Tese de mestrado, Física (Física da Matéria Condensada e Nanomateriais) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2018The phenomenon of synchronization can be found in several biological and non-biological systems, such as, for example, in physical pendulum clocks, metronomes, pacemaker cells, firefly interaction and planet orbits. In this work we present a study concerning the synchronization of two coupled pendulum clocks. We use techniques of Dynamical Systems, in particular, when we study the Andronov model for an oscillator with impulses. We study the cases for a frequency relation of 1 : 1. We analyze the amplitude of the limit cycles of each oscillator and find an asymptotic stable fixed point for the velocity of an isolated clock. In a study of the phase, we construct the functions that map the phase difference between two coupled clocks and analyze its evolution, for a frequency relation of 1 : 1. We do the same study for a frequency relation of 2 : 1, which is a a study made by the first time in this work. We find one stable fixed point and one unstable fixed point, both for frequency relations of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1. We conclude that the system of coupled Andronov clocks tend to synchronize in phase opposition for the case 1 : 1 and in generalized phase opposition for the case 2 : 1. Also, we make a construction by phase approximation for the first order of the linear expansion, for frequency relations of N : 1. We then expand in second order the maps for a frequency relation of 1 : 1. With this approach, the results coincide with the more complicated technique of studying the original model, this technique is more suitable for numerical studies. Under the conditions of our problem, we conjecture that we have a master-slave relation for a frequency relation of N : 1, for N > 1, based on the observations of the maps of the phase difference and on the analysis of the linear expansions. We construct the regions of synchronization in the parameter space – the Arnold tongues – for two coupled Andronov clocks with frequency relations of 1 : 1, 2 : 1 and 3 : 1. We also analyze what effect does the friction have in these synchronization regions, which, in the synchronization of two Andronov clocks, is a new observation. Finally, we study the amplitude again, but now we do not assume the occurrence of phase locking. The orbits of the unperturbed system of coupled clocks can be described in the R2 surface of an invariant torus in phase space. We introduce the a Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser like theory to verify that under a small limited perturbation to the system, the structure of the torus surface remains stable, which is, again, a new approach for the Andronov model

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis research project aims at studying the impact of the use of CSR claims in advertising towards children, by analyzing the impact of different executional cues of an advertisement created for this purpose. We measured the impact on the following independent variables: attitude towards the product and the advertisement, perceived healthiness of the product, package evaluation and purchase intention. An experiment was conducted with 193 children from 10 to 12 years old, controlling the individual variables related to environmental concern and previous social responsible behaviour of the child. Results showed significant correlations between the independent variables analyzed, and a negative impact in attitude towards the product caused by the introduction of two CSR claims in the case of girls. Moreover, the high level of environmental concern and participation of children was confirmed. Based on these results, some lines of actions are suggested

Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceTime is a crucial factor for the outcome of emergencies, especially those that involve human lives. This paper looks at Lisbon’s firefighter’s occurrences and presents a model, based on city characteristics and climacteric data, to predict whether there will be an occurrence at a certain location, according to the weather forecasts. In this study three algorithms were considered, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree and Random Forest, as well as four techniques to balance the data – random over-sampling, SMOTE, random under-sampling and Near Miss –, which were compared to the baseline, the imbalanced data. Measured by the AUC, the best performant model was a random forest with random under-sampling at 0.68. This model was well adjusted across the city and showed that precipitation and size of the subsection are the most relevant features in predicting firefighter’s occurrences. The work presented here has clear implications on the firefighter’s decision-making regarding vehicle allocation, as now they can make an informed decision considering the predicted occurrences

Sexual dysfunctions and sexology: social constructions, personal meanings and medicalization of sexuality

    Get PDF
In contemporary constructions of sexuality, the discourses and practices of medicine and clinical psychology occupy a primary role. They contribute to the origin of new normative approaches to sexuality, focused on the issue of good sexual functioning. However, despite the growing attention that sexuality is receiving, the study of the social construction of sexual dysfunction remains incipient, especially in a national context. Overall, the results of this thesis, which integrates two studies with mixed methodologies, are presented in the form of four scientific publications. The first article aims to contribute to the discussion of how beliefs regarding sexuality and gender affect the categorization of sexual function as either natural or pathological. The second article provides a view of the dynamics of changing sexual behavior, showing a “model of human sexuality” consisting of four types: rigid conservative, attenuated traditional, adaptive progressive, and confluent transformative. The third article seeks to explore how the growing plurality of sexual scripts affects gender order through the meanings created from personal experiences in everyday life, focusing on representations of sexual problems. Finally, the fourth article analyzes how Portuguese sexologists integrate their professional role in the vast multidisciplinary field of sexual health, providing an overview of the emergence of sexology as scientia sexualis in Portugal. Preceding the four articles, there is an introduction that frames sexuality in the light of two fundamental debates: the medicalization of sexuality and growing individualization in contemporary Western societies.

Visiting experiences and behavioural types in cultural audiences: an analysis of two museums in Lisbon

    Get PDF
Audiences of cultural events are subject to diverse kinds of experiences in their exercise, which de termine the structure of their to structure their consumption practices and cultural habits. Mapping and analysing visitors’ experiences and their visiting styles is thus fundamental tocenhance museums’ offer appeal. Drawing on a conceptual framework which identifies four main kinds of experiences in cultural practices - (i) intellectual experience (ii) emotional experience; (iii) social experience; and (iv) recreational experience, the audiences of two museums in the city of Lisbon (Fado Museum and Puppets Museum) are analysed in this paper. Considering a typology of diverse audience categories (permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, other events), a detailed study of the assessment of different experiences is pursued, with the aim to confront and identify relevant discriminant categories such as socio-demographic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, qualifications, professional status, nationality, residence, previous artistic practices) and cultural habits (considering their visits to other cultural facilities and events). Considering the conclusions, some policy-oriented recommendations from this analysis are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A high-throughput analytical strategy based on QuEChERS-dSPE/HPLC–DAD–ESI-MSn to establish the phenolic profile of tropical fruits

Tropical fruits are a rich source of phenolic compounds which are favorable in defending the human body against damage induced by free radicals (e.g., ROS, RNS). In the current work, a high throughput analytical approach based on a simple extraction procedure (QuEChERS-dSPE) combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn ) was used to establish the phenolic profile of tropical fruits. The proposed method showed good linearity (r2 ≥ 0.991), precision (RSD < 8 %), as well as low limits of detection (LOD ≤ 19.7 μg/L) and quantification (LOQ ≤ 65.8 μg/ L). Thirty-four phenolic compounds were identified as belonging to different chemical groups, from which only 6 were common to all tropical fruits. Pitanga showed the highest relative phenolic concentration (99.5 mg/100 g of fruit), with the passion fruit (17.5 mg/100 g of fruit) the lowest. Flavonols were the most predominant chemical group in tropical fruits, representing 77.9, 60.1, and 55.8% of the phenolic composition of pitanga, passion fruit and mango, respectively. The data obtained allow deep and comprehensive insights into the phenolic compo sition of tropical fruits in order to explore its potential bioactive activity. Nevertheless, in vivo assays using fruit extracts will be essential to recognize their potential health-promoting properties.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
