Teatro come esperienza umana che trova una via poetica nella natura. Teatro che si intrecciaintimamente con la vocazione all’autobiografia e con il senso antico dello spirito; ispirato, dunque, altempo della ritualità e volutamente estraneo alla società di massa. Questa è in sintesi la realtà delTeatro delle Ariette, che ha visto i propri fondatori abbandonare le piazze e i palcoscenici bolognesiper ritirarsi sulle colline bazzanesi. Qui hanno ritrovato se stessi e il mestiere di teatranti, grazie allegame con la terra e gli animali. Paola Berselli e Stefano Pasquini, nell’intervista che segue,raccontano come la pratica teatrale sia riuscita a diventare meditazione esistenziale e scelta di vitapersonale e come ogni loro spettacolo crei piccole comunità partecipi che condividono sentimentioriginari e universali.Theatre as human experience which finds its poetic way in the nature. Photoelectrochemical behavior of electrophoretically deposited hematite thin films modified with ti(IV)
: Doping hematite with different elements is a common strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity towards the water oxidation reaction, although the exact effect of these external agents is not yet clearly understood. Using a feasible electrophoretic procedure, we prepared modified hematite films by introducing in the deposition solution Ti(IV) butoxide. Photoelectrochemical performances of all the modified electrodes were superior to the unmodified one, with a 4-fold increase in the photocurrent at 0.65 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M NaOH (pH 13.3) for the 5% Ti-modified electrode, which was the best performing electrode. Subsequent functionalization with an iron-based catalyst led, at the same potential, to a photocurrent of ca. 1.5 mA?cm-2 , one of the highest achieved with materials based on solution processing in the absence of precious elements. AFM, XPS, TEM and XANES analyses revealed the formation of different Ti(IV) oxide phases on the hematite surface, that can reduce surface state recombination and enhance hole injection through local surface field effects, as confirmed by electrochemical impedance analysis
Age estimation in Sepia officinalis using beaks and statoliths
Establishing the age of cephalopods is crucial for understanding their life history, which can then be used for assessment and management. This is particularly true for the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758), one of the most important resources for coastal fisheries. For this reason, an age analysis of S. officinalis was performed for the first time in the Mediterranean, using beaks and statoliths from 158 wild specimens (55–222 mm mantle length; 23–1382 g total weight) at different maturity stages (immature to mature). Growth increments were counted in the lateral wall of the upper beaks and the lateral dome of statoliths. In both cases, a good relationship was found between the counts and the sizes of the animals. The low values of coefficients of variation between the readings obtained for beaks (3.96 ± 1.87%) and statoliths (4.00 ± 1.89%) showed a high level of precision and accuracy in the readings. However, the analysis was simpler for beaks, which were all successfully analyzed, while it was more complex for statoliths, with 69% being lost due to rejection or overgrinding. Based on daily increments previously validated in statoliths, the beaks were cross-verified by comparing their counts with those from statoliths extracted from the same 83 specimens, obtaining a statistically significant relationship between the two counts, confirmed by the ANOVA test. Absolute growth rates that were assessed using both beaks and statoliths indicated that the two sexes had a higher growth rate at 122 and 182 days, which subsequently declined in older specimens. Due to the relative simplicity of its processing method, the beak was finally proposed as a suitable hard structure to study the age of S. officinalis. We also confirmed the good readability of increments in the lateral wall of the beak, which could be considered a valid alternative to the rostrum surface
Exploring the Dark Energy Redshift Desert with the Sandage-Loeb Test
We study the prospects for constraining dark energy at very high redshift
with the Sandage-Loeb (SL) test - a measurement of the evolution of cosmic
redshift obtained by taking quasar spectra at sufficiently separated epochs.
This test is unique in its coverage of the ``redshift desert'', corresponding
roughly to redshifts between 2 and 5, where other dark energy probes are unable
to provide useful information about the cosmic expansion history. Extremely
large telescopes planned for construction in the near future, with ultra high
resolution spectrographs (such as the proposed CODEX), will indeed be able to
measure cosmic redshift variations of quasar Lyman-alpha absorption lines over
a period as short as ten years. We find that these measurements can constrain
non-standard and dynamical dark energy models with high significance and in a
redshift range not accessible with future dark energy surveys. As the cosmic
signal increases linearly with time, measurements made over several decades by
a generation of patient cosmologists may provide definitive constraints on the
expansion history in the era that follows the dark ages but precedes the time
when standard candles and rulers come into existence.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Sialendoscopy for salivary stones: principles, technical skills and therapeutic experience
La scialoadenite cronica ostruttiva rappresenta una delle più frequenti patologie non-neoplastiche delle ghiandole salivari e la scialoendoscopia è sempre più utilizzata nella sua diagnosi e nel suo trattamento, associata o meno con la litotripsia laser. La scialoendoscopia può essere inoltre associata ad approcci esterni mini-invasivi nelle litiasi troppo voluminose per essere rimosse con un approccio unicamente endoscopico. Il presente articolo riporta l’esperienza delle Cliniche Otorinolaringoiatriche dell’Ospedale Sant’Orsola-Malpighi di Bologna e dell’Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria di Cagliari, Italia. È stata eseguita un’analisi retrospettiva su 48 pazienti (26 femmine, 22 maschi; età media di 45,3 anni; range 8-83 anni) trattati per patologia cronica ostruttiva delle ghiandole salivari maggiori mediante procedure chirurgiche endoscopiche o combinate da novembre 2010 ad aprile 2016 presso l’Azienda-Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Cagliari. I risultati dell’Ospedale Sant’Orsola-Malpighi di Bologna erano stati precedentemente pubblicati. Gli aspetti tecnici della scialoendoscopia sono stati accuratamente descritti. I pazienti trattati presso l’Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria di Cagliari presentavano una patologia unilaterale in 40 casi e bilaterale in 8 casi; sono state trattate 56 ghiandole salivari maggiori (22 sottomandibolari e 34 parotidi). 5 pazienti sono stati sottoposti a scialoendoscopia bilaterale per parotite ricorrente giovanile, 10 per patologia ostruttiva non litiasica e 33 (68,75%) presentavano calcoli salivari (1 paziente presentava una litiasi parotidea bilaterale). Solo 8 pazienti sono stati sottoposti a scialectomia radicale per via esterna (5 scialectomie sottomandibolare e 3 parotidectomie). La chirurgia conservativa nei pazienti con scialoadenite cronica ostruttiva appare efficace e può essere realizzata mediante un approccio puramente endoscopico o combinato, con un’alta percentuale di successo. La procedura richiede una strumentazione adeguata e deve essere eseguita da un chirurgo esperto, che abbia svolto un training specifico scialoendoscopico, in modo da evitare le possibili complicanze maggiori e minori. La scialectomia tradizionale rappresenta la “extrema ratio”, limitata nei casi in cui un approccio conservativo sia risultato inefficace o controindicato.Obstructive sialadenitis is the most common non-neoplastic disease of the salivary glands, and sialendoscopy is increasingly used in both diagnosis and treatment, associated in selected cases with endoscopic laser lithotripsy. Sialendoscopy is also used for combined minimally invasive external and endoscopic approaches in patients with larger and proximal stones that would require excessively long laser procedures. The present paper reports on the technical experience from the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit of the Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital of Bologna, and from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the University Hospital of Cagliari, Italy, including the retrospective analysis of the endoscopic and endoscopic assisted procedures performed on 48 patients (26 females and 22 males; median age 45.3; range 8-83 years) treated for chronic obstructive sialadenitis at the University Hospital of Cagliari from November 2010 to April 2016. The results from the Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital of Bologna have been previously published. The technical aspects of sialendoscopy are carefully described. The retrospective analysis of the University Hospital of Cagliari shows that the disease was unilateral in 40 patients and bilateral in 8; a total of 56 major salivary glands were treated (22 submandibular glands and 34 parotids). Five patients underwent bilateral sialendoscopy for juvenile recurrent parotitis. 10 patients were treated for non-lithiasic obstructive disease. In 33 patients (68.75%) the obstruction was caused by salivary stones (bilateral parotid lithiasis in 1 case). Only 8 patients needed a sialectomy (5 submandibular glands and 3 parotids). The conservative approach to obstructive sialadenitis is feasible and can be performed either purely endoscopically or in a combined modality, with a high percentage of success. The procedure must be performed with dedicated instrumentation by a skilled surgeon after proper training since minor to major complications can be encountered. Sialectomy should be the "extrema ratio" after failure of a conservative approach
Behind the impact of introduced trout in high altitude lakes: adult, not juvenile fish are responsible of the selective predation on crustacean zooplankton
Introduced fish seriously affect zooplankton communities in mountain lakes, often leading to the loss of large species. Selective predation is recognized to be the ultimate cause of such a strong impact. Here we describe the selection of zooplankton prey by analyzing the stomach contents of more than 300 brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) inhabiting seven alpine lakes in the Gran Paradiso National Park (western Italian Alps). Our results show that planktivory is much more common in young fish, which feed on a larger number of taxa, but also adult fish maintain the ability to feed on zooplankton. There is a direct dependence between the length of zooplankton prey and the length of their fish predators, and adult, not juvenile fish are responsible of the selective predation on large crustacean zooplankton, which drive the impact of introduced fish throughout the entire zooplankton community. In some rare cases, large zooplankton populations develop in the presence of brook trout, and planktivory can become an important temporary resource for adult fish during the ice-free season. Thus, in the early stages of the establishment of non-native trout in alpine lakes, large-bodied zooplankton may represent an important food resource

Hands-feet wireless devices: Test-retest reliability and discriminant validity of motor measures in Parkinson's disease telemonitoring
Background Telemonitoring, a branch of telemedicine, involves the use of technological tools to remotely detect clinical data and evaluate patients. Telemonitoring of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) should be performed using reliable and discriminant motor measures. Furthermore, the method of data collection and transmission, and the type of subjects suitable for telemonitoring must be well defined. Objective To analyze differences in patients with PD and healthy controls (HC) with the wearable inertial device SensHands-SensFeet (SH-SF), adopting a standardized acquisition mode, to verify if motor measures provided by SH-SF have a high discriminating capacity and high intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Methods Altogether, 64 patients with mild-to-moderate PD and 50 HC performed 14 standardized motor activities for assessing bradykinesia, postural and resting tremors, and gait parameters. SH-SF inertial devices were used to acquire movements and calculate objective motor measures of movement (total: 75). For each motor task, five or more biomechanical parameters were measured twice. The results were compared between patients with PD and HC. Results Fifty-eight objective motor measures significantly differed between patients with PD and HC; among these, 32 demonstrated relevant discrimination power (Cohen's d > 0.8). The test-retest reliability was excellent in patients with PD (median ICC = 0.85 right limbs, 0.91 left limbs) and HC (median ICC = 0.78 right limbs, 0.82 left limbs). Conclusion In a supervised environment, the SH-SF device provides motor measures with good results in terms of reliability and discriminant ability. The reliability of SH-SF measurements should be evaluated in an unsupervised home setting in future studies
Exploitation of Tenebrio molitor larvae as biological factories for human probiotics, an exploratory study
The exploitation of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae for the bioaugmentation of probiotic Bacillus
clausii strains was evaluated during a 7-day rearing period. qPCR was applied to evaluate the persistence
and growth of B. clausii in the rearing substrate and larvae (washed and non-washed). Moreover, the effect
of freeze-drying of larvae on B. clausii viability was evaluated. The results demonstrated the suitability of
yellow mealworm as biological factories for the multiplication of B. clausii through a simple and inexpensive
procedure, in view of the further application of larvae as foods and food ingredients. In more detail, an increase
in the load of B. clausii was observed during the 7-day rearing of larvae fed wheat middlings
spiked with 1 Log cells g−1. Further research is needed to evaluate the most suitable technologies and processing
parameters for obtaining yellow mealworm-based ingredients with a stable and active population of
probiotic B. clausii
