Combined production of broilers and fruits
Combined production of broilers and fruit trees is a subject often discussed in organic fruit
production in Denmark. Very little research has been carried out on this type of production
system. In organic production in Denmark, nearly no pesticides are allowed, so the need
for alternative pest control is large. Apple sawfly (Hoplocampa testudinea) and pear midge
(Contarinia pyrivora) cause big crop losses in apples and pears respectively, in unsprayed
organic fruit production. Both insects infest fruitlets and cause these to drop prematurely
after which the pests pupate in the topsoil. In the present experiment a research orchard
with the varieties âDiscoveryâ and âConferenceâ were used as outdoor area for broilers to
minimise the population of sawflies and pear midges, and to reduce the need for weeding
and manuring. The trees were kept unsprayed. Fruit yield and fruit quality were assessed
at harvest. White sticky traps were placed in the test area in order to measure the
occurrence of sawfly over time. The infestation of pear midge was investigated counting
the infested fruitlets in clusters on trees at the centre of the plots. The catch of apple
sawflies was reduced in the combined apple and broiler production, but no significant
effect on the yield or the fruit quality was seen. Experiences from on-farm research show
that combining fruit and egg-production is one way to reduce the problem with apple
sawfly, but poultry alone is not a sufficient way of controlling sawflies. The welfare and
health of the broilers were excellent under fruit trees
A mapping approach to synchronization in the "Zajfman trap": stability conditions and the synchronization mechanism
We present a two particle model to explain the mechanism that stabilizes a
bunch of positively charged ions in an "ion trap resonator" [Pedersen etal,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 055001]. The model decomposes the motion of the two
ions into two mappings for the free motion in different parts of the trap and
one for a compressing momentum kick. The ions' interaction is modelled by a
time delay, which then changes the balance between adjacent momentum kicks.
Through these mappings we identify the microscopic process that is responsible
for synchronization and give the conditions for that regime.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; submitted to Phys Rev
Field efficacy of new compounds to replace copper for scab control in organic apple production
Efficacy of compounds was investigated in field experiments in Denmark and the Netherlands according to EPPO guidelines. Some Yucca extracts and potassium bicarbonate had an efficacy similar to sulphur on leaves. Addition of sulphur to Yucca 1 and to potassium bicarbonate increased the level of efficacy to that of copper. This confirms results from earlier years. Although a dose increase resulted in better efficacy, this was more prominent for Yucca1 than for potassium bicarbonate
A Study of Snippet Length and Informativeness: Behaviour, Performance and User Experience
The design and presentation of a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) has been subject to much research. With many contemporary aspects of the SERP now under scrutiny, work still remains in investigating more traditional SERP components, such as the result summary. Prior studies have examined a variety of different aspects of result summaries, but in this paper we investigate the influence of result summary length on search behaviour, performance and user experience. To this end, we designed and conducted a within-subjects experiment using the TREC AQUAINT news collection with 53 participants. Using Kullback-Leibler distance as a measure of information gain, we examined result summaries of different lengths and selected four conditions where the change in information gain was the greatest: (i) title only; (ii) title plus one snippet; (iii) title plus two snippets; and (iv) title plus four snippets. Findings show that participants broadly preferred longer result summaries, as they were perceived to be more informative. However, their performance in terms of correctly identifying relevant documents was similar across all four conditions. Furthermore, while the participants felt that longer summaries were more informative, empirical observations suggest otherwise; while participants were more likely to click on relevant items given longer summaries, they also were more likely to click on non-relevant items. This shows that longer is not necessarily better, though participants perceived that to be the case - and second, they reveal a positive relationship between the length and informativeness of summaries and their attractiveness (i.e. clickthrough rates). These findings show that there are tensions between perception and performance when designing result summaries that need to be taken into account
Quantification of trypsin with a radioimmunoassay in herring larvae (Clupea harengus) compared with a highly sensitive fluorescence technique to determine tryptic enzyme activity
Enzymatic activity and quantity of the protease trypsin were measured in individual herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.). The enzymatic activity assay was done using a fluorescence technique, and a radioimmunoassay was used for quantification of trypsin. The results are compared and the differences between the techniques discussed. Both methods gave similar results, as high or low values in trypsin quantity were reflected in high or low values of tryptic activity. Quantity and activity were linearly and positively correlated, but small differences between methods were found at the lowest detection limits. Both techniques reflect high variability between individual larvae
Einstein-Weyl structures corresponding to diagonal K\"ahler Bianchi IX metrics
We analyse in a systematic way the four dimensionnal Einstein-Weyl spaces
equipped with a diagonal K\"ahler Bianchi IX metric. In particular, we show
that the subclass of Einstein-Weyl structures with a constant conformal scalar
curvature is the one with a conformally scalar flat - but not necessarily
scalar flat - metric ; we exhibit its 3-parameter distance and Weyl one-form.
This extends previous analysis of Pedersen, Swann and Madsen , limited to the
scalar flat, antiself-dual case. We also check that, in agreement with a
theorem of Derdzinski, the most general conformally Einstein metric in the
family of biaxial K\"ahler Bianchi IX metrics is an extremal metric of Calabi,
conformal to Carter's metric, thanks to Chave and Valent's results.Comment: 15 pages, Latex file, minor modifications, to be published in Class.
