Advances in optimal routing through computer networks
The optimal routing problem is defined. Progress in solving the problem during the previous decade is reviewed, with special emphasis on technical developments made during the last few years. The relationships between the routing, the throughput, and the switching technology used are discussed and their future trends are reviewed. Economic aspects are also briefly considered. Modern technical approaches for handling the routing problems and, more generally, the flow control problems are reviewed
An Effective Field Theory Look at Deep Inelastic Scattering
This talk discusses the effective field theory view of deep inelastic
scattering. In such an approach, the standard factorization formula of a hard
coefficient multiplied by a parton distribution function arises from matching
of QCD onto an effective field theory. The DGLAP equations can then be viewed
as the standard renormalization group equations that determines the cut-off
dependence of the non-local operator whose forward matrix element is the parton
distribution function. As an example, the non-singlet quark splitting functions
is derived directly from the renormalization properties of the non-local
operator itself. This approach, although discussed in the literature, does not
appear to be well known to the larger high energy community. In this talk we

Atomic Focusing by Quantum Fields: Entanglement Properties
The coherent manipulation of the atomic matter waves is of great interest
both in science and technology. In order to study how an atom optic device
alters the coherence of an atomic beam, we consider the quantum lens proposed
by Averbukh et al [1] to show the discrete nature of the electromagnetic field.
We extend the analysis of this quantum lens to the study of another essentially
quantum property present in the focusing process, i.e., the atom-field
entanglement, and show how the initial atomic coherence and purity are affected
by the entanglement. The dynamics of this process is obtained in closed form.
We calculate the beam quality factor and the trace of the square of the reduced
density matrix as a function of the average photon number in order to analyze
the coherence and purity of the atomic beam during the focusing process.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Neural correlates of phonological, orthographic and semantic reading processing in dyslexia
Developmental dyslexia is one of the most prevalent learning disabilities, thought to be associated with dysfunction in the neural systems underlying typical reading acquisition. Neuroimaging research has shown that readers with dyslexia exhibit regional hypoactivation in left hemisphere reading nodes, relative to control counterparts. This evidence, however, comes from studies that have focused only on isolated aspects of reading. The present study aims to characterize left hemisphere regional hypoactivation in readers with dyslexia for the main processes involved in successful reading: phonological, orthographic and semantic. Forty-one participants performed a demanding reading task during MRI scanning. Results showed that readers with dyslexia exhibited hypoactivation associated with phonological processing in parietal regions; with orthographic processing in parietal regions, Broca's area, ventral occipitotemporal cortex and thalamus; and with semantic processing in angular gyrus and hippocampus. Stronger functional connectivity was observed for readers with dyslexia than for control readers 1) between the thalamus and the inferior parietal cortex/ventral occipitotemporal cortex during pseudoword reading; and, 2) between the hippocampus and the pars opercularis during word reading. These findings constitute the strongest evidence to date for the interplay between regional hypoactivation and functional connectivity in the main processes supporting reading in dyslexia. Selective and Efficient Quantum Process Tomography
In this paper we describe in detail and generalize a method for quantum
process tomography that was presented in [A. Bendersky, F. Pastawski, J. P.
Paz, Physical Review Letters 100, 190403 (2008)]. The method enables the
efficient estimation of any element of the --matrix of a quantum process.
Such elements are estimated as averages over experimental outcomes with a
precision that is fixed by the number of repetitions of the experiment.
Resources required to implement it scale polynomically with the number of
qubits of the system. The estimation of all diagonal elements of the
--matrix can be efficiently done without any ancillary qubits. In turn,
the estimation of all the off-diagonal elements requires an extra clean qubit.
The key ideas of the method, that is based on efficient estimation by random
sampling over a set of states forming a 2--design, are described in detail.
Efficient methods for preparing and detecting such states are explicitly shown.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Spanish validation of the revised depression attitude questionnaire (R-daq)
Purpose: The aim of the study was to develop and validate a Spanish version of the Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire (R-DAQ). Methods: The R-DAQ was used as a baseline for the study. It was translated and tested to ensure the instrument was appropriate for the target population. 537 Ecuadorian healthcare professionals completed the revised Spanish version of the R-DAQ (SR-DAQ). Statistical and exploratory factor analyses were performed to examine construct validity, internal consistency, readability and floor and ceiling effects. Results: Three factors were obtained: “Professional confidence in depression care”; “Therapeutic optimism about depression”; and “Generalist perspective about depression occurrence, recognition, and management”. The internal consistency of the SR-DAQ was determined by means of Cronbach’s α coefficient, with values ranging between 0.61–0.8. The correlations with the English version reflected adequate validity. The model explained 39% of the variance. Subsequent analysis with a sample restricted to those who had received training in depression produced a model that explained 42% of the variance. Conclusion: The SR-DAQ meets the psychometric requirements for measuring depression attitude in a Spanish-speaking population and shows adequate internal consistency and validity
