Narration and Experience: Looking at an Education based on “Poor” Pedagogy – an Analysis based on a Learning-to-Write Situation

With an approach that designates the classroom as its central reference point and a concrete classroom situation as its starting point, this paper attempts to reflect a perspective that may suggest a teaching practice that leads to poor pedagogy. To achieve this, this paper will work on inverting the logic we frequently employ when thinking about education and school. From this perspective, some axes become central: (1) to produce a view about the idea of knowledge and learning, (2) an awareness of a certain notion of “to teach” and finally (3) starting from a focus on the type of childhood that creates a necessity of “infantilizing” pedagogy, or in other words, we must aim towards a “poor” pedagogy. I will address this through a study carried out with children in the initial stages of their education and literacy learning.

Embrapa Technological Information: a bridge between research and society

This paper presents the efforts undertaken by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation regarding Science and Technology information management, through one of its Decentralized Units, Embrapa Technological Information (Scientific and Technological Information Service', SCT). The major aim of SCT is to promote and improve the processes of scientific communication - information that feeds and that results from research activities - and of science and technology dissemination - information that results from research activities and that is directed to the general publi

The relationship between investment and accounting conservatism: a study applied to small and medium-sized Portuguese companies

Conservatism has been present in accounting practice for a long time. Currently, the dichotomy between historical cost and fair value or between the qualitative characteristic of relevance and reliability motivate further research. Thus, in this paper we analyse whether the level of investment affects conditional conservatism in Portuguese small and medium-sized entities over the period from 2014 to 2018. The study was based on the econometric model proposed by Basu (1997), modified by Ball and Shivakumar (2005). The results indicate that these firms in general do not opt for conservative accounting practices. However, firms that report investment activities tend to be more conservative aiming at capturing investors’ confidence. Furthermore, the empirical evidence does not allow us to conclude that extreme levels of investment significantly affect conservatism. This study contributes to the debate on the relevance of conservative accounting practice at the level of investment decisions

A parametric study on a RC frame based on “PUSHOVER” analysis

Three commercial software packages (SAP 2000, SeismoStruck and MIDAS/CIVIL) universally used in the design of civil engineering structures, are applied on a parametric study of pushover analyses of a RC frame of an office building under a few evaluative phases. In order to represent the influence of the masonry infill panels the equivalent tie method is used; for a sensitivity study on the capacity curves, several values for the tie width are considered. The comprehensive parametric study also addresses the influence of other parameters, on the structural behavior and non linear capacity curves of the RC frame, namely: length and location of the plastic hinges forming near the end of the structural elements, and different loading patterns (with uniform, modal and triangular distributions)

    Bacteria and yeast colony PCR

The bacteria Escherichia coli and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are currently the two most important organisms in synthetic biology. E. coli is almost always used for fundamental DNA manipulation, while yeast is the simplest host system for studying eukaryotic gene expression and performing large-scale DNA assembly. Yeast expression studies may also require altering the chromosomal DNA by homologous recombination. All these studies require the verification of the expected DNA sequence, and the fastest method of screening is colony PCR, which is direct PCR of DNA in cells without prior DNA purification. Colony PCR is hampered by the difficulty of releasing DNA into the PCR mix and by the presence of PCR inhibitors. We hereby present one protocol for E. coli and two protocols for S. cerevisiae differing in efficiency and complexity as well as an overview of past and possible future developments of efficient S. cerevisiae colony PCR protocols. This work was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia Portugal (FCT) through Project FatVal PTDC/EAM-AMB/032506/2017 funded by national funds through the FCT I.P. and by the ERDF through the COMPETE2020 – Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalizacão (POCI).
