Coping Among Breast Cancer Survivors: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Brief COPE
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
Cancer survivors continue to cope with significant stressors after completing treatment. The Brief COPE (Carver, 1997) is frequently used to measure coping; however, its factor structure remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the best factor conceptualization of the Brief COPE for use among breast cancer survivors.
METHODS:
Breast cancer survivors (N = 1,127) completed the Brief COPE. We conducted confirmatory factor analyses comparing several a priori models based on research in cancer-relevant populations.
RESULTS:
Of the eight models examined, the 14-factor model of the Brief COPE showed the best fit.
CONCLUSIONS:
Despite efforts to simplify the structure of the Brief COPE, our results suggest coping among breast cancer survivors is best assessed using Carver's (1997) original 14-factor conceptualization
Hydrodynamic bubble coarsening in off-critical vapour-liquid phase separation
Late-stage coarsening in off-critical vapour-liquid phase separation is
re-examined. In the limit of bubbles of vapour distributed throughout a
continuous liquid phase, it is argued that coarsening proceeds via inertial
hydrodynamic bubble collapse. This replaces the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner
mechanism seen in binary liquid mixtures. The arguments are strongly supported
by simulations in two dimensions using a novel single-component soft sphere

Oceanic drivers of juvenile sea turtle strandings in the UK
Juvenile sea turtles can disperse thousands of kilometers from nesting beaches to oceanic development habitats, aided by ocean currents. In the North Atlantic, turtles dispersing from American beaches risk being advected out of warm nursery grounds in the North Atlantic Gyre into lethally cold Northern European waters (e.g. around the United Kingdom). We used an ocean model simulation to compare simulated numbers of turtles that were advected to cold waters around the UK with observed numbers of turtles reported in the same area over ~5 decades. Rates of virtual turtles predicted to encounter lethal temperatures (≤10 and 15°C, mean 19% ± 2.7) and reach the UK were consistently low (median 0.83%, lower quartile 0.67%, upper quartile 1.02%), whereas there was high inter-annual variability in the numbers of dead or critically ill turtles reported in the UK. Generalized additive models suggest inter-annual variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index to be a good indicator of annual numbers of turtle strandings reported in the UK. We demonstrate that NAO variability drives variability in the dispersion scenarios of juvenile turtles from key nesting regions into the North Atlantic. Coastal effects, such as the number of storms and mean sea surface temperatures in the UK were significant but weak predictors, with a weak effect on turtle strandings. Further understanding how changing environmental conditions such as NAO variability and storms affect the fate of juvenile turtles is vital for understanding the distribution and population dynamics of sea turtles
Spatial particulate fields during highwinds in the imperial valley, California
We examined windblown dust within the Imperial Valley (CA) during strong springtime west-southwesterly (WSW) wind events. Analysis of routine agency meteorological and ambient particulate matter (PM) measurements identified 165 high WSW wind events between March and June 2013 to 2019. The PM concentrations over these days are higher at northern valley monitoring sites, with daily PM mass concentration of particles less than 10 micrometers aerodynamic diameter (PM10) at these sites commonly greater than 100 μg/m3 and reaching around 400 μg/m3, and daily PM mass concentration of particles less than 2.5 micrometers aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) commonly greater than 20 μg/m3 and reaching around 60 μg/m3. A detailed analysis utilizing 1 km resolution multi-angle implementation of atmospheric correction (MAIAC) aerosol optical depth (AOD), Identifying Violations Affecting Neighborhoods (IVAN) low-cost PM2.5 measurements and 500 m resolution sediment supply fields alongside routine ground PM observations identified an area of high AOD/PM during WSW events spanning the northwestern valley encompassing the Brawley/Westmorland through the Niland area. This area shows up most clearly once the average PM10 at northern valley routine sites during WSW events exceeds 100 μg/m3. The area is consistent with high soil sediment supply in the northwestern valley and upwind desert, suggesting local sources are primarily responsible. On the basis of this study, MAIAC AOD appears able to identify localized high PM areas during windblown dust events provided the PM levels are high enough. The use of the IVAN data in this study illustrates how a citizen science effort to collect more spatially refined air quality concentration data can help pinpoint episodic pollution patterns and possible sources important for PM exposure and adverse health effects
Randomized controlled trial of a web-based computer-tailored smoking cessation program as a supplement to nicotine patch therapy
Aim  To assess the efficacy of World Wide Web-based tailored behavioral smoking cessation materials among nicotine patch users. Design  Two-group randomized controlled trial. Setting  World Wide Web in England and Republic of Ireland. Participants  A total of 3971 subjects who purchased a particular brand of nicotine patch and logged-on to use a free web-based behavioral support program. Intervention  Web-based tailored behavioral smoking cessation materials or web-based non-tailored materials. Measurements  Twenty-eight-day continuous abstinence rates were assessed by internet-based survey at 6-week follow-up and 10-week continuous rates at 12-week follow-up. Findings  Using three approaches to the analyses of 6- and 12-week outcomes, participants in the tailored condition reported clinically and statistically significantly higher continuous abstinence rates than participants in the non-tailored condition. In our primary analyses using as a denominator all subjects who logged-on to the treatment site at least once, continuous abstinence rates at 6 weeks were 29.0% in the tailored condition versus 23.9% in the non-tailored condition (OR = 1.30; P  = 0.0006); at 12 weeks continuous abstinence rates were 22.8% versus 18.1%, respectively (OR = 1.34; P  = 0.0006). Moreover, satisfaction with the program was significantly higher in the tailored than in the non-tailored condition. Conclusions  The results of this study demonstrate a benefit of the web-based tailored behavioral support materials used in conjunction with nicotine replacement therapy. A web-based program that collects relevant information from users and tailors the intervention to their specific needs had significant advantages over a web-based non-tailored cessation program.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72486/1/j.1360-0443.2005.01093.x.pd
Epigenetic and Genetic Influences on DNA Methylation Variation in Maize Populations
DNA methylation is a chromatin modification that is frequently associated with epigenetic regulation in plants and mammals. However, genetic changes such as transposon insertions can also lead to changes in DNA methylation. Genome-wide profiles of DNA methylation for 20 maize (Zea mays) inbred lines were used to discover differentially methylated regions (DMRs). The methylation level for each of these DMRs was also assayed in 31 additional maize or teosinte genotypes, resulting in the discovery of 1966 common DMRs and 1754 rare DMRs. Analysis of recombinant inbred lines provides evidence that the majority of DMRs are heritable. A local association scan found that nearly half of the DMRs with common variation are significantly associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms found within or near the DMR. Many of the DMRs that are significantly associated with local genetic variation are found near transposable elements that may contribute to the variation in DNA methylation. Analysis of gene expression in the same samples used for DNA methylation profiling identified over 300 genes with expression patterns that are significantly associated with DNA methylation variation. Collectively, our results suggest that DNA methylation variation is influenced by genetic and epigenetic changes that are often stably inherited and can influence the expression of nearby genes
Dual-barrel conductance micropipet as a new approach to the study of ionic crystal dissolution kinetics
A new approach to the study of ionic crystal dissolution kinetics is described, based on the use of a dual-barrel theta conductance micropipet. The solution in the pipet is undersaturated with respect to the crystal of interest, and when the meniscus at the end of the micropipet makes contact with a selected region of the crystal surface, dissolution occurs causing the solution composition to change. This is observed, with better than 1 ms time resolution, as a change in the ion conductance current, measured across a potential bias between an electrode in each barrel of the pipet. Key attributes of this new technique are: (i) dissolution can be targeted at a single crystal surface; (ii) multiple measurements can be made quickly and easily by moving the pipet to a new location on the surface; (iii) materials with a wide range of kinetics and solubilities are open to study because the duration of dissolution is controlled by the meniscus contact time; (iv) fast kinetics are readily amenable to study because of the intrinsically high mass transport rates within tapered micropipets; (v) the experimental geometry is well-defined, permitting finite element method modeling to allow quantitative analysis of experimental data. Herein, we study the dissolution of NaCl as an example system, with dissolution induced for just a few milliseconds, and estimate a first-order heterogeneous rate constant of 7.5 (±2.5) × 10–5 cm s–1 (equivalent surface dissolution flux ca. 0.5 μmol cm–2 s–1 into a completely undersaturated solution). Ionic crystals form a huge class of materials whose dissolution properties are of considerable interest, and we thus anticipate that this new localized microscale surface approach will have considerable applicability in the future
Why stop at two opinions? Reply to McCrae (2020)
McCrae (2020) argues that it is premature to explore interventions focused on personality change. In his commentary, he suggests that interventions should be promoted only if their effects in self-report data are confirmed by the additional opinion of informants. We agree with the essence of his position and would go further by envisioning a new framework for rigorous collaborative research on personality change (Bleidorn et al., 2020). Localized helium excitations in 4He_N-benzene clusters
We compute ground and excited state properties of small helium clusters 4He_N
containing a single benzene impurity molecule. Ground-state structures and
energies are obtained for N=1,2,3,14 from importance-sampled, rigid-body
diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC). Excited state energies due to helium vibrational
motion near the molecule surface are evaluated using the projection operator,
imaginary time spectral evolution (POITSE) method. We find excitation energies
of up to ~23 K above the ground state. These states all possess vibrational
character of helium atoms in a highly anisotropic potential due to the aromatic
molecule, and can be categorized in terms of localized and collective
vibrational modes. These results appear to provide precursors for a transition
from localized to collective helium excitations at molecular nanosubstrates of
increasing size. We discuss the implications of these results for analysis of
anomalous spectral features in recent spectroscopic studies of large aromatic
