BBS/BBF ENCAPSULATED MICROORGANISMS TECHNOLOGY FOR SOLID INOCULATION, THE NEXT STEP TO NOT USE WATER IN BIOLEACHING PROCESSES WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE
Industrial hydrometallurgical processes using copper oxides and mixed oxide/sulfide exhibit
high concentrations of several ions in their raffinates that hinder the treatment of copper ores with
microorganisms because they are strongly affected by ionic impurities. On the other hand, water
costs and hydric balance of processes in some mining sites, especially in desert areas, make it
impossible to use fresh water for the dilution of toxic solutions and compatibility of the microbial
activity in the bioleaching process. A strategy to address this in bioleaching applications has not
been solved with an economical sustainable way
Population dynamics of phyllocnistis citrella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) and its parasitoids in Tafí Viejo, Tucumán, Argentina
Seasonal abundance of the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was investigated between Nov 1999 and Apr 2003 in Tafí Viejo (Tucuman province). Phyllocnistis citrella populations increased during spring and summer, declined during fall, and disappeared in the winter. Five species of parasitoids, one exotic and four indigenous, attacked citrus leafminer immature stages in commercial and experimental lemon orchards. Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was the most abundant parasitoid. Cirrospilus neotropicus Diez & Fidalgo (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was the most abundant indigenous species, followed by Galeopsomyia fausta LaSalle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). The other indigenous species were not common and were only occasionally collected from citrus leafminer larvae. Parasitoids and P. citrella exhibited similar population fluctuations throughout the entire sampling period. A certain degree of synchrony exists between the most abundant parasitoids (A. citricola, C. neotropicus, and G. fausta) and the pest. The highest rates of parasitism were observed in the fall. Ageniaspis citricola exhibited approximately 29.5% parasitism, whereas all the native species together were only 8.2%. Data showed that a clear dependence existed between percentages of parasitism and citrus leafminer population density for the most frequent parasitoid populations. The results of this study show that C. neotropicus has an important role among the native species present in Argentina.Fil: Diez, Patricia Alejandra. Influence of Di erent Sieving Methods on Estimation of Sand Size Parameters
Sieving is one of the most used operational methods to determine sand size parameters
which are essential to analyze coastal dynamics. However, the influence of hand versus mechanical
shaking methods has not yet been studied. Herein, samples were taken from inside the hopper of
a trailing suction dredger and sieved by hand with sieves of 10 and 20 cm diameters on board the
dredger. Afterwards, these same samples were sieved with a mechanical shaker in the laboratory on
land. The results showed di erences for the main size parameters D50, standard deviation, skewness,
and kurtosis. Amongst the main results, it should be noted that the highest values for D50 and
kurtosis were given by the small sieves method. On the other hand, the lowest values were given by
the mechanical shaker method in the laboratory. Furthermore, standard deviation and skewness did
not seem to be a ected by the sieving method which means that all the grainsize distribution was
shifted but the shape remained unchanged. The few samples that do not follow these patterns have a
higher percentage of shells. Finally and definitely, the small sieves should be rejected as a sieving
method aboard
Dynamic behavior of anisotropic plates with various combinations of edge conditions
Peer Reviewe
Thoracic aorta cardiac-cycle related dynamic changes assessed with a 256-slice CT scanner
Objective: The aim of our study was to demonstrate whether the dynamic changes previously documented at the ascending and abdominal aorta are replicated at the thoracic aorta. Methods and results: A consecutive series of thirty patients referred to our institution to undergo CT angiography of the thoracic aorta (CTA) constituted the study population. Patients with diffuse aortic atherosclerosis were excluded from the analysis. All studies were acquired with a 256-MDCT scanner and ECG-gating was performed in all cases. Two orthogonal imaging planes (maximal and minimal diameters) were obtained at three different levels of the descending thoracic aorta, using the distance from the left subclavian artery as proximal landmark: 10, 40, and 80 mm distance. The mean age was 58.9±15.7 years and 16 (53%) patients were male. Descending aorta measurements at 10, 40, and 80 mm distance from the left subclavian artery were all significantly larger within the systolic window (P<0.01 for all comparisons). Measurements of the maximal diameter were systematically larger than the minimal diameters among all aortic positions including ungated, systolic, and diastolic measurements (P<0.05 for all comparisons). Conclusions: The main finding of our pilot investigation was that the thoracic descending aorta undergoes significant conformational changes during the cardiac cycle, irrespective from the distance from the left subclavian artery.Fil: Carrascosa, Patricia. The role of Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine reducing agent in the controlled formation of α,ω-Alkanedithiols Monolayers on Au(111) with monocoordinated and bicoordinated configurations
The addition of the reducing agent tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP) during the formation of α,ω-alkanedithiols monolayers on Au(111) using the immersion method produces the assembly of monolayers with bicoordinated molecules (both S-terminal groups bound to the surface) that have a reductive desorption potential that is more positive than for monolayers with monocoordinated molecules in a standing up configuration. We show that the use of TCEP either during formation of the monolayer or as a post treatment procedure allows the controlled formation of monolayers with bicoordinated or monocoordinated configurations. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the role of TCEP in the formation of the bicoordinated configuration. We investigated the TCEP-dithiol interaction in ethanol solvent as well as the coadsorption of trimethylphosphine with 1,2-ethanedithiol on Au(111). The Brønsted base character of the phosphine facilitates the H exchange from the −SHgroups of the dithiol to the phosphorous atom of TCEP with very low activation energy barriers, thus allowing the thiolate groups to bind to the Au(111) surface, thus yielding the bicoordinated configuration. Dithiol lifting mechanisms such as H exchange between S atoms and the formation of intra/inter layer disulfide bonds have much higher energy barriers.Fil: Euti, Esteban. A review of the biology and ecology of Artemia persimilis Piccinelli & Prosdocimi, 1968 (Crustacea: Anostraca), as basis for its management
The genus Artemia (brine shrimp) is a small cosmopolitan crustacean, which primarily inhabits hypersaline water bodies, such as inland salt lakes, ponds and coastal lagoons. In Argentina two bisexual populations are encountered: Artemia franciscana and A. persimilis. The second is believed to be endemic to Argentina, but recently there have been some reports of their presence in a few locations in southern Chile. Artemia have been extensively studied because it is the most useful living food resource for the larval states of fish and crustaceans, and because of their unique reproductive strategies. Many authors in Argentina have agreed to indicate that A. persimilis needs special attention, and should be evaluated as a natural resource for aquaculture. The present paper provides a brief review of ecological aspects of A. persimilis and an overview of their use in aquaculture.Fil: Mechaly, Alejandro. University of Sidney; Australia. Obsidian circulation: new distribution zones for the argentinean northwest
The results reported in this work are part of the research thet seeking a better undestanding of ther cultural development and social relations carried out by prehispanic peoples that inhabited the western and eastern sides of the Cumbre Calchaquies-Sierras del Aconquija (Tucumán-Argentina) mountain range. There are two goals in the search for the characteristic features in the subjects: 1) Souce determiantion by XRF of nine obsidian samples from different archaological sites on both slopes of Cumbres Calchaquies (Tucumán) and 2) Analyzing obsidian distribaution ragne taking into account the findings of the first goals and comparing them with the database for other sites of the Argentinean Northwest (NOA).Fil: Caria, Mario Alejandro. Co‐Joined Starch Modification and β‐Carotene Dispersion in situ by Planetary Ball Milling
The objective is to evaluate An innovative dispersion method (IM), planetary ball milling (PBM) is evaluated for its potential use in obtaining starch modifications together with in situ β-carotene dispersion. Native (N) and ball milled (BM) rice starches are first evaluated as encapsulating matrices of β-carotene, by means of traditional dispersion method (TM) using a rotor–stator device. Ball milled starch with gelatin (BM+G) preserves β-carotene structure and produces the highest encapsulated β-carotene content (0.154 mg g−1), being four times the N starch content (0.035 mg g−1). By IM, β-carotene structure is partially (69%) preserved by using the BM+G matrix. Encapsulated β-carotene contents >86% (equivalent to 0.50 mg g−1 starch) and encapsulated/surface ratio >6.7 are achieved, obtaining at least 3.0- and 16.3-fold increments compared to TM, respectively. Results from IM reveal the potential of PBM to reach a high degree of β-carotene dispersion in a physically modified starch improving the encapsulation performance with respect to TM.Fil: González, Luciana Carla.
