Conformal Field Theories in Fractional Dimensions
We study the conformal bootstrap in fractional space-time dimensions,
obtaining rigorous bounds on operator dimensions. Our results show strong
evidence that there is a family of unitary CFTs connecting the 2D Ising model,
the 3D Ising model, and the free scalar theory in 4D. We give numerical
predictions for the leading operator dimensions and central charge in this
family at different values of D and compare these to calculations of phi^4

Transition from University to the labour market: the impact of personal variables in graduatesâ perceptions of self-efficacy
The transition from university to the labour market is a crucial period for graduates. It is typically characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. Self-efficacy may be a determinant in the process, but the research so far has only considered students or graduates shortly after graduation, strongly compromising its conclusions on the findings. This study aims at exploring the variables which explain the different levels of self-efficacy of graduates in transition to the labour market. A total of 694 graduates who completed their degrees at two Portuguese Higher Education Institutions in the last five years were subjected to a questionnaire. Regression and multivariate analyses based on decision trees (Recursive Partitioning for Classification) showed that (1) older graduates have higher self-efficacy in adapting to work; (2) male graduates have higher self-efficacy in emotional regulation when looking for a job; and (3) graduates with higher grades demonstrated more self-efficacy in job-seeking behaviours. The results also revealed that the graduatesâ scientific area, the parentsâ level of education and undergoing internships during higher education are also related to self-efficacy. Conformal invariance in the long-range Ising model
We consider the question of conformal invariance of the long-range Ising model at the critical point. The continuum description is given in terms of a nonlocal field theory, and the absence of a stress tensor invalidates all of the standard arguments for the enhancement of scale invariance to conformal invariance. We however show that several correlation functions, computed to second order in the epsilon expansion, are nontrivially consistent with conformal invariance. We proceed to give a proof of conformal invariance to all orders in the epsilon expansion, based on the description of the long-range Ising model as a defect theory in an auxiliary higher-dimensional space. A detailed review of conformal invariance in the d-dimensional short-range Ising model is also included and may be of independent interest
Developing low-cost household water supply options: the potential of self supply in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has launched a Universal Access Plan (UAP) to achieve safe water supply and sanitation for the
countryâs 77 million people by 2012. This would mean providing safe water service to 50.9 million new
users in just 7 years. The government recently reviewed the progress of UAP and concluded that it would
be challenging to achieve its targets with the existing implementation approach. The review strongly
recommended that lowcost
options need to be pursued to accelerate progress. Self Supply is proposed to
be one such approach, providing safe water supply to households without external subsidy. This paper
briefly discusses the practice and potential of Self Supply approachÍŸ and proposes key next steps needed
to help achieve the UAP target for safe water supply in Ethiopia
Massive Gravity Theories and limits of Ghost-free Bigravity models
We construct a class of theories which extend New Massive Gravity to higher
orders in curvature in any dimension. The lagrangians arise as limits of a new
class of bimetric theories of Lovelock gravity, which are unitary theories free
from the Boulware-Deser ghost. These Lovelock bigravity models represent the
most general non-chiral ghost-free theories of an interacting massless and
massive spin-two field in any dimension. The scaling limit is taken in such a
way that unitarity is explicitly broken, but the Boulware-Deser ghost remains
absent. This automatically implies the existence of a holographic -theorem
for these theories. We also show that the Born-Infeld extension of New Massive
Gravity falls into our class of models demonstrating that this theory is also
free of the Boulware-Deser ghost. These results extend existing connections
between New Massive Gravity, bigravity theories, Galileon theories and

Findings of a review of spacecraft fire safety needs
Discussions from a workshop to guide UCLA and NASA investigators on the state of knowledge and perceived needs in spacecraft fire safety and its risk management are reviewed, for an introduction to an analytical and experimental project in this field. The report summarizes the workshop discussions and includes the visual aids used in the presentations. Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) methods, which are currently not used, would be of great value to the designs and operation of future human-crew spacecraft. Key points in the discussions were the importance of understanding and testing smoldering as a likely fire scenario in space and the need for smoke damage modeling, since many fire-risk models ignore this mechanism and consider only heat damage
Solving the 3D Ising Model with the Conformal Bootstrap
We study the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity in general 3D
Conformal Field Theories. In doing so we derive new results for conformal
blocks appearing in four-point functions of scalars and present an efficient
method for their computation in arbitrary space-time dimension. Comparing the
resulting bounds on operator dimensions and OPE coefficients in 3D to known
results, we find that the 3D Ising model lies at a corner point on the boundary
of the allowed parameter space. We also derive general upper bounds on the
dimensions of higher spin operators, relevant in the context of theories with

Folate-targeted immunotherapy effectively treats established adjuvant and collagen-induced arthritis
Activated macrophages express a cell surface receptor for the vitamin folic acid. Because this receptor is inaccessible or not measurably expressed on other normal cells, folic acid has been recently exploited to selectively deliver attached radio-emitters to sites of activated macrophage accumulation, allowing scintigraphic imaging of inflamed joints and organs of arthritic rats. We demonstrate here that folate-linked haptens can also be targeted to activated macrophages, decorating their cell surfaces with highly immunogenic molecules. Under conditions in which the rodent has already been immunized against keyhole limpet hemocyanine-(fluorescein isothiocyanate) FITC, activated macrophages are eliminated. Administration of folate-FITC conjugates to rodents with experimental arthritis attenuates (a) systemic and peri-articular inflammation, (b) bone and cartilage degradation, and (c) arthritis-related body weight loss. Treatment with folate-hapten conjugates is comparable to methotrexate, etanercept, anakinra, and celecoxib at alleviating the symptoms of arthritis. We conclude that reduction of activated macrophages by folate-targeted immunotherapy can ameliorate the symptoms of arthritis in two rodent models of the disease

PosterVote:expanding the action repertoire for local political activism
Online and digital technologies support and extend the action repertoires of localized social movements. In this paper we examine the ways by which digital technologies can support âon-the-ground â activist communities in the development of social movements. After identifying some of the challenges of deploying conventional voting and consultation technologies for activism, we examine situated political action in local communities through the design and deployment of a low-cost community voting prototype, PosterVote. We deploy PosterVote in two case studies with two local community organizations identifying the features that supported or hindered grassroots democratic practices. Through interviews with these communities, we explore the design of situated voting systems to support grassroots democratic practices and participation within an ecology of social action.
