Stability for an inverse problem for a two speed hyperbolic pde in one space dimension

We prove stability for a coefficient determination problem for a two velocity 2x2 system of hyperbolic PDEs in one space dimension.Comment: Revised Version. Give more detail and correct the proof of Proposition 4 regarding the existence and regularity of the forward problem. No changes to the proof of the stability of the inverse problem. Trust and Ethics in Finance : Innovative ideas from the Robin Cosgrove Prize

    Get PDF
The values that guide finance professionals and the core role played by trust in the modern finance industry have been the dominant themes of the best papers submitted for the Robin Cosgrove Prize since it was launched in 2006. Inviting young people to submit innovative ideas to advance ethical approaches to the world of finance in its many manifestations has stimulated a global debate on the role of ethics and integrity in finance. It is important to note that the prize was launched before the topic of ethics in finance became fashionable. It is not a reactive exercise to the current crisis. The aim is to prompt a shift in thinking throughout the world of finance – the fresh ideas submitted for the prize have global relevance. The twenty-three essays in this volume come from young researchers on six continents; their innovative ideas will contribute to future-oriented ethical solutions

Failed Secular Revolutions: Religious Belief, Competition, and Extremism

    Get PDF
All advanced economies have undergone secular revolutions in which religious belief and institutions have been subordinated to secular forms of authority. There are, however, numerous examples of failed secular transitions. To understand these failures, we present a religious club model with endogenous entry and cultural transmission of religious beliefs. A spike in the demand for religious belief, due for example to a negative economic shock, induces a new and more extreme organization to enter the religious market and exploit the dissatisfaction of highly religious types with the religious incumbent. The eect is larger where institutional secularization is more advanced, for example where the religious establishment has moderated itself or has been moderated by the political authority. The greater the moderation of the religious incumbent, the more extreme is the position chosen by the religious entrant, and the larger is the rise in religious participation. Hence, unanticipated shifts in religious demand can lead to the emergence of new and more extreme religious organizations, and reverse previous trends toward secularization. Our model sheds light on the causes and consequences of failed secular revolutions and religious revivals in Latin America and Egypt

Figures of speech : figurative expressions and the management of topic transition in conversation

    Get PDF
In conversation, speakers occasionally use figurative expressions such as “had a good innings,” “take with a pinch of salt,” or “come to the end of her tether.” This article investigates WHERE in conversation such expressions are used, in terms of their sequential distribution. One clear distributional pattern is found: Figurative expressions occur regularly in topic transition sequences, and specifically in the turn where a topic is summarized, thereby initiating the closing of a topic. The paper discusses some of the distinctive features of the topic termination/transition sequences with which figurative closings are associated, particularly participants' orientation to their moving to new topics. Finally, the interactional use of figurative expressions is considered in the context of instances where their use fails to secure topical closure, manifesting some conflict (disaffiliation, etc.) between the participants

Addressing the Elephant in the Cloudless Sky:Designing a Commonised Mobile Network Infrastructure

    Get PDF
Whilst the notion of a creating a ‘cloudless sky’ by moving control and processing to the edge of the network, i.e. mobile devices, provides greater agency to users over the handling of their data, it still exists within a privately controlled networked infrastructure. Infrastructure can thus be considered the elephant in the room or in this case cloudless sky. In this paper, we address the elephant by considering a more radical and perhaps utopian perspective of providing greater user agency over the networked infrastructure itself

    We study the large time behavior of positive solutions of the semilinear parabolic equation ut=uxx+ε(g(u))x+f(u)u_t = u_{xx} + \varepsilon (g(u))_x + f(u), 03˘cx3˘cL0 \u3c x \u3c L, εR\varepsilon \in {\bf R}, subject to u(0,t)=u(L,t)=0u(0,t) = u(L,t) = 0. The model problem in which the results apply is g(u)=umg(u) = u^m and f(u)=up1m3˘cpf(u) = u^p 1 \leqq m \u3c p. The steady state problem is analyzed in some detail, and results about finite time blow up are proved
