Essays on retail operations

The intensified competition that the retail industry faces with the increasing numbers of new players in both the local and global markets has forced retailers to critically examine and redesign their operations and marketing strategies. To remain competitive, many retailers have focused on the provision of enhanced customer experience and pursued practices of differentiation. In this dissertation comprising of three essays, we attempt to shed light on retail practices that enhance consumer valuation, on factors that affect store performance, and on temporal management of demand enhancing activities using both analytical and empirical methodologies. The aim of this research is to develop theoretical insights to help retailers understand their store performance and effectively manage strategies geared towards enhancing demand and consumer valuation about their product offerings. In the first essay, we focus on technology investments that can affect consumer valuation. We examine the impact of such investments in a duopoly setting in which retailers compete in prices and consumers can search among the two retailers. In the second essay, we focus on store performance and examine the impact of labor and traffic characteristics on different store performance metrics using proprietary data of a retail chain. In the third essay, we focus on general services that retailers could provide to enhance demand and examine their temporal management under competition and demand uncertainty

Aluminum(III) Porphyrins as Ionophores for Fluoride Selective Polymeric Membrane Electrodes

Aluminum(III) porphyrins are examined as potential fluoride selective ionophores in polymeric membrane type ion-selective electrodes. Membranes formulated with Al(III) tetraphenyl (TPP) or octaethyl (OEP) porphyrins are shown to exhibit enhanced potentiometric selectivity for fluoride over more lipophilic anions, including perchlorate and thiocyanate. However, such membrane electrodes display undesirable super-Nernstian behavior, with concomitant slow response and recovery times. By employing a sterically hindered Al(III) picket fence porphyrin (PFP) complex as the membrane active species, fully reversible and Nernstian response toward fluoride is achieved. This finding suggests that the super-Nernstian behavior observed with the nonpicket fence metalloporphyrins is due to the formation of aggregate porphyrin species (likely dimers) within the membrane phase. The steric hindrance of the PFP ligand structure eliminates such chemistry, thus leading to theoretical response slopes toward fluoride. Addition of lipophilic anionic sites into the organic membranes enhances response and selectivity, indicating that the Al(III) porphyrin ionophores function as charged carrier type ionophores. Optimized membranes formulated with Al(III)-PFP in an o -nitrophenyloctyl ether plasticized PVC film exhibit fast response to fluoride down to 40 14ΜM, with very high selectivity over SCN − , ClO 4 − , Cl − , Br − and NO 3 − ( k pot <10 −3 for all anions tested). With further refinements in the membrane chemistry, it is anticipated that Al(III) porphyrin-based membrane electrodes can exhibit potentiometric fluoride response and selectivity that approaches that of the classical solid-state LaF 3 crystal-based fluoride sensor.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50662/1/551_ftp.pd

Film Adaptation as Translation: An Analysis of Adaptation Shifts in Silver Linings Playbook

The purpose of this paper is to approach film adaptation as a modality of translation and to provide a systematic analysis of the changes occurring in the adaptation of a novel for the big screen. These changes, i.e. adaptation shifts, are examined by means of a model that consists of a descriptive/comparative component and an interpretive component. The model is derived from combining insights from adaptation and translation studies and thus builds on the interdisciplinary nature of adaptation studies so as to offer a comprehensive methodological tool for the analysis of adaptations. As processes and products, adaptation and translation involve an act of communication between a source and a target text within a new sociocultural context. In this light, adaptation can be examined as a case of intersemiotic translation in that it involves the transfer of meaning between two different media; in the case of film adaptation, more specifically, meaning is transferred from book to film and the dynamics between the source novel and adaptation is juxtaposed with that between a source text and its translation. The adaptation model is applied to the film adaptation Silver Linings Playbook with an aim to understand the aspects in which the adaptation differs from the source novel and the rationale behind the adaptation shifts. Finally, it is argued that such an analysis from a descriptive as well as an interpretive perspective can lead to a more holistic understanding of adaptation as a cultural phenomenon in the contemporary creative industries

Film Adaptation as an Act of Communication: Adopting a Translation-oriented Approach to the Analysis of Adaptation Shifts

Contemporary theoretical trends in Adaptation Studies and Translation Studies (Aragay 2005; Catrysse 2014; Milton 2009; Venuti 2007) envisage synergies between the two areas that can contribute to the sociocultural and artistic value of adaptations. This suggests the application of theoretical insights derived from Translation Studies to the adaptation of novels for the screen (i.e., film adaptations). It is argued that the process of transposing a novel into a filmic product entails an act of bidirectional communication between the book, the novel and the involved contexts of production and reception. Particular emphasis is placed on the role that context plays in this communication. Context here is taken to include paratextual material pertinent to the adapted text and to the film. Such paratext may lead to fruitful analyses of adaptations and, thus, surpass the myopic criterion of fidelity which has traditionally dominated Adaptation Studies. The analysis uses examples of adaptation shifts (i.e., changes between the source novel and the film adaptation) from the film P.S. I Love You (LaGravenese 2007), which are examined against interviews of the author, the director and the cast, the film trailer and one film review
