    The design thinking approaches of three different groups of designers based on self-reports

    This paper compares the design thinking approaches of three groups of student-designers: industrial design and architecture undergraduates, and design PhD candidates. Participants responded to an open-ended design brief, working individually. Upon submission of their designs they were debriefed about their design processes. We compare the groups based on their submissions and self-reported design activities, especially the sequence of their design activities and the time allotted to them. There were some commonalities and differences between the two undergraduate groups but the main differences were between the two undergraduates and the PhD students. On the basis of the findings we pose questions regarding design methods in the era of 'design thinking' wherein designers are required to adopt an entrepreneurial frame of mind

    Aureobacterium resistens sp. nov., exhibiting vancomycin resistance and teicoplanin susceptibility

    Two similar strains of a coryneform bacterium were isolated from human clinical material. Both strains were resistant to vancomycin but susceptible to teicoplanin. Detailed biochemical, chemotaxonomical, and molecular genetic investigations revealed that both isolates were members of a hitherto undescribed species of the genus Aureobacterium. The name Aureobacterium resistens sp. nov. is proposed for the new bacterium and the type strain is CCUG 3831

    NMR evidence for inhomogeneous glassy behavior driven by nematic fluctuations in iron arsenide superconductors

    We present 75^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rate data in Ba(Fe1βˆ’x_{1-x}Cox_x)2_2As2_2 and Ba(Fe1βˆ’x_{1-x}Cux_x)2_2As2_2 as a function of temperature, doping and magnetic field. The relaxation curves exhibit a broad distribution of relaxation rates, consistent with inhomogeneous glassy behavior up to 100 K. The doping and temperature response of the width of the dynamical heterogeneity is similar to that of the nematic susceptibility measured by elastoresistance measurements. We argue that quenched random fields which couple to the nematic order give rise to a nematic glass that is reflected in the spin dynamics.Comment: Accepted to Physical Review

    Neutral Evolution as Diffusion in phenotype space: reproduction with mutation but without selection

    The process of `Evolutionary Diffusion', i.e. reproduction with local mutation but without selection in a biological population, resembles standard Diffusion in many ways. However, Evolutionary Diffusion allows the formation of local peaks with a characteristic width that undergo drift, even in the infinite population limit. We analytically calculate the mean peak width and the effective random walk step size, and obtain the distribution of the peak width which has a power law tail.     On the rho invariant for manifolds with boundary

    This article is a follow up of the previous article of the authors on the analytic surgery of eta- and rho-invariants. We investigate in detail the (Atiyah-Patodi-Singer)-rho-invariant for manifolds with boundary. First we generalize the cut-and-paste formula to arbitrary boundary conditions. A priori the rho-invariant is an invariant of the Riemannian structure and a representation of the fundamental group. We show, however, that the dependence on the metric is only very mild: it is independent of the metric in the interior and the dependence on the metric on the boundary is only up to its pseudo--isotopy class. Furthermore, we show that this cannot be improved: we give explicit examples and a theoretical argument that different metrics on the boundary in general give rise to different rho-invariants. Theoretically, this follows from an interpretation of the exponentiated rho-invariant as a covariantly constant section of a determinant bundle over a certain moduli space of flat connections and Riemannian metrics on the boundary.     Synthesis of 2,6-trans- and 3,3,6-Trisubstituted Tetrahydropyran-4-ones from Maitland-Japp Derived 2H-Dihydropyran-4-ones: A Total Synthesis of Diospongin B

    6-Substituted-2H-dihydropyran-4-one products of the Maitland-Japp reaction have been converted into tetrahydropyrans containing uncommon substitution patterns. Treatment of 6-substituted-2H-dihydropyran-4-ones with carbon nucleophiles led to the formation of tetrahydropyran rings with the 2,6-trans-stereochemical arrangement. Reaction of the same 6-substituted-2H-dihydropyran-4-ones with l-Selectride led to the formation of 3,6-disubstituted tetrahydropyran rings, while trapping of the intermediate enolate with carbon electrophiles in turn led to the formation 3,3,6-trisubstituted tetrahydropyran rings. The relative stereochemical configuration of the new substituents was controlled by the stereoelectronic preference for pseudo-axial addition of the nucleophile and trapping of the enolate from the opposite face. Application of these methods led to a synthesis of the potent anti-osteoporotic diarylheptanoid natural product diospongin B

    A Novel Persistence Associated EBV miRNA Expression Profile Is Disrupted in Neoplasia

    We have performed the first extensive profiling of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) miRNAs on in vivo derived normal and neoplastic infected tissues. We describe a unique pattern of viral miRNA expression by normal infected cells in vivo expressing restricted viral latency programs (germinal center: Latency II and memory B: Latency I/0). This includes the complete absence of 15 of the 34 miRNAs profiled. These consist of 12 BART miRNAs (including approximately half of Cluster 2) and 3 of the 4 BHRF1 miRNAs. All but 2 of these absent miRNAs become expressed during EBV driven growth (Latency III). Furthermore, EBV driven growth is accompanied by a 5–10 fold down regulation in the level of the BART miRNAs expressed in germinal center and memory B cells. Therefore, Latency III also expresses a unique pattern of viral miRNAs. We refer to the miRNAs that are specifically expressed in EBV driven growth as the Latency III associated miRNAs. In EBV associated tumors that employ Latency I or II (Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and gastric carcinoma), the Latency III associated BART but not BHRF1 miRNAs are up regulated. Thus BART miRNA expression is deregulated in the EBV associated tumors. This is the first demonstration that Latency III specific genes (the Latency III associated BARTs) can be expressed in these tumors. The EBV associated tumors demonstrate very similar patterns of miRNA expression yet were readily distinguished when the expression data were analyzed either by heat-map/clustering or principal component analysis. Systematic analysis revealed that the information distinguishing the tumor types was redundant and distributed across all the miRNAs. This resembles β€œsecret sharing” algorithms where information can be distributed among a large number of recipients in such a way that any combination of a small number of recipients is able to understand the message. Biologically, this may be a consequence of functional redundancy between the miRNAs

    Current air quality standards for particulate matter (PM) use the PM mass concentration [PM with aerodynamic diameters ≀ 10 ΞΌm (PM(10)) or ≀ 2.5 ΞΌm (PM(2.5))] as a metric. It has been suggested that particles from combustion sources are more relevant to human health than are particles from other sources, but the impact of policies directed at reducing PM from combustion processes is usually relatively small when effects are estimated for a reduction in the total mass concentration

    Most Corynebacterium xerosis Strains Identified in the Routine Clinical Laboratory Correspond to Corynebacterium amycolatum

    A comprehensive study was performed on 25 bacterial clinical isolates originally identified as Corynebacterium xerosis. Three reference strains of C. xerosis were also included in the study. On the basis of a variety of phenotypic characteristics tested, all strains could be divided into two separate clusters: reference strains ATCC 373 (the type strain of C. xerosis) and ATCC 7711 showed yellow-pigmented, dry, rough colonies, fermented 5-keto-gluconate, exhibited strong leucine arylamidase and alpha-glucosidase activities, produced lactate as the major end product of glucose metabolism, were susceptible to most of the 19 antimicrobial agents tested, and showed an inhibition zone around disks containing the vibriocidal compound O/129. In contrast, the remaining 26 strains including reference strain NCTC 7243 as well as all clinical isolates formed white-grayish, dry, slightly rough colonies, did not ferment 5-keto-gluconate, exhibited only weak leucine arylamidase and no alpha-glucosidase activity, produced large amounts of propionic acid as the end product of glucose metabolism, and were resistant to most antimicrobial agents tested, including O/129. Chemotaxonomic (cellular fatty acids, mycolic acids, and G+C content) and molecular genetic (16S rRNA gene sequence) investigations revealed that the strains of the second cluster unambiguously belonged to the species C. amycolatum.
