Internet and the ‘Long Tail versus superstar effect’ debate: evidence from the French book market
From a comprehensive database of monthly sales of comic books and literature books in France over the period 2003 to 2007, we show that (i) bestsellers got smaller market shares online than offline, contrary to medium- and low-sellers; (ii) both online and offline sales shift from the head of the distribution to the tail with increasing magnitude over the period; and (iii) the Long Tail appears to be more than just a short-lived phenomenon caused by the specific preferences of early adopters of e-commerce. These three results suggest that online information and distribution tools, whose use increased over the period 2003 to 2007, do have an impact on book distribution and on consumers\u27 purchase decisions
An initial intercomparison of atmospheric and oceanic climatology for the ICE-5G and ICE-4G models of LGM paleotopography
This paper investigates the impact of the new ICE-5G paleotopography dataset for Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) conditions on a coupled model simulation of the thermal and dynamical state of the glacial atmosphere and on both land surface and sea surface conditions. The study is based upon coupled climate simulations performed with the ocean–atmosphere–sea ice model of intermediate-complexity Climate de Bilt-coupled large-scale ice–ocean (ECBilt-Clio) model. Four simulations focusing on the Last Glacial Maximum [21 000 calendar years before present (BP)] have been analyzed: a first simulation (LGM-4G) that employed the original ICE-4G ice sheet topography and albedo, and a second simulation (LGM-5G) that employed the newly constructed ice sheet topography, denoted ICE-5G, and its respective albedo. Intercomparison of the results obtained in these experiments demonstrates that the LGM-5G simulation delivers significantly enhanced cooling over Canada compared to the LGM-4G simulation whereas positive temperature anomalies are simulated over southern North America and the northern Atlantic. Moreover, introduction of the ICE-5G topography is shown to lead to a deceleration of the subtropical westerlies and to the development of an intensified ridge over North America, which has a profound effect upon the hydrological cycle. Additionally, two flat ice sheet experiments were carried out to investigate the impact of the ice sheet albedo on global climate. By comparing these experiments with the full LGM simulations, it becomes evident that the climate anomalies between LGM-5G and LGM-4G are mainly driven by changes of the earth’s topography
Space geodesy constrains ice age terminal deglaciation: The global ICE-6G_C (VM5a) model
A new model of the last deglaciation event of the Late Quaternary ice age is here described and denoted as ICE-6G_C (VM5a). It differs from previously published models in this sequence in that it has been explicitly refined by applying all of the available Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of vertical motion of the crust that may be brought to bear to constrain the thickness of local ice cover as well as the timing of its removal. Additional space geodetic constraints have also been applied to specify the reference frame within which the GPS data are described. The focus of the paper is upon the three main regions of Last Glacial Maximum ice cover, namely, North America, Northwestern Europe/Eurasia, and Antarctica, although Greenland and the British Isles will also be included, if peripherally, in the discussion. In each of the three major regions, the model predictions of the time rate of change of the gravitational field are also compared to that being measured by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellites as an independent means of verifying the improvement of the model achieved by applying the GPS constraints. Several aspects of the global characteristics of this new model are also discussed, including the nature of relative sea level history predictions at far-field locations, in particular the Caribbean island of Barbados, from which especially high-quality records of postglacial sea level change are available but which records were not employed in the development of the model. Although ICE-6G_C (VM5a) is a significant improvement insofar as the most recently available GPS observations are concerned, comparison of model predictions with such far-field relative sea level histories enables us to identify a series of additional improvements that should follow from a further stage of model iteration
Test in a beam of large-area Micromegas chambers for sampling calorimetry
Application of Micromegas for sampling calorimetry puts specific constraints
on the design and performance of this gaseous detector. In particular, uniform
and linear response, low noise and stability against high ionisation density
deposits are prerequisites to achieving good energy resolution. A
Micromegas-based hadronic calorimeter was proposed for an application at a
future linear collider experiment and three technologically advanced prototypes
of 11 m were constructed. Their merits relative to the
above-mentioned criteria are discussed on the basis of measurements performed
at the CERN SPS test-beam facility
La diversité culturelle dans l'industrie du livre en France (2003-2007)
Si la production éditoriale française a beaucoup progressé au cours des années 2000 en termes de titres et d’exemplaires produits annuellement, comment apprécier si ce bond quantitatif s’accompagne ou non d’une plus grande diversité de la consommation ? Fondée sur l’approche tridimensionnelle d’Andrew Stirling, la mesure de la diversité culturelle est analysée sur trois segments éditoriaux (jeunesse, bandes dessinées, littérature) selon trois dimensions : la variété produite et consommée, l’équilibre des ventes entre les différents titres et la disparité des œuvres et des auteurs lus. L’analyse apporte des éléments de réponse à la question de l’efficacité de la loi sur le prix unique en termes de diversité culturelle et sur l’effet de levier des ventes en ligne (hypothèse de la longue traîne)
Scale invariant correlations and the distribution of prime numbers
Negative correlations in the distribution of prime numbers are found to
display a scale invariance. This occurs in conjunction with a nonstationary
behavior. We compare the prime number series to a type of fractional Brownian
motion which incorporates both the scale invariance and the nonstationary
behavior. Interesting discrepancies remain. The scale invariance also appears
to imply the Riemann hypothesis and we study the use of the former as a test of

Internal convection in thermoelectric generator models
Coupling between heat and electrical currents is at the heart of
thermoelectric processes. From a thermal viewpoint this may be seen as an
additional thermal flux linked to the appearance of electrical current in a
given thermoelectric system. Since this additional flux is associated to the
global displacement of charge carriers in the system, it can be qualified as
convective in opposition to the conductive part associated with both phonons
transport and heat transport by electrons under open circuit condition, as,
e.g., in the Wiedemann-Franz relation. In this article we demonstrate that
considering the convective part of the thermal flux allows both new insight
into the thermoelectric energy conversion and the derivation of the maximum
power condition for generators with realistic thermal coupling.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
