July 1, 1916: The First Day of the Battle of the Somme, um panorama ilustrado com cerca de sete metros de comprimento, sem falas ou texto. Neste artigo, será discutido como a escolha do primeiro dia da Batalha do Somme como evento representativo da guerra, a perspectiva de apenas um dos lados (o britânico), e a apresentação do exército como “um único organismo” funcionam como argumentação nessa representação imagética da guerra. Também serão feitas considerações sobre o livreto que acompanha o panorama, e onde se encontram as notas de Sacco que funcionam como legendas informativas, junto a um texto do jornalista Adam Hochshild que narra o desenvolvimento dos acontecimentosdo dia

On representation and ethics in Reigen by A. Schnitzler and reinterpretations by Max Ophüls and Fernando Meirelles

Em 1903, Arthur Schnitzler publicou a peça Reigen (port. A ronda), a qual apresentava dez diálogos, cada qual se desenvolvendo antes e depois de uma conquista sexual. A obra pretende apresentar comportamentos típicos de diferentes classes sociais através da forma como se comportavam para chegar ao mesmo objetivo. A ciranda sexual apresentada no texto causou comoção em sua época e foi criticada por sua alegada imoralidade. Em 1950, a peça foi transposta para o cinema em um filme de Max Ophüls. Sua obra buscou ser fiel ao original, mas também concedeu uma certa leveza ao tema, o que parece indicar um alargamento nos padrões morais diante o sexo. Em 2012, Fernando Meirelles filmou uma releitura da peça de Schnitzler: 360. Na atualidade, uma era marcada pela liberação sexual, o filme não mantém a leveza dada por Ophüls, mas, pelo contrário, é pesado e trata de relações interpessoais através do prisma do sentimento de culpa provocado por traições ou desejos sexuais reprimidos. Neste artigo, será discutido como a temática do desejo e dos impulsos sexuais trazida por Schnitzler se transformou com a passagem de mais de um século, e como a questão da ética foi modelada a cada obra e seu tempo.In 1903 Arthur Schnitzler published the play Reigen (La ronde), which presented ten dialogues, each one occurring before and after a sexual conquest. The play intended to present typical behavior of social statuses through the way each figure behaved in achieving the same goal. The sexual inferences in the text caused a commotion and it was criticized as being immoral. In 1950 the play was transposed to the screen in a movie directed by Max Ophüls. This work was basically faithful to the play, but gave a certain lightness to the theme, which would seem to indicate a loosening of moral standards toward sex during that period. In 2012 Fernando Meirelles directed a film inspired by Schnitzler's play: 360. Even though the present day stands out for its sexual liberation, the movie does not show Ophüls' lightness. On the contrary, the film is bleak and depicts interpersonal relationships through the prism of guilt implied by infidelity and repressed sexual desires. In this article we will discuss how the theme of lust and sexual impulses expressed by Schnitzler evolved in its different representations after more than a century, and how the ethical problem was shaped to each work and its moment in history

ENFIM SÓ(S). FIM DO MUNDO COMO IDÍLIO

Com as tensões da Guerra Fria, o fim dos tempos passou a ser percebido como uma realidade próxima, causando um boom de livros pós-apocalípticos. Em algumas obras, a destruição mundial parece ser a única possibilidade de reestruturar positivamente a política e a vida em sociedade; em outras, o espírito de fraternidade é raro. Em vista de um cenário no qual a própria humanidade é responsável pela destruição e o caos, ser o último sobrevivente adquire contornos mais favoráveis. Paz, contato íntimo com a natureza e tempo para consumir artes são algumas das vantagens de ser o último humano. Este artigo discute as representações positivas de um apocalipse futuro em Schwarze Spiegel (Espelhos negros, 1951) de Arno Schmidt e Die Wand (O muro, 1963) de Marlen Haushofer, com o romance Blecaute (1986) de Marcelo Rubens Paiva como contraexemplo

A Primeira Guerra no romance picaresco de Hans Herbert Grimm Schlump

Schlump (1928) narrates the adventures of a soldier during the First World War. Despite its massive divulgation, Schlump had a poor reception at its time. In the year 1933, the work was forbiddenand burned by the Nazis. After decades of oblivion, in 2008, the literary reviewer Volker Weidermann published a book about the Book Burning, which started a process of recuperation of the work, giving it a new chance, as it was published for the second time in the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The reception to Schlump was very positive and showed a clear desire of the critics to compensate for what happened during the Nazi regime. A careful lecture of the book, however, reveals an attitude that tends to being more frivolous than pacifist, and a narrative that is unable to deliver the critical look thatwas promised by its recent positive reviews, as it will be presented in this article.Schlump (1928) relata as aventuras de um soldado durante a Primeira Guerra. Apesar de forte divulgação, Schlump teve uma recepção pobre. Em 1933, a obra foi queimada e proibida pelos nazistas. Após décadas de esquecimento, o crítico literário Volker Weidermann lançou, em 2008, um livro sobre a Queima de Livros que deu início ao processo de recuperação da obra e lhe concedeu e uma nova chance de recepção. Schlump foi relançado por ocasião do centenário da Primeira Guerra, e gozou de uma recepção positiva da crítica – marcada por um evidente desejo de compensação por sua história no Nazismo. Uma leitura mais atenta, contudo, revela uma atitude mais leviana do que pacifista, em uma narrativa que é incapaz de entregar o olhar crítico que suas elogiosas resenhas prometem, como será apresentado neste artigo

Utopia or dystopia? Anxiety and emptiness in Leif Randt's Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty

Em Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty (2011), Leif Randt apresenta um condado que seria a mais perfeita representação de uma utopia consumista: localizado à beira-mar, CobyCounty é um lugar de festas abundantes, consumo e bem-estar. O livro, contudo, é narrado por um jovem atormentado pela possibilidade de uma catástrofe que se aproxima, desde que seu melhor amigo abandonou a cidade, ouvindo os conselhos da mãe que se afiliou a uma religião esotérica. Se a perfeição do funcionamento dessa sociedade se aproxima muito de uma utopia, o temor de uma catástrofe anunciada aproxima a obra de uma distopia. Deve-se notar, no entanto, que, ao contrário de utopias e distopias, a obra não apresenta uma força centralizadora de poder - mesmo que a menção ao consumismo e às propagandas seja frequente. Neste artigo, Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty será apresentado à luz dos estudos da utopia e distopia, enfatizando seus laços com o tempo atual, marcado pela dicotomia entre a sociedade de conforto produzida pelo alto desenvolvimento tecnológico e a necessidade de se evitar os excessos produzidos por essa mesma sociedade em nome de uma possível catástrofe ecológica, anunciada por cientistas e ativistas, mas da qual não se percebe o impacto diretamente.In Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty (2011), Leif Randt presents a county that seems to be a perfect representation of a consumerist utopia: located on the shore, CobyCounty is characterized by abundant parties, consumerism and wellbeing. The book, however, is narrated by a young man tormented by the possibility of a coming catastrophe, since his best friend left town, following his mother's advice - a woman that had joined an esoteric religion. If the perfect functioning of this society is very similar to an utopia, the fear of an announced catastrophe brings the work closer to a dystopia. Other than both genders, the narrative does not present any centralizing kind of power - even if consumerism and advertisement are frequently mentioned. In this article, Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty will be presented in the light of utopia and dystopia studies. Its bonds to the present time will be emphasized, mostly the dichotomy between the comfort society produced by the advanced technological development and the necessity to avoid the excesses that produced by the same society in the name of a possible ecological catastrophe, that has been announced by scientists and activists, but that still does not affect people's life directly

FROM FANTASY TO REALISTIC DEPICTIONS: An overview of dwarfism in cinema

This article presents the main characteristics of the representation of dwarfism in Western audiovisuals. For this purpose, in addition to listing and commenting some of the most relevant films since German Expressionism, basic theoretical texts on disability studies have been employed, such as those by Tobin Siebers, and studies that deal with real experiences of people with dwarfism, like Erin Pritchard's books. The typical characteristics range from aspects of marvelous "dwarfs" that are occur in representations of people with dwarfism, to the presence of people with dwarfism as a composition of circus scenery, cripface - when people with no disability play the role of those with dwarfism - and what I define as "society on a reduced scale", that is, audiovisual narratives with entire communities formed by little people. The research also verifies that advances have begun to take place in the 21st century, but they are still sporadic or very much centered on the figure of a single actor. In conclusion, the survey of these characteristics aims to contribute to a better understanding of such patterns and the avoidance of their pejorative effects.Este trabajo presenta las principales características de la representación del enanismo en el audiovisual occidental. Para hacerlo, además de enumerar y comentar algunas de las películas más relevantes desde el expresionismo alemán, se han utilizado textos de la teoría básica de los estudios de discapacidad, como los de Tobin Siebers, y estudios que abordan experiencias reales de personas con enanismo, como los libros de Erin Pritchard. Las características típicas tratadas van desde aspectos de "enanos" maravillosos que se reproducen de forma recurrente en las representaciones de personas con enanismo, hasta la presencia de personas con enanismo como composición de la escenografía circense, el cripface - cuando personas sin discapacidad interpretan el papel de personas con enanismo - y lo que yo defino como "sociedad a pequeña escala", esto es, narraciones audiovisuales con comunidades enteras formadas por pequeños. La investigación también comprueba que se han empezado a producir avances en el siglo XXI, pero siguen siendo puntuales o muy centrados en la figura de un único actor. Se concluye que el estudio de estas características contribuye a una mejor comprensión de los patrones y a que se puedan evitar sus efectos peyorativos.Este artigo apresenta as principais características da representação do nanismo no audiovisual ocidental. Para tal, além de elencar e comentar alguns dos filmes mais relevantes desde o expressionismo alemão, foi feito uso de textos de teoria básica dos estudos da deficiência, como de Tobin Siebers, e estudos que se ocupam da vivência real de pessoas com nanismo, como os livros de Erin Pritchard. As características típicas abordadas vão desde aspectos de “anões” maravilhosos que se repetem em representações de pessoas com nanismo, à presença de pessoas com nanismo como composição de cenário circense, o cripface – quando pessoas sem deficiência fazem o papel de pessoas com nanismo – e o que eu defino como “sociedade em escala reduzida”, ou seja, narrativas audiovisuais com comunidades inteiras compostas por pessoas pequenas. A pesquisa também verifica que avanços começaram a ocorrer no século XXI, mas eles ainda são pontuais ou centrados na figura de um único ator. Em conclusão, o levantamento dessas características pretende contribui para uma melhor compreensão de padrões e para que se evitem seus efeitos pejorativos

This article aims to demonstrate how the intertwining of questions such as school education, the formation of the autonomous subject and the formation of species in Judith Schalansky’s novel Der Hals der Giraffe (2011) reflects characteristics of the Bildungsroman; it also sheds a light on the social situation of eastern Germany and contemporary discourse about education and progress.O artigo pretende mostrar como o entrelaçamento das questões da formação escolar, formação do sujeito autônomo e formação das espécies apresentado no romance O pescoço da girafa (2011), de Judith Schalansky, reflete o gênero do romance de formação, ao mesmo tempo que ilumina o mapa social da Alemanha Oriental e o discurso contemporâneo sobre educação e progresso

Behavior of Ricinus communis L. plants due to different volumes of containers and substrates

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of castor bean seedlings due to different volumes of containers and substrates. The work was conducted from May to June 2014, in the nursery of the State University of Paraíba, Campus IV, Catolé do Rocha, PB. The experimental design was a completely randomized design, adopting the 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with 6 replicates, with four container volumes: (polyethylene plastic bags with capacity 1000 dm³; polyethylene plastic bags with a capacity of 500 dm³; tubes with a capacity of 300 dm³ and disposable cups with a capacity of 270 dm³) and two types of substrates (S1 = 50% soil + 50% earthworm humus and S2 = 40% soil + 30% earthworm humus + 30% sand). The variables studied were: (LN) leaf number; (ULA) unitary leaf area; (RD) root diameter; (RL) root length; (SB) shoot biomass; (TPB) total plant biomass. All variables had a significant effect on cantainer volumes. Probably the largest container provided larger area of substrate to be explored. Castor bean seedlings of the BRS Gabriela variety respond well to larger container volumes. The substrate V1 (50% soil and 50% humus) influenced the initial growth of BRS Gabriela seedlings. 

Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil: setting the baseline knowledge on the animal diversity in Brazil

The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others
