Spitzer and ISO Galaxy Counts in the Mid-Infrared
Galaxy source counts that simultaneously fit the deep mid-infrared surveys at
24 microns and 15 microns made by the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared
Space Observatory (ISO) respectively are presented for two phenomenological
models. The models are based on starburst and luminous infrared galaxy
dominated populations. Both models produce excellent fits to the counts in both
wavebands and provide an explanation for the high redshift population seen in
the longer Spitzer 24 micron band supporting the hypothesis that they are
luminous-ultraluminous infrared galaxies at z=2-3, being the mid-infrared
counterparts to the sub-mm galaxy population. The source counts are
characterized by strong evolution to redshift unity, followed by less drastic
evolution to higher redshift. The number-redshift distributions in both
wavebands are well explained by the effect of the many mid-infrared features
passing through the observation windows. The sharp upturn at around a
milliJansky in the 15 micron counts in particular depends critically on the
distribution of mid-infrared features around 12 microns, in the assumed

Managing financial constraints: Undercapitalization and underwriting capacity in spanish fire insurance
Reinsurance is a vital financial device for enhancing underwriting capacity, ceding risks and mitigating financial distress. By supplying financial resources and services, reinsurance can facilitate growth and expansion in the insurance business. Focusing on the insurance sector in the emerging Spanish economy and using a novel dataset on fire insurance companies, this paper examines the role of fire insurance in the capital formation, the importance of reinsurance as a vehicle for expanding the country’s domestic underwriting capacity, and how the capital import impacted on the balance of
payment, from the introduction of the first comprehensive legislation regarding insurance in 1908 to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Considering the situation of undercapitalization, the singularities of the insurance market, and the changes in regulatory schemes, we find that foreign reinsurance became a key financial vehicle for increasing the underwriting capacity in Spain. We also show the struggle for an emerging market to find ways to keep balance of current accounts and raise capital
when the financial infrastructure is underdeveloped. The diffusion of reinsurance networks from the core of industrial Western countries towards emerging economies was one of the mechanisms for financial modernization on a global scale
Simultaneous UBVRI observations of the cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii: temperature and mass of fireballs
We report simultaneous multicolour observations in 5 bands (UBVRI) of the
flickering variability of the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr. Our aim is to
estimate the parameters (colours, temperature, size) of the fireballs that
produce the optical flares.
The observed rise time of the optical flares is in the interval 220 - 440
sec. We estimate the dereddened colours of the fireballs: (U-B)_0 in the range
0.8-1.4, (B-V)_0 ~ 0.03-0.24, (V-I)_0 ~ 0.26-0.78. We find for the fireballs a
temperature in the range 10000 - 25000 K, mass (7-90).10^{19} g, size
(3-7).10^9 cm (using a distance of d=86 pc). These values refer to the peak of
the flares observed in UBVRI bands.

A null biogeographic test for assessing ecological niche evolution
AIMS: Quantification of the degree to which ecological niches change over evolutionary timescales is important for deepening our understanding of evolutionary and ecological processes.
Phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) is when closely related species differ less ecologically than expected by chance, whereas Phylogenetic Niche Divergence (PND) is when closely related species differ more ecologically than expected by chance. We present a new null model to test for PNC and PND (the RTR significance test), which we combine with a novel metric for quantifying niche overlap
LOCATION: Europe, North America and Madagascar.
METHODS: The RTR null model comprises many thousands of replicates generated by randomly translocating and rotating the set of occurrence records for two populations (e.g.,sister species) while maintaining the spatial configuration between all occurrences within each replicate. For each replicate we calculate niche overlap as the proportion of the combined niche breadth that is shared by the two species, averaged over n environmental dimensions.
This approach enables us to test whether the observed niche overlap is more or less than expected by chance given the environmental conditions present in the study area. We test the performance of our approach in comparison to other methods using both simulated and real case scenarios, including crested newts in Europe, pocket gophers in North America, and lemurs in Madagascar.
RESULTS: We find that our measure of niche overlap performs better than other metrics in an artificial simulation scenario, and we find evidence for both PNC and PND in our case studies for Europe, North America and Madagascar. Our results demonstrate that both the RTR significance test and the novel metric of niche overlap are consistent with evolutionary theory and are suitable methods to test for PNC and PND.
MAIN CONCLUSIONS:
We make available scripts to implement the RTR test and metric of niche overlap, and expect that the methods will prove useful for addressing a broad set of questions relating to ecological niche evolution and speciation, particularly for restricted-range species for which few known occurrence records are available
Reinforcement Learning for Variable Selection in a Branch and Bound Algorithm
Mixed integer linear programs are commonly solved by Branch and Bound
algorithms. A key factor of the efficiency of the most successful commercial
solvers is their fine-tuned heuristics. In this paper, we leverage patterns in
real-world instances to learn from scratch a new branching strategy optimised
for a given problem and compare it with a commercial solver. We propose FMSTS,
a novel Reinforcement Learning approach specifically designed for this task.
The strength of our method lies in the consistency between a local value
function and a global metric of interest. In addition, we provide insights for
adapting known RL techniques to the Branch and Bound setting, and present a new
neural network architecture inspired from the literature. To our knowledge, it
is the first time Reinforcement Learning has been used to fully optimise the
branching strategy. Computational experiments show that our method is
appropriate and able to generalise well to new instances
Improved model identification for non-linear systems using a random subsampling and multifold modelling (RSMM) approach
In non-linear system identification, the available observed data are conventionally partitioned into two parts: the training data that are used for model identification and the test data that are used for model performance testing. This sort of 'hold-out' or 'split-sample' data partitioning method is convenient and the associated model identification procedure is in general easy to implement. The resultant model obtained from such a once-partitioned single training dataset, however, may occasionally lack robustness and generalisation to represent future unseen data, because the performance of the identified model may be highly dependent on how the data partition is made. To overcome the drawback of the hold-out data partitioning method, this study presents a new random subsampling and multifold modelling (RSMM) approach to produce less biased or preferably unbiased models. The basic idea and the associated procedure are as follows. First, generate K training datasets (and also K validation datasets), using a K-fold random subsampling method. Secondly, detect significant model terms and identify a common model structure that fits all the K datasets using a new proposed common model selection approach, called the multiple orthogonal search algorithm. Finally, estimate and refine the model parameters for the identified common-structured model using a multifold parameter estimation method. The proposed method can produce robust models with better generalisation performance
Analysis of five-year trends in self-reported language preference and issues of item non-response among Hispanic persons in a large cross-sectional health survey: implications for the measurement of an ethnic minority population
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Significant differences in health outcomes have been documented among Hispanic persons, the fastest-growing demographic segment of the United States. The objective of this study was to examine trends in population growth and the collection of health data among Hispanic persons, including issues of language preference and survey completion using a national health survey to highlight issues of measurement of an increasingly important demographic segment of the United States.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>Data from the 2003-2007 United States Census and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were used to compare trends in population growth and survey sample size as well as differences in survey response based on language preference among a Hispanic population. Percentages of item non-response on selected survey questions were compared for Hispanic respondents choosing to complete the survey in Spanish and those choosing to complete the survey in English. The mean number of attempts to complete the survey was also compared based on language preference among Hispanic respondents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The sample size of Hispanic persons in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System saw little growth compared to the actual growth of the Hispanic population in the United States. Significant differences in survey item non-response for nine of 15 survey questions were seen based on language preference. Hispanic respondents choosing to complete the survey in Spanish had a significantly fewer number of call attempts for survey completion compared to their Hispanic counterparts choosing to communicate in English.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Including additional measures of acculturation and increasing the sample size of Hispanic persons in a national health survey such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System may result in more precise findings that could be used to better target prevention and health care needs for an ethnic minority population.</p
Are owl pellets good estimators of prey abundance?
Some ecologists have been skeptics about the use of owl pellets to estimate small mammal's fauna. This is due to the assumptions required by this method: (a) that owls hunt at random, and (b) that pellets represent a random sample from the environment. We performed statistical analysis to test these assumptions and to assess the effectiveness of Barn owl pellets as a useful estimator of field abundances of its preys. We used samples collected in the arid Extra-Andean Patagonia along an altitudinal environmental gradient from lower Monte ecoregion to upper Patagonian steppe ecoregion, with a mid-elevation ecotone. To test if owls hunt at random, we estimated expected pellet frequency by creating a distribution of random pellets, which we compared with data using a simulated chi-square. To test if pellets represent a random sample from the environment, differences between ecoregions were evaluated by PERMANOVAs with Bray–Curtis dissimilarities. We did not find evidence that owls foraged non-randomly. Therefore, we can assume that the proportions of the small mammal's species in the diet are representative of the proportions of the species in their communities. Only Monte is different from other ecoregions. The ecotone samples are grouped with those of Patagonian steppes. There are no real differences between localities in the small mammal's abundances in each of these ecoregions and/or Barn owl pellets cannot detect patterns at a smaller spatial scale. Understanding the culture of antimicrobial prescribing in agriculture: a qualitative study of UK pig veterinary surgeons
Objectives The use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals has been linked with the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial populations, with consequences for animal and public health. This study explored the underpinning drivers, motivators and reasoning behind prescribing decisions made by veterinary surgeons working in the UK pig industry. Methods A qualitative interview study was conducted with 21 veterinary surgeons purposively selected from all UK pig veterinary surgeons. Thematic analysis was used to analyse transcripts. Results Ensuring optimum pig health and welfare was described as a driver for antimicrobial use by many veterinary surgeons and was considered a professional and moral obligation. Veterinary surgeons also exhibited a strong sense of social responsibility over the need to ensure that antimicrobial use was responsible. A close relationship between management practices, health and economics was evident, with improvements in management commonly identified as being potential routes to reduce antimicrobial usage; however, these were not always considered economically viable. The relationship with clients was identified as being a source of professional stress for practitioners due to pressure from farmers requesting antimicrobial prescriptions, and concern over poor compliance of antimicrobial administration by some farmers. Conclusions The drivers behind prescribing decisions by veterinary surgeons were complex and diverse. A combination of education, improving communication between veterinary surgeons and farmers, and changes in regulations, in farm management and in consumer/retailer demands may all be needed to ensure that antimicrobial prescribing is optimal and to achieve significant reductions in use
Cariprazine in the acute treatment of unipolar and bipolar depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis
\ua9 2024 The AuthorsBackground: Cariprazine has emerged as a promising augmenting treatment agent for unipolar depression and as a monotherapy option for bipolar depression. We evaluated cariprazine\u27s efficacy in treating acute major depressive episodes in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder. Methods: A systematic review was conducted on MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov and ScanMedicine. Study quality was assessed using the RoB 2 tool. Pairwise and dose-response meta-analyses were conducted with RStudio. Evidence quality was assessed with GRADE. Results: Nine RCTs meeting inclusion criteria encompassed 4889 participants. Cariprazine, compared to placebo, significantly reduced the MADRS score (MD = −1.49, 95 % CI: −2.22 to −0.76) and demonstrated significantly higher response (RR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.12 to 1.30) and remission (RR = 1.19, 95 % CI: 1.06 to 1.34) rates. Subgroup analysis unveiled statistically significant reductions in MADRS score in MDD (MD = −1.15, 95 % CI: −2.04 to −0.26) and bipolar I disorder (BDI) (MD = −2.53, 95 % CI: −3.61 to −1.45), higher response rates for both MDD (RR = 1.19, 95 % CI: 1.08 to 1.31) and BDI (RR = 1.27, 95 % CI: 1.10 to 1.46), and higher remission rates only for BDI (RR = 1.41, 95 % CI: 1.24 to 1.60). A higher rate of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events was observed. Limitations: Reliance solely on RCTs limits generalisability; strict criteria might not reflect real-world diversity. Conclusions: Cariprazine demonstrates efficacy in treating major depressive episodes, although variations exist between MDD and BDI and tolerability may be an issue
