Confinement induced resonances in anharmonic waveguides
We develop the theory of anharmonic confinement-induced resonances (ACIR).
These are caused by anharmonic excitation of the transverse motion of the
center of mass (COM) of two bound atoms in a waveguide. As the transverse
confinement becomes anisotropic, we find that the COM resonant solutions split
for a quasi-1D system, in agreement with recent experiments. This is not found
in harmonic confinement theories. A new resonance appears for repulsive
couplings () for a quasi-2D system, which is also not seen with
harmonic confinement. After inclusion of anharmonic energy corrections within
perturbation theory, we find that these ACIR resonances agree extremely well
with anomalous 1D and 2D confinement induced resonance positions observed in
recent experiments. Multiple even and odd order transverse ACIR resonances are
identified in experimental data, including up to N=4 transverse COM quantum

HoxA9 binds and represses the Cebpa +8 kb enhancer
C/EBPα plays a key role in specifying myeloid lineage development. HoxA9 is expressed in myeloid progenitors, with its level diminishing during myeloid maturation, and HOXA9 is over-expressed in a majority of acute myeloid leukemia cases, including those expressing NUP98-HOXD13. The objective of this study was to determine whether HoxA9 directly represses Cebpa gene expression. We find 4-fold increased HoxA9 and 5-fold reduced Cebpa in marrow common myeloid and LSK progenitors from Vav-NUP98-HOXD13 transgenic mice. Conversely, HoxA9 decreases 5-fold while Cebpa increases during granulocytic differentiation of 32Dcl3 myeloid cells. Activation of exogenous HoxA9-ER in 32Dcl3 cells reduces Cebpa mRNA even in the presence of cycloheximide, suggesting direct repression. Cebpa transcription in murine myeloid cells is regulated by a hematopoietic-specific +37 kb enhancer and by a more widely active +8 kb enhancer. ChIP-Seq analysis of primary myeloid progenitor cells expressing exogenous HoxA9 or HoxA9-ER demonstrates that HoxA9 localizes to both the +8 kb and +37 kb Cebpa enhancers. Gel shift analysis demonstrates HoxA9 binding to three consensus sites in the +8 kb enhancer, but no affinity for the single near-consensus site present in the +37 kb enhancer. Activity of a Cebpa +8 kb enhancer/promoter-luciferase reporter in 32Dcl3 or MOLM14 myeloid cells is increased ~2-fold by mutation of its three HOXA9-binding sites, suggesting that endogenous HoxA9 represses +8 kb Cebpa enhancer activity. In contrast, mutation of five C/EBPα-binding sites in the +8 kb enhancer reduces activity 3-fold. Finally, expression of a +37 kb enhancer/promoter-hCD4 transgene reporter is reduced ~2-fold in marrow common myeloid progenitors when the Vav-NUP98-HOXD13 transgene is introduced. Overall, these data support the conclusion that HoxA9 represses Cebpa expression, at least in part via inhibition of its +8 kb enhancer, potentially allowing normal myeloid progenitors to maintain immaturity and contributing to the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia associated with increased HOXA9
First principles theory of chiral dichroism in electron microscopy applied to 3d ferromagnets
Recently it was demonstrated (Schattschneider et al., Nature 441 (2006),
486), that an analogue of the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)
experiment can be performed with the transmission electron microscope (TEM).
The new phenomenon has been named energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD).
In this work we present a detailed ab initio study of the chiral dichroism in
the Fe, Co and Ni transition elements. We discuss the methods used for the
simulations together with the validity and accuracy of the treatment, which
can, in principle, apply to any given crystalline specimen. The dependence of
the dichroic signal on the sample thickness, accuracy of the detector position

MULTILOCUS INTERACTIONS RESTRICT GENE INTROGRESSION IN INTERSPECIFIC POPULATIONS OF POLYPLOID GOSSYPIUM (COTTON)

The breakdown point in its different variants is one of the central notions
to quantify the global robustness of a procedure. We propose a simple
supplementary variant which is useful in situations where we have no obvious or
only partial equivariance: Extending the Donoho and Huber(1983) Finite Sample
Breakdown Point, we propose the Expected Finite Sample Breakdown Point to
produce less configuration-dependent values while still preserving the finite
sample aspect of the former definition. We apply this notion for joint
estimation of scale and shape (with only scale-equivariance available),
exemplified for generalized Pareto, generalized extreme value, Weibull, and
Gamma distributions. In these settings, we are interested in highly-robust,
easy-to-compute initial estimators; to this end we study Pickands-type and
Location-Dispersion-type estimators and compute their respective breakdown

Robust Estimators in Generalized Pareto Models
This paper deals with optimally-robust parameter estimation in generalized
Pareto distributions (GPDs). These arise naturally in many situations where one
is interested in the behavior of extreme events as motivated by the
Pickands-Balkema-de Haan extreme value theorem (PBHT). The application we have
in mind is calculation of the regulatory capital required by Basel II for a
bank to cover operational risk. In this context the tail behavior of the
underlying distribution is crucial. This is where extreme value theory enters,
suggesting to estimate these high quantiles parameterically using, e.g. GPDs.
Robust statistics in this context offers procedures bounding the influence of
single observations, so provides reliable inference in the presence of moderate
deviations from the distributional model assumptions, respectively from the
mechanisms underlying the PBHT.Comment: 26pages, 6 figure
The Swift capture of a long X-ray burst from XTE J1701-407
XTE J1701-407 is a new transient X-ray source discovered on June 8th, 2008.
More than one month later it showed a rare type of thermonuclear explosion: a
long type I X-ray burst. We report herein the results of our study of the
spectral and flux evolution during this burst, as well as the analysis of the
outburst in which it took place. We find an upper limit on the distance to the
source of 6.1 kpc by considering the maximum luminosity reached by the burst.
We measure a total fluence of 3.5*10^{-6} erg/cm^2 throughout the ~20 minutes
burst duration and a fluence of 2.6*10^{-3} erg/cm^2 during the first two
months of the outburst. We show that the flux decay is best fitted by a power
law (index ~1.6) along the tail of the burst. Finally, we discuss the
implications of the long burst properties, and the presence of a second and
shorter burst detected by Swift ten days later, for the composition of the

Electrical behaviour, characteristics and properties of anodic aluminium oxide films coloured by nickel electrodeposition
Porous anodic films on 1050 aluminium substrate were coloured by AC electrodeposition of nickel. Several experiments were performed at different deposition voltages and nickel concentrations in the electrolyte in order to correlate the applied electrical power to the electrical behaviour, as well as the characteristics and properties of the coatings. The content of nickel inside the coatings reached 1.67 g/m2, depending on the experimental conditions. According to the applied AC voltage in comparison with the threshold voltage Ut, the coating either acted only as a capacitor when U\Ut and, when U[Ut, the behaviour during the anodic and cathodic parts of the power sine wave was different. In particular, due to the semi-conducting characteristics of the barrier layer, additional oxidation of the aluminium substrate occurred during the anodic part of the electrical signal, whilst metal deposition (and solvent reduction) occurred during the cathodic part; these mechanisms correspond to the blocked and pass directions of the barrier layer/electrolyte junction, respectively
Moving Frames and Noether’s Finite Difference Conservation Laws I
We consider the calculation of Euler--Lagrange systems of ordinary difference equations, including the difference Noether's Theorem, in the light of the recently-developed calculus of difference invariants and discrete moving frames. We introduce the difference moving frame, a natural discrete moving frame that is adapted to difference equations by prolongation conditions. For any Lagrangian that is invariant under a Lie group action on the space of dependent variables, we show that the Euler-Lagrange equations can be calculated directly in terms of the invariants of the group action. Furthermore, Noether's conservation laws can be written in terms of a difference moving frame and the invariants. We show that this form of the laws can significantly ease the problem of solving the Euler--Lagrange equations, and we also show how to use a difference frame to integrate Lie group invariant difference equations. In this Part I, we illustrate the theory by applications to Lagrangians invariant under various solvable Lie groups. The theory is also generalized to deal with variational symmetries that do not leave the Lagrangian invariant.
Apart from the study of systems that are inherently discrete, one significant application is to obtain geometric (variational) integrators that have finite difference approximations of the continuous conservation laws embedded \textit{a priori}. This is achieved by taking an invariant finite difference Lagrangian in which the discrete invariants have the correct continuum limit to their smooth counterparts.
