Within a field trial at the Bernburg site (Saxony-Anhalt) it was examined how cultivation systems (a1 integrated, a2 and a3 organic) in two nutrient levels influence the diversity (Shannon index) and total number of weed individuals and poppy. On base of management and yield data furthermore the energy gain was determined. There were indications that this parameter influences weed coverage and thermodynamic dependencies also becomes clear in agri - ecosystems

    Cerebral microinfarcts: the invisible lesions

The association between small but still visible lacunar infarcts and cognitive decline has been established by multiple population-based radiological and pathological studies. Microscopic examination of brain sections reveals even smaller but substantially more numerous microinfarcts, the focus of the current review. These lesions often result from small vessel pathologies such as arteriolosclerosis or cerebral amyloid angiopathy. They typically go undetected in clinical-radiological correlation studies that rely on conventional structural MRI, though the largest acute microinfarcts may be detectable by diffusion-weighted imaging. Given their high numbers and widespread distribution, microinfarcts may directly disrupt important cognitive networks and thus account for some of the neurologic dysfunction seen in association with lesions visible on conventional MRI such as lacunar infarcts and white matter hyperintensities. Standardized neuropathological assessment criteria and development of non-invasive means of detection during life would be major steps towards understanding the causes and consequences of the otherwise macroscopically invisible microinfarct

Lead activates protein kinase C in immature rat brain microvessels

We investigated the effects of inorganic lead upon calcium-, phospholipid-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase C) in brain microvessels isolated from 6-day-old rat pups. We found that (a) in broken cell preparations, lead at micromolar concentrations activates this enzyme to an extent equivalent to that of micromolar calcium (10.3 +/- 1.3 and 9.2 +/- 1.6 pmol/mg/min, respectively) and (b) preincubation ofintact microvessels with lead results in a translocation of protein kinase C from the soluble to the particulate fraction. The cytosolic kinase activity stimulated by lead has the same requirements for diacylglycerol and phospholipid as the calcium-stimulated enzyme, suggesting that lead activates the kinase by mimicking calcium. The hypothesis that lead affects protein kinase C activity through a mechanism similar to that of calcium is supported by the similar time courses of substrate phosphorylation and dephosphorylation mediated by lead and calcium. When intact microvessels are preincubated with micromolar concentrations of lead, the translocation of protein kinase C occurs in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The relocalization is virtually complete at 0.1 [mu] lead and by 30 min of exposure. We propose that the sensitivity of protein kinase C to lead, described here in immature brain microvessels, makes this regulatory enzyme a potential mediator of lead toxicity.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/27099/1/0000091.pd
