Pure nuclear quadrupole resonance determination of the electric field gradient asymmetry for broad lines (and application to YBa2Cu3O7)

We present an angle dependent nuclear quadrupole resonance (ADNQR) method to determine the electric field gradient asymmetry parameter eta in systems where the resonance line is so broad that the radio frequency field can excite only a portion of the nuclear spins. In this situation the recently developed spectroscopic methods are not applicable. ADNQR is useful for single crystals and oriented powders, and, for small eta determines eta^4. Therefore, it can be used to evaluate fluctuations in eta due to inhomogeneities. We demonstrate the application of ADNQR experimentally to oriented superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 powder.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Radiobiological Aspects of Supralinear Photographic Emulsions

Abstract Nuclear emulsions of the Ilford K series, exposed to X-rays from 15 to 150 kVp and systematically underdeveloped, exhibit supralinear blackness-exposure curves ranging from 1- to 4-hit in character, and whose shape is the same at all excitation voltages. Processing can be so adjusted that the curve shape is well represented by the model, and matches an experimental dose-response curve obtained with hamster cells after irradiation with gamma rays. The effective grain size of these emulsions is 1.3 μm when normalized to unit density material for comparison with the radiation-sensitive elements of biological cells. With fractionated exposures, response curves which mimic Elkind recovery are produced. The report presents summaries of three data sets taken at and in the vicinity of the oceanographic moorings deployed in the 1978 Joint Air-Sea Inte raction Project (JASIN). The data sets are: (1) the temperature, pressure and vertical motion records from the freely drifting Vertical Current Meters (VCMs) deployed from the ATLANTIS II, (2) the temperature data from the Aanderaa thermistor chains on W.H.O.I. mooring 653, designated as JASIN mooring W3, and (3) the expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data collected from the ATLANTIS II while participating in the JASIN Project.Prepared for the Office of Naval Research under Contract N00014-76-C-0197; NR 083- 400 and for the National Science Foundation under Grant OCE 77-25803

In this paper, the authors describe a teacher preparation program in the area of moderate to severe disabilities with an emphasis in academic instruction. They present a rationale for their increased focus on academics, a description of the program’s design, and several challenges associated with its implementation. Further, they offer several considerations for iterative improvement of the program

Measurement of Gas Exchange, Stream Metabolism, and Carbon Fluxes of Headwater Streams

Freshwater systems are an important component of the global carbon cycle as they outgas disproportionately large quantities of carbon compared to the terrestrial landscape. Of particular importance are headwater streams, which represent roughly 90% of the channel network by length and have been conservatively estimated to outgas roughly 36% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is evaded from rivers and streams globally. We investigated carbon fluxes of a second order headwater stream that drains a 96 ha forested watershed in western Oregon, USA. Total inorganic carbon imports and exports were estimated to be 1294 kg C yr-1 (130 kg C ha-1yr-1). Influx from hillslope runoff and groundwater was measured to be 65.6 kg C ha-1yr-1, 50% of total imports. The remaining imports were split between stream metabolism at 26% (33.8 kg C ha-1yr-1) and near stream riparian sources at 23% (29.9 kg C ha-1yr-1). Exports of inorganic carbon as CO2 from the stream to the atmosphere were estimated to be 59% (76.9 kg C ha-1yr-1) of total exports. Streamflow exported the remaining 41% (53.1 kg C ha-1yr-1) of basin-scaled flux. Results highlight the importance of both external and internal carbon sources to the stream carbon budget. Aeration rate is an integral parameter for the measurement of CO2 evasion. It is also needed to measure instream metabolic processing. Common field methods to estimate the aeration rate have strengths and weaknesses, and researchers continue to search for better techniques, particularly for steep streams with high rates of gas exchange and low productivity. We developed the oxygen carbon (OC) method for calculating gas-exchange rates from simultaneous measurement of oxygen (O2) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Gas-exchange rates are calculated by solving the combined stream transport equation for O2 and DIC. The output is a time series of aeration rates at the same sampling frequency as the input O2 and carbon (C) data. Field tests in a fourth order montane stream in Oregon, USA, were a success. The OC method estimated the aeration rate to 3.25 h-1, which agreed well with the value from direct gas injection of 3.22 h-1. Sensitivity analysis indicated that application of the OC method is limited to reaches with a suitable change in combined O2 and CO2 concentration ≥ ~4 μmol/L and combined O2 and CO2 saturation deficits ≈ 4 μmol/L. The OC method was then applied in a second order headwater stream over a wide range of flow conditions, allowing for development of a site-specific regression between discharge and aeration rate

Opinion Paragraph Writing Intervention for Students with Significant Disability

Increasingly, technology has been used to provide access to academic curricula for students with moderate to severe intellectual disability. In the current pilot study, we used a multiple probe across participants design to evaluate the effectiveness of a technology-based instructional package on the opinion writing skills of three middle school students with moderate and severe intellectual disability. Findings suggest that the intervention resulted in improved performance across all three participants and that all participants maintained performance at levels greater than baseline. Limitations and implications for practice and future research are discussed
