Creative tourism as boosting tool for placemaking strategies in peripheral areas: insights from Portugal

    Get PDF
Creative tourism is starting in Portugal as a labelled and structured alternative aiming to produce a boosting effect in peripheral areas. By linking places, host communities and tourists in the cocreation of differentiated experiences, this tourism offer challenges destinations and communities to be creative and reinvent themselves as placemaking agents in the coproduction of territorial amenities. As such, creative tourism can be a useful tool to complement placemaking strategies in peripheral areas, once it has the ability to engage local communities and generate territorial benefits. This hypothesis is explored through a case study and preliminary findings, obtained through focus group, in-depth interviews and content analysis, show the advantages of planned placemaking strategies for the territorial promotion. The comparisons in terms of intervention focus by types of entities and placemaking strategies confirm the complexity of these dynamics, pointing relevant factors used to mobilize local tangible and intangible resources.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

CULTURE.IMPACTS.DIY: A self-assessment toolkit unveiling the multidimensionality of value creation in cultural activities

    Get PDF
The question of value and its measurability has always been central in the study of social and economic practices, including cultural activities. However, contemporary structural changes related to the emergence of cognitive-cultural capitalism bring new forms of cultural production, consumption and mediation that challenge the analysis of cultural activities’ value(s). Despite the recognition of multidimensionality of its value, impacts of cultural activities are still often underestimated, and evaluation exercises have difficulties in including the diversity of dimensions of value created by these activities, in economic, social, cultural, environmental or participatory terms. Combining work developed by a DINAMIA’CET iscte team in different research projects (CREATOUR, RESHAPE, IMPACTS-AR, ARTSBANK and STRONGER PERIPHERIES), this presentation addresses value creation processes in culture, based on work developed with artists, cultural promoters, creative tourism agents and public authorities, in recent years, in several territorial contexts, both Portuguese and European, assessing the impact of their activities in their communities. A new conceptual and analytical approach to assess the impact of cultural activities in a given territory is proposed. A multidimensional impact assessment method, (co)developed with actors in creative fields, is proposed, provided through a toolkit for (self)evaluation of value(s) generated by cultural institutions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An impact self-assessment tool for creative tourism with insights from its application to the CREATOUR ® project

    Get PDF
Considering the small scale of creative tourism, the limited resources in any specific case, and the high engagement level of stakeholders, a self-assessment exercise (i.e. carried out by the organizers/promoters of creative tourism activities) is most appropriate in order to monitor activities and results. Thus, within the CREATOUR ® project, a self-assessment process for creative tourism initiatives was developed, beginning with an initial diagnosis and proceeding to an assessment of outcomes and impacts. The process and tools were co-developed between researchers and practitioners to help various types of creative tourism organizers to measure, monitor, and evaluate the course of their activities in order to improve management and decisionmaking processes. The main objective was to assist practitioners and stakeholder organizations to become more aware of the intentional and unintentional effects generated by creative tourism activities, highlighting the potential benefits of artistic, cultural, and creative experiences for territorial development. This article is divided into three parts: part I outlines the development of the self-assessment process and tools; part II presents a synthesis of overall findings from the CREATOUR ® project resulting from this self-assessment process; and part III lists take-aways for practitioners.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Going against mass tourism: Creative tourism as an alternative, creatour as an example

    Get PDF
In recent years, tourism statistics in Portugal have been showing a growth that is already beginning to cause some concern in the two major cities - Lisbon and Porto - while the rest of the country still expects to grow and benefit from this wave of tourist attractiveness that have been projecting the country in several international rankings. However, there is the notion that this growth should be done with some caution and in an adjusted manner, regarding the different territorial realities and in order to value the tangible and intangible assets that constitute tourism resources. For peripheral territories, such as rural areas or small sized cities, investing on creative tourism as a wide process of co-creation and exchange of cultural and symbolic experiences can be a good opportunity, not only to retain population and revitalize their cultural and social heritage, but also to enhance creative milieus and foster organic territorial dynamics, reflecting the “sense of place” and the unique characteristics of local communities. This communication will focus on cultural and creative tourism as a more sustainable and adapted alternative for low-density territories, giving the CREATOUR project as an example. This national multidisciplinary research project is being currently developed in the four NUTS II regions of Portugal. Simultaneously, CREATOUR works as an incubator of ideas and actions, aimed at providing the visitor-tourist co-production and knowledge experiences. Alongside with this creative tourism project and its conceptual bases, some of the results already obtained in the four regions of the country will also be presented and explored.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

O pré-sal e os desafios do desenvolvimento competitivo nacional: uma abordagem prospectiva sobre a aglomeração produtiva de petróleo e gás da bacia de campos

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Green extraction techniques as advanced sample preparation approaches in biological, food, and environmental matrices: A review

    Get PDF
Green extraction techniques (GreETs) emerged in the last decade as greener and sustainable alternatives to classical sample preparation procedures aiming to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of analytical methods, simultaneously reducing the deleterious side effects of classical extraction techniques (CETs) for both the operator and the environment. The implementation of improved processes that overcome the main constraints of classical methods in terms of efficiency and ability to minimize or eliminate the use and generation of harmful substances will promote more efficient use of energy and resources in close association with the principles supporting the concept of green chemistry. The current review aims to update the state of the art of some cutting-edge GreETs developed and implemented in recent years focusing on the improvement of the main analytical features, practical aspects, and relevant applications in the biological, food, and environmental fields. Approaches to improve and accelerate the extraction efficiency and to lower solvent consumption, including sorbent-based techniques, such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and fabric-phase sorbent extraction (FPSE), and solvent-based techniques (μQuEChERS; micro quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), in addition to supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and pressurized solvent extraction (PSE), are highlighted. This research was funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) through the CQM Base Fund, UIDB/00674/2020, Programmatic Fund, UIDP/00674/2020, and CEB—Centre of Biological Engineering, and by ARDITI (Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação) through the project M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000005, Centro de Química da Madeira (CQM+; Madeira 14-20 Program). Analytical characterization of the aroma of Tinta Negra Mole red wine: Identification of the main odorants compounds

    Get PDF
A method for the simultaneous determination of major and minor volatiles composition in different types (dry, medium dry, sweet and medium sweet) of a young Tinta Negra Mole (TNM) monovarietal red wine from 2003 harvest has been validated. Wine samples preparation includes a dichloromethane liquid–liquid extraction followed by concentration under a nitrogen atmosphere. The extracted fraction was analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and give quantitative information for more than 86 analytes whose concentration range from few μg l−1 to 259.1 mg l−1. The method enables high recovery of volatile compounds in wine good linearity with (r2) values higher than 0.980 and good sensitivity. The limits of detection range from 0.003 to 0.534 mg l−1 and limits of quantification from 0.009 to 1.170 mg l−1. The method allows satisfactory determination of more than 80 compounds in the TNM red wines. These wines are characterized by a high content of higher alcohols, ethyl esters, fatty acids and lactones. The levels of sulphur compounds in Tinta Negra Mole medium sweet wines are very low, but they have the highest concentration of carbonyl compounds. Quantitative analysis of the main odorants followed by the determination of aroma index allow us elucidate the aroma of these varieties. On the basis of their odour description and odour threshold, the most powerful odorants of Tinta Negra Mole wines were tentatively established
