    CrossFlow: Cross-Organizational Workflow Management for Service Outsourcing in Dynamic Virtual Enterprises

    In this report, we present the approach to cross-organizational workflow management of the CrossFlow project. CrossFlow is a European research project aiming at the support of cross-organizational workflows in dynamic virtual enterprises. The cooperation in these virtual enterprises is based on dynamic service outsourcing specified in electronic contracts. Service enactment is performed by dynamically linking the workflow management infrastructures of the involved organizations. Extended service enactment support is provided in the form of cross-organizational transaction management and process control, advanced quality of service monitoring, and support for high-level flexibility in service enactment. CrossFlow technology is realized on top of a commercial workflow management platform and applied in two real-world scenarios in the contexts of a logistics and an insurance company

    Web Services Support for Dynamic Business Process Outsourcing

    Outsourcing of business processes is crucial for organizations to be effective, efficient and flexible. To meet fast-changing market conditions, dynamic outsourcing is required, in which business relationships are established and enacted on-the-fly in an adaptive, fine-grained way unrestricted by geographic distance. This requires automated means for both the establishment of outsourcing relationships and for the enactment of services performed in these relationships over electronic channels. Due to wide industry support and the underlying model of loose coupling of services, Web services increasingly become the mechanism of choice to connect organizations across organizational boundaries. This paper analyzes to which extent Web services support the dynamic process outsourcing paradigm. We discuss contract -based dynamic business process outsourcing to define requirements and then introduce the Web services framework. Based on this, we investigate the match between the two. We observe that the Web services framework requires further support for cross - organizational business processes and mechanisms for contracting, QoS management and process-based transaction support and suggest ways to fill those gaps

    It may surprise most people to read in the official Church Manual of Christian Science these words, “If a Christian Scientist is to be married, the ceremony shall be performed by a clergyman who is legally authorized. Why does the Christian Science Church itself provide no marriage ceremony for its members, but insists that if they desire that estate they must be married by some authorized clergyman of another Church? Only through a study of Mrs. Eddy\u27s teaching on marriage can the answer be found. But a study or Mrs. Eddy\u27s teaching of marriage necessitates also an examination of her whole philosophy, for her marriage teachings are consistent with her basic principles. Therefore, the next chapter of this paper is devoted to a discussion of the basic principles of Christian Science. After a discussion of her basic philosophy, Chapter III deals soley with an objective study of Mrs. Eddy\u27s teaching on marriage. After the objective study of Mrs. Eddy\u27s marriage doctrine, Chapter IV analyses this doctrine in the light of Scripture, reason, and experience, and tries to show the horrible results of this doctrine, if Christian Science practice is consistent with Mrs. Eddy\u27s teaching

    Modeling IoT-aware Business Processes - A State of the Art Report

    This research report presents an analysis of the state of the art of modeling Internet of Things (IoT)-aware business processes. IOT links the physical world to the digital world. Traditionally, we would find information about events and processes in the physical world in the digital world entered by humans and humans using this information to control the physical world. In the IoT paradigm, the physical world is equipped with sensors and actuators to create a direct link with the digital world. Business processes are used to coordinate a complex environment including multiple actors for a common goal, typically in the context of administrative work. In the past few years, we have seen research efforts on the possibilities to model IoT- aware business processes, extending process coordination to real world entities directly. This set of research efforts is relatively small when compared to the overall research effort into the IoT and much of the work is still in the early research stage. To create a basis for a bridge between IoT and BPM, the goal of this report is to collect and analyze the state of the art of existing frameworks for modeling IoT-aware business processes.Comment: 42 page

    Space-Varying Coefficient Models for Brain Imaging

    The methodological development and the application in this paper originate from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a powerful nuclear magnetic resonance technique enabling diagnosis and monitoring of several diseases as well as reconstruction of neural pathways. We reformulate the current analysis framework of separate voxelwise regressions as a 3d space-varying coefficient model (VCM) for the entire set of DTI images recorded on a 3d grid of voxels. Hence by allowing to borrow strength from spatially adjacent voxels, to smooth noisy observations, and to estimate diffusion tensors at any location within the brain, the three-step cascade of standard data processing is overcome simultaneously. We conceptualize two VCM variants based on B-spline basis functions: a full tensor product approach and a sequential approximation, rendering the VCM numerically and computationally feasible even for the huge dimension of the joint model in a realistic setup. A simulation study shows that both approaches outperform the standard method of voxelwise regressions with subsequent regularization. Due to major efficacy, we apply the sequential method to a clinical DTI data set and demonstrate the inherent ability of increasing the rigid grid resolution by evaluating the incorporated basis functions at intermediate points. In conclusion, the suggested fitting methods clearly improve the current state-of-the-art, but ameloriation of local adaptivity remains desirable

    Defining Higher Education Writing Centers from the Perspectives of Writing Center Directors

    The purpose of this study was to discover what defines a writing center by interviewing directors of writing centers in the Southern Appalachian area. This qualitative study was based on a single round of recorded telephone interviews with 13 writing center directors who meet the criteria for inclusion in the study. Many researchers have written about writing centers, their efficacy, and what defines them; yet, no clear consensus exists. Without a clear definition there is no means of determining the efficacy of writing centers. As a result of the interviews with the writing center directors three critical components of writing centers emerged. They were tutors, space, and leadership; these are the three major elements that define and shape a writing center. A writing center must have well-trained and knowledgeable tutors; a space, either physical, virtual or both, as a base of operation; and a director that provides leadership

    The influence of information technology in medicine has been constantly rising and represents a central part in many medical disciplines, especially radio-oncology. For the proper delivery of radiation treatment, the correct position of the patient is essential. To verify the correct position of the patient radiological images are made. In order to compare positions, contours of structures (often bones) may be used, these need to be identified and painted. The software that was provided with the linear accelerator contains a bitmap paint program, where these structures are painted manually. This manual painting of structures could be replaced by automated algorithms. However, amendments, innovations or customization of the original software are costly and difficult to achieve due to copyright, license and certification issues. The concept described here aims to get around these issues by creating an automated algorithm on the user level, with no interference of the underlying original software. This system uses the Java platform; with the help of the Java Robot class user input can be simulated. The developed tool proved to be time-saving, functional and the development could easily be accomplished and individually tailored to users needs

    Mechanisms of Volatile Anesthetic-Induced Myocardial Protection

    Volatile anesthetics protect myocardium against reversible and irreversible ischemic injury. Experimental evidence from several in vitro and in vivo animal models demonstrates that volatile agents enhance the recovery of stunned myocardium and reduce the size of myocardial infarction after brief or prolonged coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion, respectively. This protective effect persists after the anesthetic has been discontinued, a phenomenon known as anesthetic-induced preconditioning (APC). Recent clinical data also demonstrates evidence of APC in patients during cardiac surgery. Thus, administration of volatile anesthetics may represent a novel therapeutic approach that reduces morbidity and mortality associated with perioperative myocardial ischemia and infarction. The mechanisms responsible for APC appear to be similar to those implicated in ischemic preconditioning, but nonetheless have subtle differences. Accumulating evidence indicates that APC is characterized by complex signal transduction pathways that may include adenosine receptors, G proteins, protein kinase C, reactive oxygen species, and sarcolemmal or mitochondrial KATP channels.     Dynamic graph-based search in unknown environments

    A novel graph-based approach to search in unknown environments is presented. A virtual geometric structure is imposed on the environment represented in computer memory by a graph. Algorithms use this representation to coordinate a team of robots (or entities). Local discovery of environmental features cause dynamic expansion of the graph resulting in global exploration of the unknown environment. The algorithm is shown to have O(k.nH) time complexity, where nH is the number of vertices of the discovered environment and 1 <= k <= nH. A maximum bound on the length of the resulting walk is given
