Infrared Imaging of Capella with the IOTA Closure Phase Interferometer
We present infrared aperture synthesis maps produced with the upgraded IOTA
interferometer. Michelson interferograms on the close binary system Capella
(Alpha Aur) were obtained in the H-band between 2002 November 12 and 16 using
the IONIC3 beam combiner. With baselines of 15m < B < 38m, we were able to
determine the relative position of the binary components with milliarcsecond
(mas) precision and to track their movement along the approx. 14 degree arc
covered by our observation run. We briefly describe the algorithms used for
visibility and closure phase estimation. Three different Hybrid Mapping and
Bispectrum Fitting techniques were implemented within one software framework
and used to reconstruct the source brightness distribution. By dividing our
data into subsets, the system could be mapped at three epochs, revealing the
motion of the stars. The precise position of the binary components was also
determined with model fits, which in addition revealed I_Aa/I_Ab=1.49 +/- 0.10
and apparent stellar uniform-disk (UD) diameters of Theta_Aa=8.9 +/- 0.6 mas
and Theta_Ab=5.8 +/- 0.8 mas.
To improve the u, v-plane coverage, we compensated this orbital motion by
applying a rotation-compensating coordinate transformation. The resulting
model-independent map with a beam size of 5.4 x 2.6 mas allows the resolution
of the stellar surfaces of the Capella giants themselves.Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal (2005-03-21

Conservative evaluation of the uncertainty in the LAGEOS-LAGEOS II Lense-Thirring test
We deal with the test of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic
Lense-Thirring effect currently ongoing in the Earth's gravitational field with
the combined nodes \Omega of the laser-ranged geodetic satellites LAGEOS and
LAGEOS II.
One of the most important source of systematic uncertainty on the orbits of
the LAGEOS satellites, with respect to the Lense-Thirring signature, is the
bias due to the even zonal harmonic coefficients J_L of the multipolar
expansion of the Earth's geopotential which account for the departures from
sphericity of the terrestrial gravitational potential induced by the
centrifugal effects of its diurnal rotation. The issue addressed here is: are
the so far published evaluations of such a systematic error reliable and
realistic? The answer is negative. Indeed, if the difference \Delta J_L among
the even zonals estimated in different global solutions (EIGEN-GRACE02S,
EIGEN-CG03C, GGM02S, GGM03S, ITG-Grace02, ITG-Grace03s, JEM01-RL03B, EGM2008,
AIUB-GRACE01S) is assumed for the uncertainties \delta J_L instead of using
their more or less calibrated covariance sigmas \sigma_{J_L}, it turns out that
the systematic error \delta\mu in the Lense-Thirring measurement is about 3 to
4 times larger than in the evaluations so far published based on the use of the
sigmas of one model at a time separately, amounting up to 37% for the pair
EIGEN-GRACE02S/ITG-Grace03s. The comparison among the other recent GRACE-based
models yields bias as large as about 25-30%. The major discrepancies still
occur for J_4, J_6 and J_8, which are just the zonals the combined

Few Skewed Disks Found in First Closure-Phase Survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars
Using the 3-telescope IOTA interferometer on Mt. Hopkins, we report results
from the first near-infrared (lambda=1.65 mu) closure-phase survey of Young
Stellar Objects (YSOs). These closure phases allow us to unambiguously detect
departures from centrosymmetry (i.e., skew) in the emission pattern from YSO
disks on the scale of ~4 milliarcseconds, expected from generic ``flared disk''
models. Six of fourteen targets showed small, yet statistically-significant,
non-zero closure phases, with largest values from the young binary system MWC
361-A and the (pre-main sequence?) Be star HD 45677. Our observations are quite
sensitive to the vertical structure of the inner disk and we confront the
predictions of the ``puffed-up inner wall'' models of Dullemond, Dominik, and
Natta (DDN). Our data support disks models with curved inner rims because the
expected emission appear symmetrically-distributed around the star over a wide
range of inclination angles. In contrast, our results are incompatible with the
models possessing vertical inner walls because they predict extreme skewness
(i.e., large closure phases) from the near-IR disk emission that is not seen in
our data. In addition, we also present the discovery of mysterious H-band
``halos'' (~5-10% of light on scales 0.01-0.50 arcsec) around a few objects, a
preliminary ``parametric imaging'' study for HD 45677, and the first

The second set of pulsar discoveries by CHIME/FRB/Pulsar: 14 Rotating Radio Transients and 7 pulsars
The Canadian Hydrogen Mapping Experiment (CHIME) is a radio telescope located
in British Columbia, Canada. The large field of view (FOV) of 200 square
degrees has enabled the CHIME/FRB instrument to produce the largest FRB catalog
to date. The large FOV also allows CHIME/FRB to be an exceptional pulsar and
Rotating Radio Transient (RRAT) finding machine, despite saving only the
metadata information of incoming Galactic events. We have developed a pipeline
to search for pulsars/RRATs using DBSCAN, a clustering algorithm. Output
clusters are then inspected by a human for pulsar/RRAT candidates and follow-up
observations are scheduled with the more sensitive CHIME/Pulsar instrument. The
CHIME/Pulsar instrument is capable of a near-daily search mode observation
cadence. We have thus developed the CHIME/Pulsar Single Pulse Pipeline to
automate the processing of CHIME/Pulsar search mode data. We report the
discovery of 21 new Galactic sources, with 14 RRATs, 6 regular slow pulsars and
1 binary system. Owing to CHIME/Pulsar's daily observations we have obtained
timing solutions for 8 of the 14 RRATs along with all the regular pulsars. This
demonstrates CHIME/Pulsar's ability at finding timing solutions for transient
sources
Eosinophils Are Important for Protection, Immunoregulation and Pathology during Infection with Nematode Microfilariae
Eosinophil responses typify both allergic and parasitic helminth disease. In helminthic disease, the role of eosinophils can be both protective in immune responses and destructive in pathological responses. To investigate whether eosinophils are involved in both protection and pathology during filarial nematode infection, we explored the role of eosinophils and their granule proteins, eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and major basic protein-1 (MBP-1), during infection with Brugia malayi microfilariae. Using eosinophil-deficient mice (PHIL), we further clarify the role of eosinophils in clearance of microfilariae during primary, but not challenge infection in vivo. Deletion of EPO or MBP-1 alone was insufficient to abrogate parasite clearance suggesting that either these molecules are redundant or eosinophils act indirectly in parasite clearance via augmentation of other protective responses. Absence of eosinophils increased mast cell recruitment, but not other cell types, into the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid during challenge infection. In addition absence of eosinophils or EPO alone, augmented parasite-induced IgE responses, as measured by ELISA, demonstrating that eosinophils are involved in regulation of IgE. Whole body plethysmography indicated that nematode-induced changes in airway physiology were reduced in challenge infection in the absence of eosinophils and also during primary infection in the absence of EPO alone. However lack of eosinophils or MBP-1 actually increased goblet cell mucus production. We did not find any major differences in cytokine responses in the absence of eosinophils, EPO or MBP-1. These results reveal that eosinophils actively participate in regulation of IgE and goblet cell mucus production via granule secretion during nematode-induced pathology and highlight their importance both as effector cells, as damage-inducing cells and as supervisory cells that shape both innate and adaptive immunity
Proposed host galaxies of repeating fast radio burst sources detected by CHIME/FRB
We present a search for host galaxy associations for the third set of
repeating fast radio burst (FRB) sources discovered by the CHIME/FRB
Collaboration. Using the ~1 arcmin CHIME/FRB baseband localizations and
probabilistic methods. We identify potential host galaxies of two FRBs,
20200223B and 20190110C at redshifts of 0.06024(2) and 0.12244(6),
respectively. We also discuss the properties of a third marginal candidate host
galaxy association for FRB 20191106C with a host redshift of 0.10775(1). The
three putative host galaxies are all relatively massive, fall on the standard
mass-metallicity relationship for nearby galaxies, and show evidence of ongoing
star formation. They also all show signatures of being in a transitional
regime, falling in the "green valley" which is between the bulk of star-forming
and quiescent galaxies. The plausible host galaxies identified by our analysis
are consistent with the overall population of repeating and non-repeating FRB
hosts while increasing the fraction of massive and bright galaxies. Coupled
with these previous host associations, we identify a possible excess of FRB
repeaters whose host galaxies have M_u - M_r colors redder than the bulk of
star-forming galaxies. Additional precise localizations are required to confirm

Multiwavelength Constraints on the Origin of a Nearby Repeating Fast Radio Burst Source in a Globular Cluster
Since fast radio bursts (FRBs) were discovered, their precise origins have
remained a mystery. Multiwavelength observations of nearby FRB sources provide
one of the best ways to make rapid progress in our understanding of the
enigmatic FRB phenomenon. We present results from a sensitive, broadband
multiwavelength X-ray and radio observational campaign of FRB 20200120E, the
closest known extragalactic repeating FRB source. At a distance of 3.63 Mpc,
FRB 20200120E resides in an exceptional location, within a ~10 Gyr-old globular
cluster in the M81 galactic system. We place deep limits on both the persistent
X-ray luminosity and prompt X-ray emission at the time of radio bursts from FRB
20200120E, which we use to constrain possible progenitors for the source. We
compare our results to various classes of X-ray sources and transients. In
particular, we find that FRB 20200120E is unlikely to be associated with:
ultraluminous X-ray bursts (ULXBs), similar to those observed from objects of
unknown origin in other extragalactic globular clusters; giant flares, like
those observed from Galactic and extragalactic magnetars; or most intermediate
flares and very bright short X-ray bursts, similar to those seen from magnetars
in the Milky Way. We show that FRB 20200120E is also unlikely to be powered by
a persistent or transient ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source or a young,
extragalactic pulsar embedded in a Crab-like nebula. We also provide new
constraints on the compatibility of FRB 20200120E with accretion-based FRB
models involving X-ray binaries and models that require a synchrotron maser
process from relativistic shocks to generate FRB emission. These results
highlight the power that multiwavelength observations of nearby FRBs can

Evaluation of Needle Exchange Programs
Needle exchange programs exist in every major population area in the United States and in many other countries. Some operate legally under emergency health decrees issued by local departments of health, with the stated intention of risk reduction through the removal of used injection equipment from use by injection drug users. It is theorized that this results in a reduced transmission of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis, and, possibly, other blood-borne diseases. Needle exchange programs also offer access to drug treatment programs for the participants. It is a difficult but necessary task to evaluate these programs. This article examines examples of evaluations attempted in the past and discusses the challenges of such evaluations. Experimental evaluations, economic program analysis, legal aspects, and risk–benefit assessment along with ethical aspects are considered. An outline of program evaluation is proposed. Needle exchange programs offer an opportunity to encourage risk reduction and to offer counseling and access to health care for individuals at high risk. It is essential that such programs demonstrate their effectiveness. Assumptions of efficacy are insufficient for health care in the twenty-first century
