This work focuses on the separation and quantification of fixed bulk oxide charge, fixed charge at the dielectric–semiconductor interface and interface state charge components in the Pt/Al2O3/In0.53Ga0.47As metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system. The availability of atomic layer deposited Al2O3 dielectrics over n- and p-type In0.53Ga0.47As with a range of well-controlled thickness values opens up an experimental route for the determination of the interface state density (Dit) independently of the total fixed oxide charge using capacitance–voltage measurements taken at 1 MHz and −50°C. Low temperature forming gas annealing (350°C) significantly reduces the amount of fixed charge. The interface fixed charge is reduced from ∼ −8.5 × 1012 cm−2 preanneal to ∼ −7.4 × 1011 cm−2 postanneal and the bulk oxide charge is reduced from ∼1.4 × 1019 cm−3 preanneal to ∼5 × 1018 cm−3 postanneal. The forming gas anneal also has a significant effect on the interface state charge, reducing its density from 1.3 × 1013cm−2 preanneal to 4 × 1012 cm−2 postanneal

A straw drift chamber spectrometer for studies of rare kaon decays

We describe the design, construction, readout, tests, and performance of planar drift chambers, based on 5 mm diameter copperized Mylar and Kapton straws, used in an experimental search for rare kaon decays. The experiment took place in the high-intensity neutral beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory, using a neutral beam stop, two analyzing dipoles, and redundant particle identification to remove backgrounds

Anyonic physical observables and spin phase transition

The quantization of charged matter system coupled to Chern-Simons gauge fields is analyzed in a covariant gauge fixing, and gauge invariant physical anyon operators satisfying fractional statistics are constructed in a symmetric phase, based on Dirac's recipe performed on QED. This method provides us a definite way of identifying physical spectrums free from gauge ambiguity and constructing physical anyon operators under a covariant gauge fixing. We then analyze the statistical spin phase transition in a symmetry-broken phase and show that the Higgs mechanism transmutes an anyon satisfying fractional statistics into a canonical boson, a spin 0 Higgs boson or a topologically massive photon.Comment: 14 pages, added references, a few improvement

Scale-free static and dynamical correlations in melts of monodisperse and Flory-distributed homopolymers: A review of recent bond-fluctuation model studies

It has been assumed until very recently that all long-range correlations are screened in three-dimensional melts of linear homopolymers on distances beyond the correlation length ξ\xi characterizing the decay of the density fluctuations. Summarizing simulation results obtained by means of a variant of the bond-fluctuation model with finite monomer excluded volume interactions and topology violating local and global Monte Carlo moves, we show that due to an interplay of the chain connectivity and the incompressibility constraint, both static and dynamical correlations arise on distances rξr \gg \xi. These correlations are scale-free and, surprisingly, do not depend explicitly on the compressibility of the solution. Both monodisperse and (essentially) Flory-distributed equilibrium polymers are considered.Comment: 60 pages, 49 figure

Neuropilin 1 balances β8 integrin-activated TGFβ signaling to control sprouting angiogenesis in the brain

© 2015. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd. Angiogenesis in the developing central nervous system (CNS) is regulated by neuroepithelial cells, although the genes and pathways that couple these cells to blood vessels remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we have used biochemical, cell biological and molecular genetic approaches to demonstrate that β8 integrin (Itgb8) and neuropilin 1 (Nrp1) cooperatively promote CNS angiogenesis by mediating adhesion and signaling events between neuroepithelial cells and vascular endothelial cells. β8 integrin in the neuroepithelium promotes the activation of extracellular matrix (ECM)-bound latent transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) ligands and stimulates TGFβ receptor signaling in endothelial cells. Nrp1 in endothelial cells suppresses TGFβ activation and signaling by forming intercellular protein complexes with β8 integrin. Cell type-specific ablation of β8 integrin, Nrp1, or canonical TGFβ receptors results in pathological angiogenesis caused by defective neuroepithelial cell-endothelial cell adhesion and imbalances in canonical TGFβ signaling. Collectively, these data identify a paracrine signaling pathway that links the neuroepithelium to blood vessels and precisely balances TGFβ signaling during cerebral angiogenesis

Evolution of Linear Absorption and Nonlinear Optical Properties in V-Shaped Ruthenium(II)-Based Chromophores

In this article, we describe a series of complexes with electron-rich cis-{Ru^(II)(NH_3)_4}^(2+) centers coordinated to two pyridyl ligands bearing N-methyl/arylpyridinium electron-acceptor groups. These V-shaped dipolar species are new, extended members of a class of chromophores first reported by us (Coe, B. J. et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 4845−4859). They have been isolated as their PF_6− salts and characterized by using various techniques including ^1H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry. Reversible Ru^(III/II) waves show that the new complexes are potentially redox-switchable chromophores. Single crystal X-ray structures have been obtained for four complex salts; three of these crystallize noncentrosymmetrically, but with the individual molecular dipoles aligned largely antiparallel. Very large molecular first hyperpolarizabilities β have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) with an 800 nm laser and also via Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic studies on the intense, visible d → π^* metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) and π → π^* intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) bands. The latter measurements afford total nonresonant β_0 responses as high as ca. 600 × 10^(−30) esu. These pseudo-C_(2v) chromophores show two substantial components of the β tensor, β_(zzz) and β_(zyy), although the relative significance of these varies with the physical method applied. According to HRS, β_(zzz) dominates in all cases, whereas the Stark analyses indicate that β_(zyy) is dominant in the shorter chromophores, but β_(zzz) and β_(zyy) are similar for the extended species. In contrast, finite field calculations predict that β_(zyy) is always the major component. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations predict increasing ILCT character for the nominally MLCT transitions and accompanying blue-shifts of the visible absorptions, as the ligand π-systems are extended. Such unusual behavior has also been observed with related 1D complexes (Coe, B. J. et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004, 126, 3880−3891)
