UK survey of occupational therapistâs and physiotherapistâs experiences and attitudes towards hip replacement precautions and equipment
Background: Total hip replacement (THR) is one of the most common orthopaedic procedures in the United Kingdom (UK). Historically, people following THR have been provided with hip precautions and equipment such as: raised toilet seats and furniture rises, in order to reduce the risks of dislocation post-operation. The purpose of this study was to determine current practices in the provision of these interventions in the UK for people following primary THR. Methods: A 27-question, self-administered online survey was developed and distributed to UK physiotherapists and occupational therapists involved in the management of people following primary THR (target respondents). The survey included questions regarding the current practices in the provision of equipment and hip precautions for THR patients, and physiotherapistâs and occupational therapistâs attitudes towards these practices. The survey was disseminated through print and web-based/social media channels. Results: 170 health professionals (87 physiotherapists and 83 occupational therapists), responded to the survey. Commonly prescribed equipment in respondentâs health trusts were raised toilet seats (95%), toilet frames and rails (88%), furniture raises (79%), helping hands/grabbers (77%), perching stools (75%) and long-handled shoe horns (75%). Hip precautions were routinely prescribed by 97% of respondents. Hip precautions were most frequently taught in a pre-operative group (52% of respondents). Similarly equipment was most frequently provided pre-operatively (61% respondents), and most commonly by occupational therapists (74% respondents). There was variability in the advice provided on the duration of hip precautions and equipment from up to six weeks post-operatively to life-time usage. Conclusions: Current practice on hip precautions and provision of equipment is not full representative of clinicianâs perceptions of best care after THR. Future research is warranted to determine whether and to whom hip precautions and equipment should be prescribed post-THR as opposed to the current âblanketâ provision of equipment and movement restriction provided in UK practice
Production properties of K*(892) vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin
alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions
are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is
performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in
nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following
yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1
(stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons
produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/-
0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The
results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst)
and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC
interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements
in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. For K*+ mesons produced in nu NC
interactions the measured rho00 parameter is 0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.05
(syst).Comment: 20 p
Search for CP violation in the decay B0->D*+-D-+
We report a search for CP-violating asymmetry in B0 -> D*+- D-+ decays. The
analysis employs two methods of B0 reconstruction: full and partial. In the
full reconstruction method all daughter particles of the B0 are required to be
detected; the partial reconstruction technique requires a fully reconstructed
D- and only a slow pion from the D*+ -> D0 pi_slow+ decay. From a fit to the
distribution of the time interval corresponding to the distance between two B
meson decay points we calculate the CP-violating parameters and find the
significance of nonzero CP asymmetry to be 2.7 standard deviations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Search for D-0-D-0(-) mixing in D-0 -> K+pi(-) decays and measurement of the doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay rate
We have searched for mixing in the Ddegrees-(D) over cap (0) D-0 system by measuring the decay-time distribution of D0 ! K(+)pi(-) decays. The analysis uses 90 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+) e(-) collider. We fit the decay-time distribution for the mixing parameters x(1) and y(1) and also for the parameter R-D, which is the ratio of the rate for the doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay D-0--> K(+)pi(-) to that for the Cabibbo-favored decay D-0 --> K- pi(+). We do these fits both assuming CP conservation and allowing for CP violation. We use a frequentist method to obtain a 95% C. L. region in the x(J2)- y(l) plane. Assuming no mixing, we measure R-D=(0: 381 +/- 0: 017 (+) (0.008)(-0.016))%
Measurements of the branching fraction and polarization in B+->rho K-+(*0) decays
We present the results of a study of the charmless vector-vector decay B+->rho K-+(*0), based on 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We obtain the branching fraction B(B+->rho K-+(*0))=[8.9 +/- 1.7(stat)+/- 1.2(syst)]x10(-6). We also perform a helicity analysis of the rho and K-* vector mesons, and obtain the longitudinal polarization fraction f(L)(B+->rho K-+(*0))=0.43 +/- 0.11(stat)(-0.02)(+0.05)(syst)
Measurements of B decays to two kaons
We report measurements of B meson decays to two kaons using 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find evidence for signals in B+->(K) over bar K-0(+) and B-0-> K-0(K) over bar (0) with significances of 3.0 sigma and 3.5 sigma, respectively. (Charge-conjugate modes are included.) The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(B+->(K) over bar K-0(+))=(1.0 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.1)x10(-6) and B(B-0-> K-0(K) over bar (0))=(0.8 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.1)x10(-6). These decay modes are examples of hadronic b -> d transitions. No signal is observed in the decay B-0-> K+K-, and we set an upper limit of 3.7x10(-7) at 90% confidence level
Measurement of polarization and triple-product correlations in B -> phi K-* decays
We present measurements of decay amplitudes and triple-product correlations in B ->phi K-* decays based on 253 fb(-1) of data recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring. The decay amplitudes for the three different helicity states are determined from the angular distributions of final-state particles. The longitudinal polarization amplitudes are found to be 0.45 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.02 for B-0->phi K-*0 and 0.52 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.03 for B+->phi K*+ decays. CP- and T-odd CP-violating triple-product asymmetries are measured to be consistent with zero
Search for a new gauge boson in decays
A search was made for a new light gauge boson which might be produced in
decay from neutral pions generated by 450-GeV protons in
the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding
and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process
of conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With
protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between
8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data.
This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.12.8 background
events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the
branching ratio for
masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c^2 is obtained.Comment: 15 pages, LaTex, 6 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters
