Energy Dispersive X-Ray Diffraction System as a Promising Virtual Biopsy in Mammography
International audienceX-ray diffraction is a powerful technique to provide information on the molecular structure of samples. Thanks to this property, it has been found to be useful in different fields of applications such as security check and cancer research, especially breast cancer. A diffraction imaging might bemore specific than conventional mammography, especially to distinguish dense healthy fibroglandular tissues from carcinoma.Hence, the idea is to realize a virtual biopsy using Xray diffraction rather than a breast biopsy if mammography outcome is unsure
Cette méthode a été validée sur des données simulées de diffraction X. Abstract – Receiver operation charactéristics (ROC) are used to study the discrimination power of a system or test between two distributions A and B. In general, ROC curves are obtained by producing numerous observations of A and B. In this paper, we propose an analytical ROC calculation method based on information geometry. This method has been tested on simulated X-ray diffraction data
Assessment of short-term aquifer thermal energy storage for demand-side management perspectives : experimental and numerical developments
In the context of demand-side management and geothermal energy production, our proposal is to store thermal energy in shallow alluvial aquifers at shorter frequencies than classical seasonal aquifer thermal energy storage. We first conducted a one-week experiment in a shallow alluvial aquifer, which is characterized by a slow ambient groundwater flow, to assess its potential for thermal energy storage and recovery. This experiment has shown that up to 90% of the stored thermal energy can be recovered and would therefore suggest that aquifer thermal energy storage could be considered for demand-side management applications. We then conceptualized, developed, and calibrated a deterministic 3D groundwater flow and heat transport numerical model representing our study site, and we simulated 77 different scenarios to further assess this potential. This has allowed us to demonstrate that low-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (temperature differences of −4 K for precooling and 3, 6, and 11 K for preheating) is efficient with energy recovery rates ranging from 78 to 87%, in a single aquifer thermal energy storage cycle. High-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (temperature differences between 35 and 65 K) presents lower energy recovery rates, from 53 to 71%, with all other parameters remaining equals. Energy recovery rates decrease with increasing storage duration and this decrease is faster for higher temperatures. Retrieving directly useful heat (without upgrading with a groundwater heat pump) using only a single storage and recovery cycle appears to be complicated. Nevertheless, there is room for aquifer thermal energy storage optimization in space and time with regard to improving both the energy recovery rates and the recovered absolute temperatures
Weak short-term survival of radio-tagged Pin-tailed Sangrouse (Pterocles alchata) in France raises questions about capture and attached transmitters
Radio-telemetry is widely used by conservation biologists for collecting data on habitat use by animal species, a central topic in population ecology. For this purpose, the capture of individuals and attachment of transmitters on animals are necessary. Those actions might have a harmful effect on birds but when species are difficult to detect it remains the only method available. We report results of a radio-telemetry study on Pin-tailed Sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) in France. Although the capture and attachment of transmitters are possible, short-term mortality is very high. Collected data do not explain such a rate. We compare those results to a recent study on the same species in Spain and to a meta-analysis on birds
Predictors of change in asthma-related quality of life: a longitudinal real-life study in adult asthmatics.
peer reviewed("[en] PURPOSE: Asthma negatively impacts health-related quality of life (HRQL). The objective is to investigate the longitudinal relationship between HRQL in asthma and disease control, demographic and clinical objective parameters in an adult population in real-life settings.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study on adult asthmatics recruited from Liege University Hospital Asthma Clinic (Belgium) between 2011 and 2019. We selected those who had two visits and completed two patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), the asthma control test (ACT) and the mini asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) (n = 290). AQLQ was the dependent variable. Demographic, functional and inflammatory characteristics, asthma control, and exacerbations were the independent variables. We applied generalized linear mixed models to identify the factors associated with change in AQLQ and its dimensions.
RESULTS: Median (IQR) time interval between the two visits was 7 (5-19) months. Overall, median (IQR) global AQLQ increased from 4.1 (3-5.1) to 4.6 (3.4-5.9) (p < 0.0001). All AQLQ dimensions significantly improved, apart the environmental one. AQLQ improved in patients who had both step-up and step-down pharmacological treatment as well as in patients reporting no change between the two visits. The fitted models indicated that change in ACT was the main predictor of change in AQLQ (p < 0.0001). A rise in 3 units in ACT predicted an improvement of 0.5 AQLQ (AUC-ROC = 0.85; p < 0.0001). Change in BMI inversely impacted global AQLQ (p < 0.01) and its activity dimension (p < 0.0001).
CONCLUSION: Asthma control and BMI are key predictors of asthma quality of life acting in an opposite direction. AQLQ may improve without step-up in the pharmacological treatment.","[en] ",""
Group diversity and group identification:the moderating role of diversity beliefs
Research on diversity in teams and organizations has revealed ambiguous results regarding the effects of group composition on workgroup performance. The categorization—elaboration model (van Knippenberg et al., 2004) accounts for this variety and proposes two different underlying processes. On the one hand diversity may bring about intergroup bias which leads to less group identification, which in turn is followed by more conflict and decreased workgroup performance. On the other hand, the information processing approach proposes positive effects of diversity because of a more elaborate processing of information brought about by a wider pool and variety of perspectives in more diverse groups. We propose that the former process is contingent on individual team members' beliefs that diversity is good or bad for achieving the team's aims. We predict that the relationship between subjective diversity and identification is more positive in ethnically diverse project teams when group members hold beliefs that are pro-diversity. Results of two longitudinal studies involving postgraduate students working in project teams confirm this hypothesis. Analyses further reveal that group identification is positively related to students' desire to stay in their groups and to their information elaboration. Finally, we found evidence for the expected moderated mediation model with indirect effects of subjective diversity on elaboration and the desire to stay, mediated through group identification, moderated by diversity beliefs
Post-traumatic stress among COVID-19 survivors: A descriptive study of hospitalized first-wave survivors
Introduction: The coronavirus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Type 1 induces a severe respiratory disease, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). After Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Type 1 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome infection, increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rates were described.
Methods: This single-centred, prospective study aimed to evaluate the rates of PTSD in patients who were hospitalized for COVID-19. Inclusion criteria were COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) or in a standard unit with at least 2 L/min oxygen. Six months post-hospitalization, subjects were assessed for PTSD using a validated screening tool, the Post-Traumatic Stress Checklist-5 (PCL-5).
Results: A total of 40 patients were included. No demographic differences between the ICU and non-ICU groups were found. The mean PCL-5 score for
the population was 8.85±10. The mean PCL-5 score was 6.7±8 in the ICU group and 10.5±11 in the non-ICU group (P=0.27). We screened one patient
with a positive PCL-5 score and one with a possible PCL-5 cluster score. Nine patients had a PCL-5 score of up to 15. Seven patients reported no symptoms.Seven patients accepted a psychological follow-up: one for PTSD, three for possible PTSD and three for other psychological problems.
Discussion: The PCL-5 tool can be used by lung physicians during consultations to identify patients for whom follow-up mental health assessment and treatment for PTSD are warranted.
Conclusion: Lung physicians should be aware of the risk of PTSD in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and ensure appropriate screening and follow-up care
Ornithological report 2001-2006 for the Camargue
The present ornithological report for the Camargue covers six years (2001-2006). This time-period has been marked by an accelerated global warming (the summer 2003 was particularly extreme). Owing to a constant high observation
pressure, 18 new species have been recorded and many rare species have been resighted in that region (Camargue, Crau, Alpilles). Among the species or group of species which are regularly censused, the number of breeding Greater Flamingos Phoenicopterus roseus and that of wintering ducks and
coots did not show any significant change. The colonial herons have continued either to increase or to fluctuate at a high level. For example, the Great White Egret Casmerodius albus has definitely settled in the delta and the Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides has reached a new peak of 505
pairs in 2006. More efficient prospection efforts gave more precise breeding numbers for two species of solitary herons, the Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris and the Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus. New breeding species such as the Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo, White Stork Ciconia
ciconia, Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia and Greylag Anser anser increased their numbers as well as the Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus of which 14 pairs has bred in 2006 and the Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio which was found for the first time breeding in 2006. The breeding
species showing the most serious concern are actually the breeding gulls and terns whose figures have dramatically decreased. Without human management, this situation will even become worse in a near future. Further remarkable observations were the first case of wintering Lesser Spotted
