© 2023 by the authors. While extensive efforts have been made over the past two decades to understand how cork becomes contaminated by 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), the nature of its bond to cork remains unclear. A deeper understanding of this interaction is crucial in designing processes to effectively remove TCA from cork stoppers. This study presents an investigation into the thermal desorption of TCA from cork under vacuum conditions. To facilitate detection by a quadrupole mass spectrometer, samples were artificially contaminated with sufficient TCA. A calibration system was developed to determine the absolute rate of TCA released from the cork. Desorption spectra revealed two peaks at 80 °C and 170 °C. Despite the known variability of cork, repeated measurements demonstrated reasonable repeatability. The low-temperature peak decreased with time and after preheating the sample to 50 °C. It is proposed that the high-temperature peak corresponds to TCA bonded to the cork material. Experiments with naturally contaminated cork stoppers revealed a significant reduction in the amount of releasable TCA following a vacuum-heating process. This study provides an insightful discussion on the adsorption of TCA on cork and proposes an estimate for the adsorption energy. Furthermore, it discloses a process capable of removing TCA from natural cork stoppers.publishersversionpublishe

Polylactic Acid/Carbon Nanoparticle Composite Filaments for Sensing
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bio-based, biodegradable polymer that presents high potential for biomedical and sensing applications. Ongoing works reported in the literature concern mainly applications based on 3D printing, while textile applications are hindered by the limited flexibility of PLA and its composite filaments. In the present work, PLA/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite filaments were produced with enhanced flexibility and electrical conductivity, which may be applied on a textile structure. A biodegradable plasticizer was incorporated in the nanocomposites, aiming at improving MWCNT dispersion and increasing the flexibility of the filaments. Filaments were produced with a range of compositions and their morphology was characterized as well as their thermal, thermomechanical, and electrical properties. Selected compositions were tested for sensing activity using saturated acetone vapor, demonstrating a suitable response and potential for the application in fabrics with sensing capacity
Zigzag graphene nanoribbon edge reconstruction with stone-wales defects
In this paper, we study zigzag graphene nanoribbons with edges reconstructed with Stone-Wales defects, by
means of an empirical (first-neighbor) tight-binding method, with parameters determined by ab initio calculations
of very narrow ribbons. We explore the characteristics of the electronic band structure with a focus on the nature
of edge states. Edge reconstruction allows the appearance of a new type of edge states. They are dispersive,
with nonzero amplitudes in both sublattices; furthermore, the amplitudes have two components that decrease
with different decay lengths with the distance from the edge; at the Dirac points one of these lengths diverges,
whereas the other remains finite, of the order of the lattice parameter. We trace this curious effect to the doubling
of the unit cell along the edge, brought about by the edge reconstruction. In the presence of a magnetic field, the
zero-energy Landau level is no longer degenerate with edge states as in the case of the pristine zigzag ribbon.
a Beira Interior.
Acoustic image-based damage identification of oxide aluminum grinding wheel during the dressing operation
Abstract Grinding is a finish process of parts that require high precision and tight dimensional tolerance, which owe high value-added. As the grinding process takes place, the cutting surface of the grinding wheel undergoes wear and then its cutting capacity is reduced. On the other hand, the dressing operation is responsible for restoring the cutting surface of the grinding wheel and, therefore, plays a key role in the grinding process. This work aims at obtaining acoustic images of the grinding wheel surface to identify its conditions during the dressing operation. Experimental tests were conducted with a single-point diamond dresser in a surface grinding machine, which was equipped with an oxide aluminum grinding wheel in which specific marks were intentionally made on its surface to simulate damages for identification. An acoustic emission sensor was fixed to the dresser holder and the signal were acquired at 5 MHz. The signal spectrum was investigated and a frequency band was carefully selected, which represented the conditions of grinding wheel surface. The root mean square values were then computed from the raw signal with and without filtering for several integration periods, and the acoustic images obtained. The results show that the proposed technique is efficient to identify the damage on the wheel surface during the dressing operation as well as its location

Advancing logistics 4.0 with the implementation of a big data warehouse: a demonstration case for the automotive industry
The constant advancements in Information Technology have been the main driver of the Big Data concept’s success. With it, new concepts such as Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0 are arising. Due to the increase in data volume, velocity, and variety, organizations are now looking to their data analytics infrastructures and searching for approaches to improve their decision-making capabilities, in order to enhance their results using new approaches such as Big Data and Machine Learning. The implementation of a Big Data Warehouse can be the first step to improve the organizations’ data analysis infrastructure and start retrieving value from the usage of Big Data technologies. Moving to Big Data technologies can provide several opportunities for organizations, such as the capability of analyzing an enormous quantity of data from different data sources in an efficient way. However, at the same time, different challenges can arise, including data quality, data management, and lack of knowledge within the organization, among others. In this work, we propose an approach that can be adopted in the logistics department of any organization in order to promote the Logistics 4.0 movement, while highlighting the main challenges and opportunities associated with the development and implementation of a Big Data Warehouse in a real demonstration case at a multinational automotive organization. This work was supported by FCT–Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia—within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020 and doctoral scholarship grants: PD/BDE/142895/2018 and PD/BDE/142900/2018
