    On Algorithms Based on Joint Estimation of Currents and Contrast in Microwave Tomography

    This paper deals with improvements to the contrast source inversion method which is widely used in microwave tomography. First, the method is reviewed and weaknesses of both the criterion form and the optimization strategy are underlined. Then, two new algorithms are proposed. Both of them are based on the same criterion, similar but more robust than the one used in contrast source inversion. The first technique keeps the main characteristics of the contrast source inversion optimization scheme but is based on a better exploitation of the conjugate gradient algorithm. The second technique is based on a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm and performs simultaneous updates of sets of unknowns that are normally processed sequentially. Both techniques are shown to be more efficient than original contrast source inversion.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 5 table

    Product management and performance appraisal systems in the Canadian pharmaceutical industry

    This thesis first examines existing research on product management and performance appraisal systems, presenting methods of aligning the two systems so they work congruently toward improving overall organizational performance. Following is an examination of these systems as they currently exist in the Canadian pharmaceutical industry. The analysis of these two systems as they appear in this highly volatile marketplace lead the author to speculate that they may not be sufficiently aligned, and therefore may not be working congruently toward attaining the goals of the organization. A number of issues are presented that lead the author to question the effectiveness of existing performance appraisal systems. One such issue is significant ambiguity between product manager and supervisor perceptions of the functions and objectives used to evaluate the product manager's performance. Ultimately, this ambiguity may indicate that product managers are not performing the tasks that their supervisors and their organizations believe they should be performing to be successful in their roles

    Study of microwave tomography measurement setup configurations for breast cancer detection based on breast compression

    Microwave tomography (MT) measurement setups for different configurations based on breast compression are compared to classical circular measurement setups. Configurations based on compression allow measuring the evanescent component of the scattered field and lead to a compact measurement setup that allows direct image comparison with a standard mammography system. The different configurations are compared based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the radiation operator for a 2D TM case. This analysis allows determining under which conditions the image quality obtained from the reconstructions can be enhanced. These findings are confirmed by a series of reconstructions of breast phantoms based on synthetic data obtained at a single frequency of operation

    Prospective association between pro-inflammatory state on admission and posttraumatic stress following acute coronary syndrome

    Objective: The traumatic experience of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) may induce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We examined whether the ACS-triggered acute inflammatory response predicts the development of PTSD symptoms. Method: Study participants were 70 patients (all Caucasian, 80% male, mean age 59 years) with myocardial infarction (MI) during the acute treatment phase. Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-4, IL- 10, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-1β were determined in plasma collected within 48 h of hospital admission. Participants self-assessed the severity of ACS-induced PTSD symptoms with the 17-item Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale at 12 months. Results: There was a significant positive association of the pro-inflammatory index (added standardized z-scores of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) with total PTSD symptom severity (ΔR2 = 0.050, p = .029) and re-experiencing symptoms (ΔR2 = 0.088, p = .008), but not avoidance/numbing and hyperarousal symp-toms. Analyses were adjusted for the anti-inflammatory index (added standardized z-scores of IL-4, IL-10, and TGF-β1), trauma-focused counseling, sex, age, time since pain onset, troponin, body mass index, and distress during MI. Results were robust when the anti-inflammatory index was removed from the model. Additional analyses showed significant associations of both the net-inflammatory index (i.e., pro-inflammatory index minus anti-inflammatory index) and IL-1β with total PTSD symptom severity, re-experiencing, and hyperarousal symptoms (ΔR2 between 0.042 and 0.090) and of IL-1β with avoidance/numbing symptoms (ΔR2 = 0.050). Conclusions: The findings suggest an association between the pro-inflammatory state launched during ACS and the development of PTSD symptoms. Increased IL-1β may play a particular role in the pathophysiology of ACS- induced PTSD symptoms

    An Analysis of the Legal, Social, and Political Issues Raised by Asbestos Litigation

    This Special Project examines the most important issues of the asbestos problem and advocates a congressional solution (1) to relieve the courts of the thousands of present and potential asbestos cases, (2) to protect future claimants\u27 rights to adequate compensation, and (3) to provide for equitable participation by all responsible parties, which, in addition to asbestos manufacturers,include the federal government, insurance companies, and the tobacco industry. The first six parts of the Special Project examine the various issues of asbestos litigation: theories of liability in products liability suits against asbestos manufacturers, causation,defenses, statutory limitations on actions, collateral estoppel, and punitive damages. The Special Project then discusses in parts VIII,IX, and X the methods used by asbestos manufacturers to attempt to spread their liability through asserting insurer liability, the exclusive remedy of workers\u27 compensation, and indemnity and contribution from the United States. Finally, the Special Project evaluates and analyzes recent developments in the asbestos litigation area, including proposals for federal legislative compensation programs and business alternatives available to asbestos manufacturers facing enormous asbestos-related liabilities... This Special Project critically has examined the most important issues concerning the asbestos problem. It has considered the complex legal, legislative, and social questions that society must confront in order to resolve this predicament. Only swift action by Congress in the form of a fair and comprehensive compensation scheme for victims of asbestos-related disabilities will initiate a solution to this difficult and pervasive problem

    Incorporating phylogenetic uncertainty on phylogeny-based palaeontological dating and the timing of turtle diversification

    Methods improving the performance of molecular dating of divergence time of clades have improved dramatically in recent years. The calibration of molecular dating using the first appearance of a clade in the fossil record is a crucial step towards inferring the minimal diversification time of various groups and the choice of extinct taxa can strongly influence the molecular dates. Here, we evaluate the uncertainty on the phylogenetic position of extinct taxa through non-parametric bootstrapping. The recognition of phylogenetic uncertainty resulted in the definition of the Bootstrap Uncertainty Range (BUR) for the age of first appearance of a given clade. The BUR is calculated as the interval of geological time in which the diversification of a given clade can be inferred to have occurred, based on the temporal information of the fossil record and the topologies of the bootstrap trees. Divergence times based on BUR analyses were calculated for three clades of turtles: Testudines, Pleurodira and Cryptodira.     A large scale hearing loss screen reveals an extensive unexplored genetic landscape for auditory dysfunction

    The developmental and physiological complexity of the auditory system is likely reflected in the underlying set of genes involved in auditory function. In humans, over 150 non-syndromic loci have been identified, and there are more than 400 human genetic syndromes with a hearing loss component. Over 100 non-syndromic hearing loss genes have been identified in mouse and human, but we remain ignorant of the full extent of the genetic landscape involved in auditory dysfunction. As part of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium, we undertook a hearing loss screen in a cohort of 3006 mouse knockout strains. In total, we identify 67 candidate hearing loss genes. We detect known hearing loss genes, but the vast majority, 52, of the candidate genes were novel. Our analysis reveals a large and unexplored genetic landscape involved with auditory function
