    The Australasian Resuscitation In Sepsis Evaluation : fluids or vasopressors in emergency department sepsis (ARISE FLUIDS), a multi-centre observational study describing current practice in Australia and New Zealand

    Objectives: To describe haemodynamic resuscitation practices in ED patients with suspected sepsis and hypotension. Methods: This was a prospective, multicentre, observational study conducted in 70 hospitals in Australia and New Zealand between September 2018 and January 2019. Consecutive adults presenting to the ED during a 30-day period at each site, with suspected sepsis and hypotension (systolic blood pressure <100 mmHg) despite at least 1000 mL fluid resuscitation, were eligible. Data included baseline demographics, clinical and laboratory variables and intravenous fluid volume administered, vasopressor administration at baseline and 6- and 24-h post-enrolment, time to antimicrobial administration, intensive care admission, organ support and in-hospital mortality. Results: A total of 4477 patients were screened and 591 were included with a mean (standard deviation) age of 62 (19) years, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score 15.2 (6.6) and a median (interquartile range) systolic blood pressure of 94 mmHg (87–100). Median time to first intravenous antimicrobials was 77 min (42–148). A vasopressor infusion was commenced within 24 h in 177 (30.2%) patients, with noradrenaline the most frequently used (n = 138, 78%). A median of 2000 mL (1500–3000) of intravenous fluids was administered prior to commencing vasopressors. The total volume of fluid administered from pre-enrolment to 24 h was 4200 mL (3000–5661), with a range from 1000 to 12 200 mL. Two hundred and eighteen patients (37.1%) were admitted to an intensive care unit. Overall in-hospital mortality was 6.2% (95% confidence interval 4.4–8.5%). Conclusion: Current resuscitation practice in patients with sepsis and hypotension varies widely and occupies the spectrum between a restricted volume/earlier vasopressor and liberal fluid/later vasopressor strategy

    Worker motivation large extent determine productivity and efficiency human resource use in an organization. This paper presents a statistically validated exploratory and empirical study, based on instruments made from experiences that seek to determine the influence of motivation on labor productivity in fruit packing plant (plums and nectarines) in the area central Chile. Three approaches from the side of the content theories of motivation Maslow, Herzberg and Alderfer are compared to establish which of these theories best explain the motivation of agricultural workers in the process of fruit packing respect to labor productivity. Motivation factors were characterized successfully by a factor analysis model; the "working conditions" was the motivation factor negatively affecting labor productivity. This factor includes the criticism or orders received from the fruit packing plant manager, availability and cleanliness of the bathroom, fresh water availability for drinking and protection elements. It was also found that empirically identified motivational factors are explained by content theories of motivation, both Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory as Alderfer's ERG (existence relatedness and growth) theory

    Effects of the marine microalgae Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloropsis oculata in diabetic rats

    Microalgae contain biologically active compounds with potential applications in functional foods and nutraceuticals. The effects of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloropsis oculata on glucose, body weight, lipids, lipoproteins, nitrogen compounds and intestine histopathology in a diabetic rat model were evaluated. A preliminary lethal dose test indicated no acute toxicity from the microalgae at the tested doses. In the randomized biological model, the microalgae produced weight loss. The I. galbana diabetic group exhibited decreased glucose, triacylglycerol and cholesterol values, as well as higher lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts and only minor signs of intestinal inflammation. The N. oculata diabetic group exhibited no changes in clinical values, a lower LAB counts and intestinal damage. Both microalgae increased low density lipoproteins and decreased high density lipoproteins in healthy and diabetic rats. Further research will be needed to evaluate the possible uses of these marine microalgae. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd

    Characterization of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) for photovoltaic applications

    Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) is a promising candidate for solar-cell applications, because it is easily synthesized and is non-toxic to the environment. Recently, phthalocyanine (Pc) was considered by many researchers as the active part in all-organic solar cells, i.e. plastic solar cells. It is a self-assembling liquid crystal developed from a common deep-blue-green pigment. It exhibits a characteristic structural self-organization, which is reflected in an efficient energy migration in the form of extinction transport. In this paper we have report structural, surface morphological, optical and thermal properties of flash-evaporated zinc phthalocyanine thin films. The samples were prepared by using a vacuum coating unit on well-cleaned glass substrates under a pressure of 7×10-6 Torr. A constant rate of evaporation (1 Å/s) was maintained throughout the evaporation of the ZnPc thin films. A rotary drive was employed to obtain uniform thickness during the evaporation. Thicknesses of the films were monitored by a quartz-crystal thickness monitor and were cross verified by the multiple-beam interferometry technique. The X-ray-diffraction pattern reveals the crystalline nature of the films deposited at higher substrate temperatures. Scanning electron microscope and scanning probe microscope nanoscope studies were carried out to determine the surface uniformity and homogeneity of the films for interfacing and application purposes. All the films were found to possess small crystallites less than 100 nm in size. The optical transmittance measurements were carried out using a spectrophotometer in the visible region (400–800 nm) and the films were found to be absorbing in nature. The band gap of the ZnPc thin films is 1.97 eV and the optical transition was found to be direct and allowed. The absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient and refractive index of the ZnPc films were evaluated and the results are discussed. Differential scanning calorimetry studies of ZnPc films were carried out and a phase transition from α to β was observed at 538 K
