Cyclical Effects of Bank Capital Buffers with Imperfect Credit Markets: international evidence
This paper analyzes the cyclical effects of bank capital buffers using an international sample of 2,361 banks from 92 countries over the 1990-2007 period. We find that capital buffers reduce the bank credit supply but – through what could be “monitoring or signaling effects” – have also an expansionary effect on economic activity by reducing lending and deposit rate spreads. This influence on lending and deposit rate spreads is more pronunced in developing countries and during downturns. The results suggest that capital buffers have a counter-cyclical effect in these countries. Our data do not suggest differences in the cyclical effects of capital buffers between Basel I and Basel II.
Capital requirements and business cycles with credit market imperfections
The business cycle effects of bank capital regulatory regimes are examined in a New Keynesian model with credit market imperfections and a cost channel of monetary policy. Key features of the model are that bank capital increases incentives for banks to monitor borrowers, thereby reducing the probability of default, and excess capital generates benefits in terms of reduced regulatory scrutiny. Basel I and Basel II-type regulatory regimes are defined, and the model is calibrated for a middle-income country. Simulations of supply and demand shocks show that, depending on the elasticity that relates the repayment probability to the capital-loan ratio, a Basel II-type regime may be less procyclical than a Basel I-type regime.Banks&Banking Reform,Debt Markets,Access to Finance,Economic Theory&Research,Emerging Markets
Effective lagrangian for a mass dimension one fermionic field in curved spacetime
In this work we use momentum-space techniques to evaluate the propagator
for a spin mass dimension one spinor field on a curved
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. As a consequence, we built the one-loop
correction to the effective lagrangian in the coincidence limit. Going further
we compute the effective lagrangian in the finite temperature regime. We arrive
at interesting cosmological consequences, as time-dependent cosmological
`constant', fully explaining the functional form of previous cosmological
models.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figure
IT governance maturity patterns in Portuguese healthcare
The pervasive use of technology in organizations to address the increased services complexity
has created a critical dependency on information technology (IT) that calls to a specific focus on
IT Governance (ITG). However, determining the right ITG mechanisms remains a complex
endeavor. This paper uses Design Science Research and proposes an exploratory research by
analyzing ITG case studies to elicit possible ITG mechanisms patterns. Six interviews were
performed in Portuguese healthcare services organizations to assess the ITG practices. Our goal
is to build some theories (ITG mechanisms patterns), which we believe will guide healthcare
services organizations about the advisable ITG mechanisms given their specific context. We also
intend to elicit conclusions regarding the most relevant ITG mechanisms for Portuguese
healthcare services organizations. Additionally, a comparison is made with the financial industry
to identify improvement opportunities. We finish our work with limitations, contribution and

The critical success factors of GDPR implementation - a systematic literature review
Purpose: The digital paradigm people live in today, which drastically increased the consumption of data, is a threat to their privacy. To create a high level of privacy protection for its citizens, the European Union proposed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which introduces obligations for organizations regarding the storing, processing, collecting and disclosing of data. This paper aims to identify the critical success factors of GDPR implementation. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review was conducted by following a strict review protocol, where 32 documents were found relevant to perform the review and to answer to the proposed research questions. Findings: The critical success factors of GDPR implementation were identified, including barriers and enablers. Furthermore, benefits of complying with GDPR were identified. Research limitations/implications: As GDPR is a relatively recent subject, there are still few scientific papers about it. Therefore, the authors were unable to neither identify nor present a robust conclusion regarding specific topics, such as practical outcomes. Originality/value: On the basis of the literature, the identified critical success factors may be useful for organizations as these can be better prepared to achieve compliance by prioritizing the enablers and avoiding the barriers.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

IT governance enablers in relation to IoT implementation: a systematic literature review
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to obtain a list of recommendations addressed by the information technology (IT) governance enablers in relation to IoT implementation. The reason behind this it is the lack of information about these instances which could the organizations to be more effective when implementing IoT. Design/methodology/approach The objectives will be obtained using the methodology - systematic literature review. Findings During the research, a list of recommendations was created on each IT governance enabler in relation to IoT implementation, showing the flaws that exist at the literature level for each enabler. Originality/value The state of art of this research is a creation of a list of recommendations according to IT governance enablers to be applied on an IoT implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Institutional distances and equity-based entry modes: A systematic literature review
The institutional distance between home and host countries influences the benefits and costs of entry into markets where a firm intends to conduct business. Entry mode choice is a function of a firm's strategy to increase its competitiveness, efficiency, and control over resources that are critical to its operations. This systematic literature review aims to explain the influence of institutional distances on equity-based entry modes in international markets. The present study contributes to the literature on international business using institutional theory to address the entry mode, and by analyzing the nature of the constructs used to measure the influence institutional distances have on the choice of entry mode into foreign markets.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
