This volume contains most of the links to the presentations delivered at this international workshop. This meeting was the second in the series following the previous I Encuentro Ib\'erico de Compstar, held at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2010. The main purpose of this meeting was to strengthen the scientific collaboration between the participants of the Iberian and the rest of the southern European branches of the European Nuclear Astrophysics network, formerly, COMPSTAR. This ESF (European Science Foundation) supported network has been crucial in helping to make a broader audience for the the most interesting and relevant research lines being developed currently in Nuclear Astrophysics, especially related to the physics of neutron stars. The program of the meeting was tailored to theoretical descriptions of the physics of neutron stars although some input from experimental observers and other condensed matter and optics areas of interest was also included.Comment: Journal of Physics: Conference Series Volume 342 (2012), Proceedings of the 2nd Iberian Nuclear Astrophysics Meeting on Compact Stars, 22-23 September 2011, Salamanca-Spain. Anisotropic thermal emission from magnetized neutron stars

The thermal emission from isolated neutron stars is not well understood. The X-ray spectrum is very close to a blackbody but there is a systematic optical excess flux with respect to the extrapolation to low energy of the best blackbody fit. This fact, in combination with the observed pulsations in the X-ray flux, can be explained by anisotropies in the surface temperature distribution. We study the thermal emission from neutron stars with strong magnetic fields in order to explain the origin of the anisotropy. We find (numerically) stationary solutions in axial symmetry of the heat transportequations in the neutron star crust and the condensed envelope. The anisotropy in the conductivity tensor is included consistently. The presence of magnetic fields of the expected strength leads to anisotropy in the surface temperature. Models with toroidal components similar to or larger than the poloidal field reproduce qualitatively the observed spectral properties and variability of isolated neutron stars. Our models also predict spectral features at energies between 0.2 and 0.6 keV.Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures, version accepted for publication in A&

These windings are crucial elements of synchronous motors and generators, playing an important role in the asynchronous startup of these machines as well as in their stability during load transients. However, the diagnosis of failures in such elements has barely been studied in the literature. This paper presents a method to diagnose the condition of damper bars in synchronous motors. It is based on the capture of the stator current of the machine during a direct startup and its further analysis in order to track the characteristic transient evolution of a particular fault-related component in the time-frequency map. The fact that the damper only carries significant current during the startup and little or no current, when the machine operates in steady state, makes this transient-based approach specially suited for the detection of such failure. The Hilbert-Huang transform (based on the empirical mode decomposition method) is proposed as a signal-processing tool. Simulation and experimental results on laboratory synchronous machines prove the validity of the approach for condition monitoring of such windings. © 2012 IEEE.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (MICINN) in the framework of the VI Plan Nacional de Investigacion Cientifica, Desarrollo e Innovacion Tecnologica 2008-2011. Mixed monolayer of DPPC and lysine-based cationic surfactants: An investigation into the antimicrobial activity

    Get PDF
In this paper, we report studies which aim to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the antimicrobial activity of three cationic lysine-based surfactants: LLM, LALM, and C6 (LL)2. To this end, a simple membrane model (i.e., 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-phosphatidylcholine, DPPC) was used to explore the monolayer properties at the air/liquid interface. Compression π-A isotherms of mixtures of DPPC/lysine surfactants at different pH showed an expansion of the DPPC monolayer, suggesting cationic lysine surfactant/DPPC interactions, which strongly depend on surfactant structure and hydrophobic interactions. Antimicrobial activity of the three surfactants has also been assessed with transmission electron microscopy, observing the effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The three surfactants caused various kinds of damage to the bacteria tested, such as structural alterations, leakage of internal material, and cell destruction.Authors have been supported by the CICYT Spanish Research Agency under the projects CTQ2009-14151-C02-01 and CTQ2010-14897 and by AGAUR Research Agency of the Generalitat de Catalunya under the project 2009 SRG 246Peer reviewe

Detection of Broken Rotor Bars in Nonlinear Startups of Inverter-Fed Induction Motors

[EN] Fault detection in induction motors powered by inverters operating in nonstationary regimes remains a challenge. The trajectory in the time-frequency plane of harmonics related to broken rotor bar develops very in proximity to the path described by the fundamental component. In addition, their energy is much lower than the amplitude of the first harmonic. These two characteristics make it challenging to observe them. The Dragon Transform (DT), here presented, is developed to overcome the described problem. In this article, the DT is assessed with nonlinear inverter-fed startups, where its high time and frequency resolutions facilitate the monitoring of fault harmonics even with highly adjacent trajectories to the first harmonic path.Fernández-Cavero, V.; Pons Llinares, J.; Duque-Perez, O.; Morinigo-Sotelo, D. Most of the works published deal with line-fed motors. Nevertheless, the number of inverterfed induction motors has significantly increased in recent years. Therefore, several fault detection techniques have been proposed lately for this type of motors, based mainly on an adequate input signal processing to obtain fault signatures in the time-frequency domain. In this paper, a comparison of time-frequency techniques applied to fault detection in inverter-fed induction motors in a transient state is presented. For that purpose, the techniques are applied to two current signals acquired from two induction motors with two types of faults: bar breakage and mixed eccentricity. The paper shows the particularities and special difficulties of diagnosing under this type of feeding, reviewing the works related to each technique. The strengths and weaknesses of these techniques are discussed with the goal of providing a criterion for its application in an industrial environment and guidance for future developments in this field. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad and in part by the FEDER program in the framework of the Proyectos I+D del Subprograma de Generacion de Conocimiento, Programa Estatal de Fomento de la Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnica de Excelencia under Grant DPI2014-52842-P.Fernandez-Cavero, V.; Morinigo-Sotelo, D.; Duque-Perez, O.; Pons Llinares, J.
