    Money on the Bookshelf: Using Children\u27s Books to Reach Limited Resource Families with Money Management Education

    Helping families develop financial management skills and improve their communications about money is the goal of Money on the Bookshelf, a program built around children\u27s books and used by Nevada Cooperative Extension to target limited resource audiences. Results showed significant improvements in how often parents: (1) talked with their children about things that relate to money, (2) included their children in talks about how family money is used, and (3) used everyday events as opportunities to talk with their children about money

    Healthcare and Financial Decision Making and Incident Adverse Cognitive Outcomes among Older Adults

    OBJECTIVES To determine if poorer healthcare and financial decision making forecasts adverse cognitive outcomes in old age. Specifically, we hypothesized that poorer decision making would be associated with an increased risk of incident Alzheimer's dementia, an increased risk of incident mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and a more rapid decline in cognition. DESIGN An ongoing prospective observational cohort study of aging (the Rush Memory and Aging Project). SETTING The greater Chicago area. PARTICIPANTS A total of 952 community‐based older adults without dementia at baseline. MEASUREMENTS Participants completed a measure of healthcare and financial decision making at baseline and underwent annual standardized evaluations to track clinical status and cognitive functions (global cognition, episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, perceptual speed, and visuospatial ability). RESULTS During up to 9 years of follow‐up (M  = 5.2 y; standard deviation = 2.7), 156 participants developed Alzheimer's dementia (16.4% of 952), 253 participants developed MCI (33.2% of 760), and each cognitive measure declined (all P s < .001). In Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for age, sex, and education, poorer decision making was associated with an increased risk of incident Alzheimer's dementia (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.10‐1.24; P  < .001) and incident MCI (HR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.10‐1.22; P  < .001). Further, in linear mixed‐effects models, poorer decision making among those who were initially free of cognitive impairment was associated with a more rapid decline in global cognition and four of five specific cognitive domains (all P s < .05). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that poorer healthcare and financial decision making heralds adverse cognitive outcomes in old age

    Posture and Pull Pressure by Horses When Eating Hay or Haylage from a Hay Net Hung at Various Positions

    These studies assessed the pressure forces exerted by horses to extract forage from haynets. Study 1 measured horse posture and pressure in Newtons (10 N = 1 kg Force) exerted on haynets when feeding from either a single (SH) or double layered (DH) haynet (3 kg Hay), hung low or high. Mean and maximum pull forces were higher for the DH vs. SH (DH: 81 ± 2 N, max 156 N; SH: 74 ± 2.9 N, max 121 N; p < 0.01). Horses pulled harder on low (max pull 144 ± 8 N) compared to high (109 ± 8 N; p < 0.05) hung haynets. Mean maximum angles (nose-poll-withers) recorded were 90° ± 9 for SH and 127° ± 10 for DH (p < 0.01). Study 2 was a latin square design measuring forces exerted by 10 horses when eating from haynets (6 kg fill) with hay or haylage and attached to the wall at single or double points. Pull pressures were significantly higher when eating haylage compared to hay (mean: 7.5 kg vs. 2 kg and max: 32 kg versus 12 kg, respectively, (p < 0.001). Forage type and fracture properties had the greatest effect on apprehension rates of hay from haynets. In this study, the majority of force exerted when eating from haynets was below 70 N for hay and for haylage 50% of pulls were higher than 50 N with 8% of pulls above 200 N

    Harm avoidance is associated with progression of parkinsonism in community-dwelling older adults: a prospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that harm avoidance, a trait associated with behavioral inhibition, is associated with the rate of change in parkinsonism in older adults. METHODS: At baseline harm avoidance was assessed with a standard self-report instrument in 969 older people without dementia participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal community-based cohort study. Parkinsonism was assessed annually with a modified version of the motor section of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (mUPDRS). RESULTS: Average follow-up was 5 years. A linear mixed-effects model controlling for age, sex and education showed that for an average participant (female, 80 years old at baseline, with 14 years of education and a harm avoidance score of 10), the overall severity of parkinsonism increased by about 0.05 unit/ year (Estimate, 0.054, S.E., 0.007, p <0.001) and that the level of harm avoidance was associated with the progression of parkinsonism (Estimate, 0.004, S.E., 0.001, p <0.001). Thus, for an average participant, every 6 point (~1 SD) increase in harm avoidance score at baseline, the rate of progression of parkinsonism increased about 50% compared to an individual with an average harm avoidance score. This amount of change in parkinsonism over the course of the study was associated with about a 5% increased risk of death. The association between harm avoidance and progression of parkinsonism persisted when controlling for cognitive function, depressive symptoms, loneliness, neuroticism, late-life cognitive, social and physical activities and chronic health conditions. CONCLUSION: A higher level of the harm avoidance trait is associated with a more rapid progression of parkinsonism in older adults

    Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) seed quality evaluation using seed physical attributes, saturated salt accelerated aging and the seed vigour imaging system

    High seed quality is essential for optimum stand establishment in lettuce. As a result, it is necessary to have seed vigour tests that permit rapid, objective and accurate evaluation of seed quality. This study evaluated physical and physiological seed quality components of four seed lots of six lettuce varieties obtained from a commercial company. Seeds were evaluated for seedling emergence under greenhouse conditions, standard germination, seed physical aspects, the Saturated Salt Accelerated Aging (SSAA) test and the Seed Vigour Imaging System (SVIS). Results indicated that large-seeded lettuce varieties had higher percentage germination, higher SSAA values, higher SVIS index and more rapid and uniform greenhouse emergence. Black-seeded lettuce varieties possessed higher seed quality and less fungal invasion when evaluated by the SSAA test. The SVIS index significantly correlated with SSAA values and seedling emergence under greenhouse conditions suggesting it can be used as a measure of seed vigour. It is concluded that the SSAA and SVIS tests are practical and accurate determinants of lettuce seed quality and distinguish between high and poor quality lettuce seed lots

    Level of dietary protein intake affects glucose turnover in endurance-trained men

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To examine the effects of higher-protein diets on endogenous glucose metabolism in healthy, physically active adults, glucose turnover was assessed in five endurance-trained men (age 21.3 ± 0.3 y, VO<sub>2peak </sub>70.6 ± 0.1 mL kg<sup>-1 </sup>min<sup>-1</sup>) who consumed dietary protein intakes spanning the current dietary reference intakes.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Using a randomized, crossover design, volunteers consumed 4 week eucaloric diets providing either a low (0.8 g kg<sup>-1 </sup>d<sup>-1</sup>; LP), moderate (1.8 g kg<sup>-1 </sup>d<sup>-1</sup>; MP), or high (3.6 g kg<sup>-1 </sup>d<sup>-1</sup>; HP) level of dietary protein. Glucose turnover (Ra, glucose rate of appearance; and Rd glucose rate of disappearance) was assessed under fasted, resting conditions using primed, constant infusions of [6,6-<sup>2</sup>H<sub>2</sub>] glucose. Glucose Ra and Rd (mg kg<sup>-1 </sup>min<sup>-1</sup>) were higher for MP (2.8 ± 0.1 and 2.7 ± 0.1) compared to HP (2.4 ± 0.1 and 2.3 ± 0.2, <it>P </it>< 0.05) and LP (2.3 ± 0.1 and 2.2 ± 0.1, <it>P </it>< 0.01) diets. Glucose levels (mmol/L) were not different (<it>P </it>> 0.05) between LP (4.6 ± 0.1), MP (4.8 ± 0.1), and HP (4.7 ± 0.1) diets.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Level of protein consumption influenced resting glucose turnover in endurance athletes in a state of energy balance with a higher rate of turnover noted for a protein intake of 1.8 g kg<sup>-1 </sup>d<sup>-1</sup>. Findings suggest that consumption of protein in excess of the recommended dietary allowance but within the current acceptable macronutrient distribution range may contribute to the regulation of blood glucose when carbohydrate intake is reduced by serving as a gluconeogenic substrate in endurance-trained men.</p
