An Integrated Approach for Evaluating Students' Achievement of Clinical Objectives
During the clinical phase of undergraduate medical education (UME) students are often geographically dispersed and assigned to preceptors throughout the community. Monitoring, documenting, and evaluating their clinical experiences and achievement of clinical objectives in this venue becomes a challenge, especially for large UME programs. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss a method for developing and implementing a school-wide evaluation system for the clinical phase of UME. This type of evaluation system links students' clinical experiential data with the objectives of a clerkship, using technological advances, such as the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Internet, and intranet. Clerkship directors are provided real-time reports on student's progress toward achieving clerkship objectives and are able to monitor the clinical activities of the clerkship. Students on the other hand, will be empowered to take more control of their educational experiences by monitoring their own progress
Zeeman Slowers for Strontium based on Permanent Magnets
We present the design, construction, and characterisation of longitudinal-
and transverse-field Zeeman slowers, based on arrays of permanent magnets, for
slowing thermal beams of atomic Sr. The slowers are optimised for operation
with deceleration related to the local laser intensity (by the parameter
), which uses more effectively the available laser power, in contrast
to the usual constant deceleration mode. Slowing efficiencies of up to
are realised and compared to those predicted by modelling.
We highlight the transverse-field slower, which is compact, highly tunable,
light-weight, and requires no electrical power, as a simple solution to slowing
Sr, well-suited to spaceborne application. For Sr we achieve a slow-atom
flux of around atomss at ms, loading
approximately atoms in to a magneto-optical-trap (MOT), and
capture all isotopes in approximate relative natural abundances
Power Relations and Social Mix in Metropolitan Neighbourhoods in North America and Europe: Moving Beyond Gentrification?
Research on spatial segregation has suggested that social mix may be a temporary phase in class displacement, where relations between different groups are at best divided or ‘tectonic’, for instance in England. Political and policy discourses, by contrast, tend to uncritically valorize social mix as a means to breaking up concentrations of poverty and providing neighbourhoods with a middle-class voice. In the literature, little attention has been paid to power dynamics in socially mixed neighbourhoods and the implications this may have for understanding theory and policy. The five articles that make up this symposium address the ways in which social and ethnic groups interact in major cities in Europe and North America and, as the title suggests, this involves taking into account power relations, domination and negotiation between the different groups. There is a need to connect the experience of the deployment of power within neighbourhoods (and between them) with the discussions of power mechanisms at work in wider urban processes
A low maintenance Sr optical lattice clock
We describe the Sr optical lattice clock apparatus at NPL with particular
emphasis on techniques used to increase reliability and minimise the human
requirement in its operation. Central to this is a clock-referenced transfer
cavity scheme for the stabilisation of cooling and trapping lasers. We
highlight several measures to increase the reliability of the clock with a view
towards the realisation of an optical time-scale. The clock contributed 502
hours of data over a 25 day period (84% uptime) in a recent measurement
campaign with several uninterrupted periods of more than 48 hours. An

Direct Evidence for Termination of Obscured Star Formation by Radiatively Driven Outflows in Reddened QSOs
We present optical to far-infrared photometry of 31 reddened QSOs that show
evidence for radiatively driven outflows originating from AGN in their
rest-frame UV spectra. We use these data to study the relationships between the
AGN-driven outflows, and the AGN and starburst infrared luminosities. We find
that FeLoBAL QSOs are invariably IR-luminous, with IR luminosities exceeding
10^{12} Solar luminosities in all cases. The AGN supplies 76% of the total IR
emission, on average, but with a range from 20% to 100%. We find no evidence
that the absolute luminosity of obscured star formation is affected by the
AGN-driven outflows. Conversely, we find an anticorrelation between the
strength of AGN-driven outflows, as measured from the range of outflow
velocities over which absorption exceeds a minimal threshold, and the
contribution from star formation to the total IR luminosity, with a much higher
chance of seeing a starburst contribution in excess of 25% in systems with weak
outflows than in systems with strong outflows. Moreover, we find no convincing
evidence that this effect is driven by the IR luminosity of the AGN. We
conclude that radiatively driven outflows from AGN can have a dramatic,
negative impact on luminous star formation in their host galaxies. We find that
such outflows act to curtail star formation such that star formation
contributes less than ~25% of the total IR luminosity. We also propose that the
degree to which termination of star formation takes place is not deducible from
the IR luminosity of the AGN.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Sexual orientation differences in the self-esteem of men and women:A systematic review and meta-analysis
Sexual minority individuals experience higher rates of mental health problems than heterosexual people. It has been suggested that minority stress explains this disparity, partly by elevating rates of general psychological risk factors such as low self-esteem. This study investigated self-esteem in sexual minority people compared with heterosexual people through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A systematic search of four databases was conducted. Observational studies comparing self-esteem in sexual minority and heterosexual men and women separately were included. A qualitative synthesis and random effects meta-analysis were conducted. Potential moderators were explored using subgroup analyses of age, sexual minority orientation, and sample type. Thirty-two eligible studies were identified; 25 compared self-esteem in men and 19 in women. Most studies used the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) to measure self-esteem. Compared with heterosexual men and women, there was significantly lower self-esteem in sexual minority men (SMD = -0.33, 95% CI [-0.44, -0.23]) and women (SMD = -0.20, 95% CI [-0.29, -0.11]). This difference appeared to be moderated by sample type: There was preliminary evidence for more robust differences in men and bisexual individuals. Findings are consistent with the suggestion that self-esteem is lower in sexual minorities than in heterosexual individuals. However, caution is required in drawing firm conclusions due to methodological limitations of the included studies. Self-esteem is a potential target for intervention to prevent psychological disorders in this population.</p
The IntAct molecular interaction database in 2012
IntAct is an open-source, open data molecular interaction database populated by data either curated from the literature or from direct data depositions. Two levels of curation are now available within the database, with both IMEx-level annotation and less detailed MIMIx-compatible entries currently supported. As from September 2011, IntAct contains approximately 275 000 curated binary interaction evidences from over 5000 publications. The IntAct website has been improved to enhance the search process and in particular the graphical display of the results. New data download formats are also available, which will facilitate the inclusion of IntAct's data in the Semantic Web. IntAct is an active contributor to the IMEx consortium (http://www.imexconsortium.org). IntAct source code and data are freely available at http://www.ebi.ac.uk/intac
Expanding the search for galaxies at z ~7-10 with new NICMOS Parallel Fields
We have carried out a search for galaxies at z ~ 7-10 in ~14.4 sq. arcmin of
new NICMOS parallel imaging taken in the Great Observatories Origins Deep
Survey (GOODS, 5.9 sq. arcmin), the Cosmic Origins Survey (COSMOS, 7.2 sq.
arcmin), and SSA22 (1.3 sq. arcmin). These images reach 5 sigma sensitivities
of J110 = 26.0-27.5 (AB), and combined they increase the amount of deep
near-infrared data by more than 60% in fields where the investment in deep
optical data has already been made. We find no z>7 candidates in our survey
area, consistent with the Bouwens et al. (2008) measurements at z~7 and 9 (over
23 sq. arcmin), which predict 0.7 galaxies at z~7 and <0.03 galaxies at z~9. We
estimate that 10-20% of z>7 galaxies are missed by this survey, due to
incompleteness from foreground contamination by faint sources. For the case of
luminosity evolution, assuming a Schecter parameterization with a typical phi*
= 10^-3 Mpc^-3, we find M* > -20.0 for z~7 and M* > -20.7 for z~9 (68%
confidence). This suggests that the downward luminosity evolution of LBGs
continues to z~7, although our result is marginally consistent with the z~6 LF
of Bouwens et al.(2006, 2007). In addition we present newly-acquired deep
MMT/Megacam imaging of the z~9 candidate JD2325+1433, first presented in Henry
et al. (2008). The resulting weak but significant detection at i' indicates
