    The OmegaWhite Survey for Short-Period Variable Stars IV: Discovery of the warm DQ white dwarf OW J175358.85-310728.9

    We present the discovery and follow-up observations of the second known variable warm DQ white dwarf OW J175358.85-310728.9 (OW J1753-3107). OW J1753-3107 is the brightest of any of the currently known warm or hot DQ and was discovered in the OmegaWhite Survey as exhibiting optical variations on a period of 35.5452 (2) mins, with no evidence for other periods in its light curves. This period has remained constant over the last two years and a single-period sinusoidal model provides a good fit for all follow-up light curves. The spectrum consists of a very blue continuum with strong absorption lines of neutral and ionised carbon, a broad He I 4471 A line, and possibly weaker hydrogen lines. The C I lines are Zeeman split, and indicate the presence of a strong magnetic field. Using spectral Paschen-Back model descriptions, we determine that OW J1753-3107 exhibits the following physical parameters: T_eff = 15430 K, log(g) = 9.0, log(N(C)/N(He)) = -1.2, and the mean magnetic field strength is B_z =2.1 MG. This relatively low temperature and carbon abundance (compared to the expected properties of hot DQs) is similar to that seen in the other warm DQ SDSS J1036+6522. Although OW J1753-3107 appears to be a twin of SDSS J1036+6522, it exhibits a modulation on a period slightly longer than the dominant period in SDSS J1036+6522 and has a higher carbon abundance. The source of variations is uncertain, but they are believed to originate from the rotation of the magnetic white dwarf.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables. Accepted for publication by MNRA

    Environmentally co-occurring mercury resistance plasmids are genetically and phenotypically diverse and confer variable context-dependent fitness effects

    Plasmids are important mobile elements that can facilitate genetic exchange and local adaptation within microbial communities. We compared the sequences of four co-occurring pQBR-family environmental mercury resistance plasmids and measured their effects on competitive fitness of a Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 host, which was isolated at the same field site. Fitness effects of carriage differed between plasmids and were strongly context dependent, varying with medium, plasmid status of competitor and levels of environmental mercury. The plasmids also varied widely in their rates of conjugation and segregational loss. We found that few of the plasmid-borne accessory genes could be ascribed functions, although we identified a putative chemotaxis operon, a type IV pilus-encoding cluster, and a region encoding putative arylsulfatase enzymes, which were conserved across geographically distant isolates. One plasmid, pQBR55, conferred the ability to catabolise sucrose. Transposons, including the mercury resistance Tn5042, appeared to have been acquired by the different pQBR plasmids by recombination, indicating an important role for horizontal gene transfer in the recent evolution of pQBR plasmids. Our findings demonstrate extensive genetic and phenotypic diversity amongst co-occurring members of a plasmid community and suggest a role for environmental heterogeneity in the maintenance of plasmid diversity

    ZnO:Co Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor or Hybrid Nanostructure for Spintronics?

    We have studied the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films. X ray absorption measurements show that Co substitute Zn in the ZnO structure and it is in the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetization (M) measurements show that doped samples are mainly paramagnetic. From M vs. H loops measured at 5 K we found that the values of the orbital L and spin S numbers are between 1 and 1.3 for L and S = 3/2, in agreement with the representative values for isolated Co 2+. The obtained negative values of the Curie-Weiss temperatures indicate the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions between transition metal atoms.Comment: To be published in Journal of Materials Scienc

    The first report of Listeria monocytogenes detected in pinnipeds

    The aim of this study was to describe the pathology in seals from which Listeria monocytogenes was isolated and investigate if the lesions’ nature and severity were related to the phylogeny of isolates. L. monocytogenes was isolated from 13 of 50 (26%) dead grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) pups, six (12%) in systemic distribution, on the Isle of May, Scotland. Similar fatal L. monocytogenes-associated infections were found in a grey seal pup from Carnoustie, Scotland, and a juvenile harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) in the Netherlands. Whole genome sequencing of 15 of the L. monocytogenes isolates identified 13 multilocus sequence types belonging to the L. monocytogenes lineages I and II, but with scant phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance and limited variation in virulence factors. The phylogenetic diversity present suggests there are multiple sources of L. monocytogenes, even for seal pups born in the same colony and breeding season. This is the first description of L. monocytogenes isolated from, and detected in lesions in, pinnipeds and indicates that infection can be systemic and fatal. Therefore, listeriosis may be an emerging or overlooked disease in seals with infection originating from contamination of the marine environment.</p

The papers in this section all approach the question of the state and its relationship to ecological crisis from a political-economic perspective, foregrounding its relationship to the broader political-economic model in which it is situated.     Ag modified mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles for enhanced antibacterial activity in 3D infected skin model

    Bioactive glasses (BG) are versatile materials for various biomedical applications, including bone regeneration and wound healing, due to their bone bonding, antibacterial, osteogenic, and angiogenic properties. In this study, we aimed to enhance the antibacterial activity of SiO2-CaO mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGN) by incorporating silver (Ag) through a surface modification approach. The modified Ag-containing nanoparticles (Ag-MBGN) maintained spherical shape, mesoporous structure, high dispersity, and apatite-forming ability after the surface functionalization. The antibacterial activity of Ag-MBGN was assessed firstly using a planktonic bacteria model. Moreover, a 3D tissue-engineered infected skin model was used for the first time to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Ag-MBGN at the usage dose of 1 mg/mL. In the planktonic bacteria model, Ag-MBGN exhibited a significant antibacterial effect against both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in comparison to non-engineered (Ag-free) MBGN and the blank control. Moreover, Ag-MBGN did not show cytotoxicity towards fibroblasts at the usage dose. However, in the 3D infected skin model, Ag-MBGN only demonstrated antibacterial activity against S. aureus whereas their antibacterial action against P. aeruginosa was inhibited. In conclusion, surface modification by Ag incorporation is a feasible approach to enhance the antibacterial activity of MBGN without significantly impacting their morphology, polydispersity, and apatite-forming ability. The prepared Ag-MBGN are attractive building blocks for the development of 3D antibacterial scaffolds for tissue engineering
