Geodynamic setting and origin of the Oman/UAE ophiolite
The ~500km-long mid-Cretaceous Semail nappe of the Sultanate of Oman and UAE (henceforth referred to as the Oman ophiolite) is the largest and best-preserved ophiolite complex known. It is of particular importance because it is generally believed to have an internal structure and composition closely comparable to that of crust formed at the present-day East Pacific Rise (EPR), making it our only known on-land analogue for ocean lithosphere formed at a fast spreading rate. On the basis of this assumption Oman has long played a pivotal role in guiding our conceptual understanding of fast-spreading ridge processes, as modern fast-spread ocean crust is largely inaccessible
Development of laminar flow control wing surface porous structure
It was concluded that the chordwise air collection method, which actually combines chordwise and spanwise air collection, is the best of the designs conceived up to this time for full chord laminar flow control (LFC). Its shallower ducting improved structural efficiency of the main wing box resulting in a reduction in wing weight, and it provided continuous support of the chordwise panel joints, better matching of suction and clearing airflow requirements, and simplified duct to suction source minifolding. Laminar flow control on both the upper and lower surfaces was previously reduced to LFC suction on the upper surface only, back to 85 percent chord. The study concludes that, in addition to reduced wing area and other practical advantages, this system would be lighter because of the increase in effective structural wing thickness
Mitochondrial respiratory capacity is a critical regulator of CD8+ T cell memory development
CD8+ T cells undergo major metabolic changes upon activation, but how metabolism influences the establishment of long-lived memory T cells after infection remains a key question. We have shown here that CD8+ memory T cells, but not CD8+ T effector (Teff) cells, possessed substantial mitochondrial spare respiratory capacity (SRC). SRC is the extra capacity available in cells to produce energy in response to increased stress or work and as such is associated with cellular survival. We found that interleukin-15 (IL-15), a cytokine critical for CD8+ memory T cells, regulated SRC and oxidative metabolism by promoting mitochondrial biogenesis and expression of carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT1a), a metabolic enzyme that controls the rate-limiting step to mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation (FAO). These results show how cytokines control the bioenergetic stability of memory T cells after infection by regulating mitochondrial metabolism
Quantum Hall Effect and Quantum Point Contact in Bilayer-Patched Epitaxial Graphene
We study an epitaxial graphene monolayer with bilayer inclusions via
magnetotransport measurements and scanning gate microscopy at low temperatures.
We find that bilayer inclusions can be metallic or insulating depending on the
initial and gated carrier density. The metallic bilayers act as equipotential
shorts for edge currents, while closely spaced insulating bilayers guide the
flow of electrons in the monolayer constriction, which was locally gated using
a scanning gate probe.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A Bio-Logical Theory of Animal Learning
This article provides the foundation for a new predictive theory of animal learning that is based upon a simple logical model. The knowledge of experimental subjects at a given time is described using logical equations. These logical equations are then used to predict a subject’s response when presented with a known or a previously unknown situation. This new theory suc- cessfully anticipates phenomena that existing theories predict, as well as phenomena that they cannot. It provides a theoretical account for phenomena that are beyond the domain of existing models, such as extinction and the detection of novelty, from which “external inhibition” can be explained. Examples of the methods applied to make predictions are given using previously published results. The present theory proposes a new way to envision the minimal functions of the nervous system, and provides possible new insights into the way that brains ultimately create and use knowledge about the world
Reversing the Trend of Large Scale and Centralization in Manufacturing: The Case of Distributed Manufacturing of Customizable 3-D-Printable Self-Adjustable Glasses
Although the trend in manufacturing has been towards centralization to leverage economies of scale, the recent rapid technical development of open-source 3-D printers enables low-cost distributed bespoke production. This paper explores the potential advantages of a distributed manufacturing model of high-value products by investigating the application of 3-D printing to self-refraction eyeglasses. A series of parametric 3-D printable designs is developed, fabricated and tested to overcome limitations identified with mass-manufactured self-correcting eyeglasses designed for the developing world\u27s poor. By utilizing 3-D printable self-adjustable glasses, communities not only gain access to far more diversity in product design, as the glasses can be customized for the individual, but 3-D printing also offers the potential for significant cost reductions. The results show that distributed manufacturing with open-source 3-D printing can empower developing world communities through the ability to print less expensive and customized self-adjusting eyeglasses. This offers the potential to displace both centrally manufactured conventional and self-adjusting glasses while completely eliminating the costs of the conventional optics correction experience, including those of highly-trained optometrists and ophthalmologists and their associated equipment. Although, this study only analyzed a single product, it is clear that other products would benefit from the same approach in isolated regions of the developing world
Exact solution and surface critical behaviour of open cyclic SOS lattice models
We consider the -state cyclic solid-on-solid lattice models under a class
of open boundary conditions. The integrable boundary face weights are obtained
by solving the reflection equations. Functional relations for the fused
transfer matrices are presented for both periodic and open boundary conditions.
The eigen-spectra of the unfused transfer matrix is obtained from the
functional relations using the analytic Bethe ansatz. For a special case of
crossing parameter , the finite-size corrections to the
eigen-spectra of the critical models are obtained, from which the corresponding
conformal dimensions follow. The calculation of the surface free energy away
from criticality yields two surface specific heat exponents,

Peculiar Velocities of Galaxy Clusters
We investigate the peculiar velocities predicted for galaxy clusters by
theories in the cold dark matter family. A widely used hypothesis identifies
rich clusters with high peaks of a suitably smoothed version of the linear
density fluctuation field. Their peculiar velocities are then obtained by
extrapolating the similarly smoothed linear peculiar velocities at the
positions of these peaks. We test these ideas using large high resolution
N-body simulations carried out within the Virgo supercomputing consortium. We
find that at early times the barycentre of the material which ends up in a rich
cluster is generally very close to a high peak of the initial density field.
Furthermore the mean peculiar velocity of this material agrees well with the
linear value at the peak. The late-time growth of peculiar velocities is,
however, systematically underestimated by linear theory. At the time clusters
are identified we find their rms peculiar velocity to be about 40% larger than
predicted. Nonlinear effects are particularly important in superclusters. These
systematics must be borne in mind when using cluster peculiar velocities to
estimate the parameter combination .Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; submitted to MNRA
Nature versus Nurture: The curved spine of the galaxy cluster X-ray luminosity -- temperature relation
The physical processes that define the spine of the galaxy cluster X-ray
luminosity -- temperature (L-T) relation are investigated using a large
hydrodynamical simulation of the Universe. This simulation models the same
volume and phases as the Millennium Simulation and has a linear extent of 500
h^{-1} Mpc. We demonstrate that mergers typically boost a cluster along but
also slightly below the L-T relation. Due to this boost we expect that all of
the very brightest clusters will be near the peak of a merger. Objects from
near the top of the L-T relation tend to have assembled much of their mass
earlier than an average halo of similar final mass. Conversely, objects from
the bottom of the relation are often experiencing an ongoing or recent merger.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA
