This thesis explores the impact of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, particularly inflammatory arthritis, on male sexual and reproductive health. Using a holistic approach, multiple studies were conducted to address critical clinical questions:How do immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and their pharmacological treatments affect male sexual and reproductive health outcomes? Is fertility impaired in males diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis? How does inflammatory arthritis impact male sexual health? Is methotrexate safe for men with immune-mediated diseases who wish to conceive? The chapters of this thesis delve into these questions, offering comprehensive insights into the intricate relationships between these diseases and male health. Through detailed analysis and rigorous research, this work sheds light on the often-overlooked aspects of male reproductive health in the context of inflammatory conditions. The findings underscore the importance of considering these factors in clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.<br/

Plasmonic nanodevice with magnetic funcionalities: fabrication and characterization

    Get PDF
We have designed and fabricated a nanodevice exhibiting simultaneously ferromagnetic properties of nanostructures with plasmonic properties of continuous films. Our device consists of an array of nanomagnets on top of a continuous plasmonic film. The patterned nanomagnets magnetic state is single domain and well-defined shape anisotropy. Despite the presence of the patterned media on top of the Au film, the system exhibits surface plasmon resonance characteristics of a continuous film, i.e., propagating surface plasmon-polaritons

Nationwide trends of invasive pneumococcal disease in Spain (2009-2019) in children and adults during the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era.

Introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has shown a marked reduction in the disease caused by vaccine serotypes in children providing herd protection to the elderly group. However, the emergence of non-vaccine serotypes is of great concern worldwide. This study includes national laboratory data from invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) cases affecting pediatric and adult population during 2009-2019. The impact of implementing different vaccine strategies for immunocompetent adults comparing Spanish regions using PCV13 vs regions using PPV23 vaccine was also analyzed for 2017-2019. The overall reductions of IPD cases by PCV13 serotypes in children and adults were 88% and 59% respectively during 2009-2019 with a constant increase of serotype 8 in adults since 2015. IPD cases by additional serotypes covered by PPV23 increased from 20% in 2009 to 52% in 2019. In children, serotype 24F was the most frequent in 2019 whereas in adults, serotypes 3 and 8 accounted for 36% of IPD cases. Introduction of PCV13 or PPV23 in the adult calendar of certain Spanish regions reduced up to 25% and 11% respectively the IPD cases by PCV13 serotypes, showing a decrease of serotype 3 when PCV13 was used. Use of PCV13 in children has shown a clear impact in pneumococcal epidemiology reducing the burden of IPD in children but also in adults by herd protection although the increase of serotype 8 in adults is worrisome. Vaccination with PCV13 in immunocompetent adults seems to control IPD cases by PCV13 serotypes including serotype 3.This work was supported by Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO) [grant SAF2017-83388] and internal funding fromS

    Get PDF
Background: Literature shows that not only are traffic injuries due to accidents, but that there is also a correlation between different chronic conditions, the consumption of certain types of drugs, the intake of psychoactive substances and the self perception of risk (Health Belief Model) and the impact/incidence of traffic accidents. There are few studies on these aspects in primary health care. The objectives of our study are: Main aim: To outline the distribution of risk factors associated with Road Traffic Injuries (RTI) in a driving population assigned to a group of primary health care centres in Barcelona province. Secondly, we aim to study the distribution of diverse risk factors related to the possibility of suffering an RTI according to age, sex and population groups, to assess the relationship between these same risk factors and self risk perception for suffering an RTI, and to outline the association between the number of risk factors and the history of reported collisions. Methods/Design: Design: Cross-sectional, multicentre study. Setting: 25 urban health care centres. Study population: Randomly selected sample of Spanish/Catalan speakers age 16 or above with a medical register in any of the 25 participating primary health care centres. N = 1540. Unit of study: Basic unit of care, consisting of a general practitioner and a nurse, both of whom caring for the same population (1,500 to 2,000 people per unit). Instruments of measurement: Data collection will be performed using a survey carried out by health professionals, who will use the clinical registers and the information reported by the patient during the visit to collect the baseline data: illnesses, medication intake, alcohol and psychoactive consumption, and self perception of risk. Discussion: We expect to obtain a risk profile of the subjects in relation to RTI in the primary health care field, and to create a group for a prospective follow-up. Trial Registration: Clinical Trials.gov Identifier: NCT00778440. </p

An Ultrahigh CO2-Loaded Silicalite-1 Zeolite: Structural Stability and Physical Properties at High Pressures and Temperatures

[EN] We report the formation of an ultrahigh CO2-loaded pure-SiO2, silicalite-1 structure at high pressure (0.7 GPa) from the interaction of empty zeolite and fluid CO, medium. The CO2-filled structure was characterized in situ by means of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Rietveld refinements and Fourier recycling allowed the location of 16 guest carbon dioxide molecules per unit cell within the straight and sinusoidal channels of the porous framework to be analyzed. The complete filling of pores by CO, molecules favors structural stability under compression, avoiding pressure-induced amorphization below 20 GPa, and significantly reduces the compressibility of the system compared to that of the parental empty one. The structure of CO2-loaded silicalite-1 was also monitored at high pressures and temperatures, and its thermal expansivity was estimated. The authors thank the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO), the Spanish Research Agency (AEI), and the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER) for their financial support (MAT2016-75586-C4-1-P, MAT2016-75586-C4-3-P, MAT2015-71842-P; Severo Ochoa SEV-2012-0267; and MAT2015-71070-REDC (MALTA Consolider)). Evaluating the participation of junior members and patient and healthcare professionals representatives in EULAR task forces:Results from an international survey

    Get PDF
Objective European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) task forces (TF) requires participation of ≥2 junior members, a health professional in rheumatology (HPR) and two patient research partners for the development of recommendations or points to consider. In this study, participation of these junior and representative members was compared with the one of traditional TF members (convenor, methodologist, fellow and expert TF members). Methods An online survey was developed and emailed to previous EULAR TF members. The survey comprised multiple-choice, open-ended and 0-100 rating scale (fully disagree to fully agree) questions. Results In total, 77 responded, 48 (62%) women. In total, 46 (60%) had participated as a junior or representative TF member. Most junior/representative members reported they felt unprepared for their first TF (10/14, 71%). Compared with traditional members, junior/representative members expressed a significantly higher level of uncertainty about their roles within the TF (median score 23 (IQR 7.0-52.0) vs 7 (IQR 0.0-21.0)), and junior/representative members felt less engaged by the convenor (54% vs 71%). Primary factors that facilitated interaction within a TF were experience, expertise and preparation (54%), a supportive atmosphere (42%) and a clear role (12%). Conclusion Juniors, patients and HPR experience various challenges when participating in a EULAR TF. These challenges differ from and are generally less pronounced than those experienced by traditional TF members. The convenor should introduce the participants to the tasks, emphasise the value of their contributions and how to prepare accordingly for the TF meeting.</p
