brazaletes tipo Villena/Estremoz.
[EN] We put forward a long term explanatory model to account
for a series of gold finds all along the Iberian Peninsula
Atlantic seaboard during the Bronze Age and the Bronze
Age-Iron Age transition, a phenomenon of a unique dimension
in the european panorama of the prehistoric gold
production. The case study is three different forms of hoarding:
hoards containing spirals or chains of spirals; hoards
containing torcs of the Sagrajas/Berzocana type; and
hoards with Villena/Estremoz type bracelets.
We analyse some aspects of the production, distribution
and consumption of the stated gold material, mainly those
referring to manufacturing processes and knowledge transmission
phenomena, which has allowed us to characterise
different technological domain systems and to define how
they interact at the time when a third technological domain
appears in scene. Finally we propose a diachronic frame of
relations between the three domain systems.Peer reviewe
Ejemplar dedicado a: Ritos de paso y puntos de paso: la ría de Huelva en el mundo del Bronce Final europeo / coord. por Marisa Ruiz-Gálvez PriegoBy studying gold artefacts from the Atlantic seaboard of the Iberian Peninsula in the light of the of the sociotechnical system elaborated by Pfaffenberger –technology and technique- it is proposed that when metallurgy began to develop and in part of the Bronze Age, the use of technology can only be detected on the Atlantic seaboard. From the Late Bronze Age on this, became diversified in a process of technological differentiation, which resulted in the emergence of two different cultural areas.
These technological spheres are described and characterised by taking the technical variables and thos fo the material culture, a distinction between the goldwork produced using a strictly indigenous technology (Sagrajas/Berzocana type S/B and Villema/Estremoz type V/E) and that produced using Mediterranean technology (imported).
A series of interactions can be established within that same geographic area in the Late Bronze Age, and three processes of reaction mechanisms can be identified: differentiation/co-existence/integration. Through these mechanisms the development of the technologies can be defined in relation to different forms of inter or intra-cultural contacts. Their combination may or may not give rise to a new technology and its transmission depends on whether contact was personal or through having seen the object.
The new technology of the Iberian Peninsula (V/E and Mediterranean technology) and the process of differentiation in the south between Tartessian orientalizing goldwork and colonial Phoenician goldwork produced in the Iberian Peninsula, trace in turn a line which could be compared with other areas of activity which have their own geographical and temporal points of reference.Peer reviewe
Peer reviewe
Goldworking processes and ontologies at the inception of metallurgy in Western Mediterranean
Resumen del trabajo presentado en la 6th Archaeological Conference of Central Germany: Early Gold and Silver, celebrada en Halle (Alemania), del 17 al 19 de octubre de 2013Concerning archaeometallurgy, gold stands as an “easy metal” of not much interest for the technological development
of metallurgy, the underpinnings of western industrial revolution. This panorama is beginning to change.
Gold entails a great amount of social, ideological and technical information on past societies, very different from
what copper or bronze offers. In this lecture I will show how to extract this information with interdisciplinary
methodologies and an adequate theoretical frame.
Early processes of innovation, tradition and appropriation constitute some of the mechanisms of acquiring/
consolidating power in past societies. Metallurgical expertise was an extremely powerful weapon that ended in
the hands of a leader or an elite and technological knowledge and skills were controlled and restricted acting
upon the production and consumption relations, but also upon technological knowledge. For this reason it is
not surprising that expertise in dealing with copper based alloys could differ from expertise in dealing with
gold, as they play different roles in the consumption pattern.
We will try to picture how the technological processes change and were transmitted, adopted and adapted
in the long term over the Western Mediterranean area, specially in the Iberian peninsula where very different
technological domain systems coexist. The Atlantic and the Mediterranean domains developed their own ontologies
concerning gold, and produced objects of beauty. They can help elucidate underlying social and economic
processes by delving into the reasons behind technological decision-making. New recent finds will help to accomplish
this task.Peer reviewe
