    Development of the ARIES parachute system

    The design and testing of a two-stage parachute system to recover a space telescope weighing up to 2000 pounds is described. The system consists of a 15-ft dia ribbon parachute reefed to 50% for 10 seconds and a 73-ft dia paraform or cross second stage reefed to 10% for 10 seconds. The results of eight drop tests and one operational rocket launched flight and recovery are presented. A successful operational recovery of a 1600-lb NASA space telescope was conducted. The payload was launched by a second stage Minuteman rocket to an altitude of about 300 miles above sea level

    Monotone Instrumental Variables: With an Application to the Returns to Schooling

    Econometric analyses of treatment response commonly use instrumental variable (IV) assumptions to identify treatment effects. Yet the credibility of IV assumptions is often a matter of considerable disagreement. There is therefore good reason to consider weaker but more credible assumptions. To this end, we introduce monotone instrumental variable (MIV) assumptions and the important special case of monotone treatment selection (MTS). We study the identifying power of MIV assumptions alone and combined with the assumption of monotone treatment response (MTR). We present an empirical application using the MTS and MTR assumptions to place upper bounds on the returns to schooling.

    Coulomb-Blockade directional coupler

    A tunable directional coupler based on Coulomb Blockade effect is presented. Two electron waveguides are coupled by a quantum dot to an injector waveguide. Electron confinement is obtained by surface Schottky gates on single GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction. Magneto-electrical measurements down to 350 mK are presented and large transconductance oscillations are reported on both outputs up to 4.2 K. Experimental results are interpreted in terms of Coulomb Blockade effect and the relevance of the present design strategy for the implementation of an electronic multiplexer is underlined.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Applied Physics Letter

    Meta-modeling on detailed geography for accurate prediction of invasive alien species dispersal

    Invasive species are recognized as a significant threat to biodiversity. The mathematical modeling of their spatio-temporal dynamics can provide significant help to environmental managers in devising suitable control strategies. Several mathematical approaches have been proposed in recent decades to efficiently model the dispersal of invasive species. Relying on the assumption that the dispersal of an individual is random, but the density of individuals at the scale of the population can be considered smooth, reaction-diffusion models are a good trade-off between model complexity and flexibility for use in different situations. In this paper we present a continuous reaction-diffusion model coupled with arbitrary Polynomial Chaos (aPC) to assess the impact of uncertainties in the model parameters. We show how the finite elements framework is well-suited to handle important landscape heterogeneities as elevation and the complex geometries associated with the boundaries of an actual geographical region. We demonstrate the main capabilities of the proposed coupled model by assessing the uncertainties in the invasion of an alien species invading the Basque Country region in Northern Spain
