthquakes: in particular, the 1917 event is often associated to the possibility that the regional low angle Altotiberina Fault (Barchi et al., 1998) is able or not to nucleate large- or moderate-magnitude events, being historically located close to its surface (Boncio and Lavecchia, 2000)

Ovarian cancer metastasis to the breast: a case report and review of the literature

Although ovarian cancer often presents as a widespread disease, metastases to the breast and/or axillary lymph nodes are a very rare event, accounting for only 0.03-0.6% of all breast cancers. Its early recognition and accurate distinction from primary breast cancer are of crucial importance to choose an adequate systemic therapy over unnecessary surgeries. We presented the case of a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with breast metastases 2 years after the diagnosis of advanced primary serous ovarian cancer. The patient underwent primary cytoreductive surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with bevacizumab, followed by bevacizumab maintenance for 18 months. After 2 years of negative follow-ups, the disease unexpectedly spread to the left breast and axillary lymph nodes. No axillary lymph node dissection or breast surgery was performed. The patient received axillary radiotherapy and multiple chemotherapy lines: gemcitabine/cisplatin, liposomal doxorubicin, topotecan, olaparib/cediranib, paclitaxel, and cisplatin. Unfortunately, none of these treatments improved her prognosis and she died 3 years after the disease recurrence. Ovarian cancer metastasis to the breast reveals a disseminated disease with a poor prognosis. Currently, no valid treatment options are available as the disease shows multidrug chemoresistance. In the era of precision medicine, the characterization of genetic and molecular markers may play a role in offering new promising targeted therapies

15N-Labelled Fertilizer Recovery by Sweet Sorghum in Mediterranean Climate

    Get PDF
A 15N-labelled fertilization trial was carried out on sweet sorghum, grown in semi-arid environments of southern Europe with the aim to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of the N-fertilisation technique under irrigation and different nitrogen fertilization rates, in factorial combination. A rainfed condition was compared with a full irrigation treatment (100% restoration of total crop water consumption), in a similar way, an unfertilized control was tested with respect to N application rates of 60 and 120 Kg ha-1, respectively. The fertilisation efficiency measured directly through the isotope discrimination technique was on average equal to 15%. The aliquot of nitrogen released by the fertiliser into the soil and not absorbed by the plant becomes part of the different components of the soil nitrogen balance, regardless of its origin

Crocus sativus L. Ecotypes from Mediterranean Countries: Phenological, Morpho-Productive, Qualitative and Genetic Traits

The characterization of C. sativus ecotypes is of great interest for preserving them from a possible genetic erosion due to the decrease of European cultivation surface. In this study, we evaluated four ecotypes from Italy (Sardinia and Abruzzo), Spain (Castilla-La Mancha), and Greece (Kozani) in order to detect the existence of variability and promote the biodiversity of this crop. Thirty-one traits related to saffron flowering, flower morphology, production of spice and daughter corms, vegetative development (leaf and corm traits), and spice quality, were evaluated. In addition, a genetic analysis through three PCR-based approaches, SSRs, RAPD, and SRAP was assessed. Results highlighted a phenotypic variation among ecotypes during two consecutive years. All the studied parameters were influenced by the ecotype except for the stamen length, color coordinates of tepals, leaf length, and leaf number per plant. Sardinia had a longer flowering interval, earlier flowering, and higher spice yield and quality than the other corm origins. The maximum values of morphological traits, such as stigma length, dry weight of stigmas, tepals, flowers and leaves, leaf area, and daughter corm weight were observed in the Abruzzo ecotype. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed a clear separation among ecotypes, in which Sardinia and Spain showed more similarities than Abruzzo and Kozani. Significant negative correlation was found between days to flower with stigma yield and quality. However, we could not find molecular markers discriminating among corm origins. In conclusion, this study suggests the importance of C. sativus ecotypes as precious source of biodiversity and bioactive compounds, and of their enhancement as fundamental prerequisite for a sustainable development strategy and as an agricultural diversification opportunity for growers

In this work we estimate the performance of a method for the detection of burst events in the data produced by interferometric gravitational wave detectors. We compute the receiver operating characteristics in the specific case of a simulated noise having the spectral density expected for Virgo, using test signals taken from a library of possible waveforms emitted during the collapse of the core of Type II Supernovae.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Talk given at the GWDAW2002 worksho

Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes in ovarian cancer.

    Get PDF
Several improvements in ovarian cancer treatment have been achieved in recent years, both in surgery and in combination chemotherapy with targeting. However, ovarian tumors remain the women's cancers with highest mortality rates. In this scenario, a pivotal role has been endorsed to the immunological environment and to the immunological mechanisms involved in ovarian cancer behavior. Recent evidence suggests a loss of the critical balance between immune-activating and immune-suppressing mechanisms when oncogenesis and cancer progression occur. Ovarian cancer generates a mechanism to escape the immune system by producing a highly suppressive environment. Immune-activated tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in ovarian tumor tissue testify that the immune system is the trigger in this neoplasm. The TIL mileau has been demonstrated to be associated with better prognosis, more chemosensitivity, and more cases of optimal residual tumor achieved during primary cytoreduction. Nowadays, scientists are focusing attention on new immunologically effective tumor biomarkers in order to optimize selection of patients for recruitment in clinical trials and to identify relationships of these biomarkers with responses to immunotherapeutics. Assessing this point of view, TILs might be considered as a potent predictive immunotherapy biomarker

Vulvar lipoma: rare case, rare location

    Get PDF
Background. Vulvar lipomas are very rare pathologies: indeed, only few cases are reported in the literature. Case presentation. We reported clinical, diagnostic and therapeutical choices of a 44-year aged patient with a rare abnormally sized vulvar lipoma. A Diamond-shaped skin incision was performed and the neoformation was removed without capsule lesions. A vaginal plastic skin-reducing was performed to reduce redundant tissue. The deep planes of the lesion have been reconstructed to avoid leakage. Conclusions. This kind of lipomas can be potentially diagnosed through clinical examination because of their specific characteristics. However, imaging is advisable to differentiate benign neoplasm from malignant one. Different approaches can be achieved for lipomas based on the size of lump, patient’s feelings and necessities and the operation goals; however, the complete surgical excision with the removal of capsules to prevent recurrence remains the treatment of choice for vulvar lipomas. Different surgical approaches aim to achieve better esthetical results, less scarring, and less colour discordance of the connected tissues post-surgery. Surgery is the gold standard for treatment of vulvar lesions. Currently, there is no evidence of long-term follow-up in the literature. We recommend an adequate counselling with the patient to understand their needs and encouraging them to seek medical advice and to tailor the treatment of such lesions

Calcineurin gamma catalytic subunit ppp3cc inhibition by mir-200c-3p affects apoptosis in epithelial ovarian cancer

    Get PDF
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) outpaces all the other forms of the female reproductive system malignancies. MicroRNAs have emerged as promising predictive biomarkers to therapeutic treatments as their expression might characterize the tumor stage or grade. In EOC, miR-200c is considered a master regulator of oncogenes or tumor suppressors. To investigate novel miR-200c-3p target genes involved in EOC tumorigenesis, we evaluated the association between this miRNA and the mRNA expression of several potential target genes by RNA-seq data of both 46 EOC cell lines from Cancer Cell line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and 456 EOC patient bio-specimens from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Both analyses showed a significant anticorrelation between miR-200c-3p and the protein phosphatase 3 catalytic subunit γ of calcineurin (PPP3CC) levels involved in the apoptosis pathway. Quantitative mRNA expression analysis in patient biopsies confirmed the inverse correlation between miR-200c-3p and PPP3CC levels. In vitro regulation of PPP3CC expression through miR-200c-3p and RNA interference technology led to a concomitant modulation of BCL2- and p-AKT-related pathways, suggesting the tumor suppressive role of PPP3CC in EOC. Our results suggest that inhibition of high expression of miR-200c-3p in EOC might lead to overexpression of the tumor suppressor PPP3CC and subsequent induction of apoptosis in EOC patients

Objectives: To investigate the role of quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in preoperative assessment of tumour aggressiveness in patients with endometrial cancer, correlating multiple parameters obtained from diffusion and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MR sequences with conventional histopathological prognostic factors and inflammatory tumour infiltrate. Methods: Forty-four patients with biopsy-proven endometrial cancer underwent preoperative MR imaging at 3T scanner, including DCE imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and intravoxel incoherent motion imaging (IVIM). Images were analysed on dedicated post-processing workstations and quantitative parameters were extracted: K-trans, K-ep, V-e and AUC from the DCE; ADC from DWI; diffusion D, pseudo diffusion D*, perfusion fraction f from IVIM and tumour volume from DWI. The following histopathological data were obtained after surgery: histological type, grading (G), lympho-vascular invasion (LVI), lymph node status, FIGO stage and inflammatory infiltrate. Results: ADC was significantly higher in endometrioid histology, G1-G2 (low grade), and stage IA. Significantly higher D* were found in endometrioid subptype, negative lymph nodes and stage IA. The absence of LVI is associated with higher f values. K-trans and V-e values were significantly higher in low grade. Higher D*, f and AUC occur with the presence of chronic inflammatory cells, D * was also able to distinguish chronic from mixed type of inflammation. Larger volume was significantly correlated with the presence of mixed-type inflammation, LVI, positive lymph nodes and stage >= IB.Conclusions: Quantitative biomarkers obtained from pre-operative DWI, IVIM and DCE-MR examination are an in vivo representation of the physiological and micro-structural characteristics of endometrial carcinoma allowing to obtain the fundamental parameters for stratification into Risk Classes.Advances in knowledge: Quantitative imaging biomarkers obtained from DWI, DCE and IVIM may improve preoperative prognostic stratification in patients with endometrial cancer leading to a more informed therapeutic choice
