Taloushallinnon yrityksen valmistautuminen EU:n uuteen tietosuoja-asetukseen

Systems assessment of water savings impact of controlled environment agriculture (CEA) utilizing wirelessly networked Sense•Decide•Act•Communicate (SDAC) systems.
Reducing agricultural water use in arid regions while maintaining or improving economic productivity of the agriculture sector is a major challenge. Controlled environment agriculture (CEA, or, greenhouse agriculture) affords advantages in direct resource use (less land and water required) and productivity (i.e., much higher product yield and quality per unit of resources used) relative to conventional open-field practices. These advantages come at the price of higher operating complexity and costs per acre. The challenge is to implement and apply CEA such that the productivity and resource use advantages will sufficiently outweigh the higher operating costs to provide for overall benefit and viability. This project undertook an investigation of CEA for livestock forage production as a water-saving alternative to open-field forage production in arid regions. Forage production is a large consumer of fresh water in many arid regions of the world, including the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. With increasing competition among uses (agriculture, municipalities, industry, recreation, ecosystems, etc.) for limited fresh water supplies, agricultural practice alternatives that can potentially maintain or enhance productivity while reducing water use warrant consideration. The project established a pilot forage production greenhouse facility in southern New Mexico based on a relatively modest and passive (no active heating or cooling) system design pioneered in Chihuahua, Mexico. Experimental operations were initiated in August 2004 and carried over into early-FY05 to collect data and make initial assessments of operational and technical system performance, assess forage nutrition content and suitability for livestock, identify areas needing improvement, and make initial assessment of overall feasibility. The effort was supported through the joint leveraging of late-start FY04 LDRD funds and bundled CY2004 project funding from the New Mexico Small Business Technical Assistance program at Sandia. Despite lack of optimization with the project system, initial results show the dramatic water savings potential of hydroponic forage production compared with traditional irrigated open field practice. This project produced forage using only about 4.5% of the water required for equivalent open field production. Improved operation could bring water use to 2% or less. The hydroponic forage production system and process used in this project are labor intensive and not optimized for minimum water usage. Freshly harvested hydroponic forage has high moisture content that dilutes its nutritional value by requiring that livestock consume more of it to get the same nutritional content as conventional forage. In most other aspects the nutritional content compares well on a dry weight equivalent basis with other conventional forage. More work is needed to further explore and quantify the opportunities, limitations, and viability of this technique for broader use. Collection of greenhouse environmental data in this project was uniquely facilitated through the implementation and use of a self-organizing, wirelessly networked, multi-modal sensor system array with remote cell phone data link capability. Applications of wirelessly networked sensing with improved modeling/simulation and other Sandia technologies (e.g., advanced sensing and control, embedded reasoning, modeling and simulation, materials, robotics, etc.) can potentially contribute to significant improvement across a broad range of CEA applications
ADARRI:a novel method to detect spurious R-peaks in the electrocardiogram for heart rate variability analysis in the intensive care unit
We developed a simple and fully automated method for detecting artifacts in the R-R interval (RRI) time series of the ECG that is tailored to the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. From ECG recordings of 50 adult ICU-subjects we selected 60 epochs with valid R-peak detections and 60 epochs containing artifacts leading to missed or false positive R-peak detections. Next, we calculated the absolute value of the difference between two adjacent RRIs (adRRI), and obtained the empirical probability distributions of adRRI values for valid R-peaks and artifacts. From these, we calculated an optimal threshold for separating adRRI values arising from artifact versus non-artefactual data. We compared the performance of our method with the methods of Berntson and Clifford on the same data. We identified 257,458 R-peak detections, of which 235,644 (91.5%) were true detections and 21,814 (8.5%) arose from artifacts. Our method showed superior performance for detecting artifacts with sensitivity 100%, specificity 99%, precision 99%, positive likelihood ratio of 100 and negative likelihood ratio <0.001 compared to Berntson’s and Clifford’s method with a sensitivity, specificity, precision and positive and negative likelihood ratio of 99%, 78%, 82%, 4.5, 0.013 for Berntson’s method and 55%, 98%, 96%, 27.5, 0.460 for Clifford’s method, respectively. A novel algorithm using a patient-independent threshold derived from the distribution of adRRI values in ICU ECG data identifies artifacts accurately, and outperforms two other methods in common use. Furthermore, the threshold was calculated based on real data from critically ill patients and the algorithm is easy to implement
The Emotional and Attentional Impact of Exposure to One's Own Body in Bulimia Nervosa: A Physiological View
Background:
Body dissatisfaction is the most relevant body image disturbance in bulimia nervosa (BN). Research has shown that viewing one's own body evokes negative thoughts and emotions in individuals with BN. However, the psychophysiological mechanisms involved in this negative reaction have not yet been clearly established. Our aim was to examine the emotional and attentional processes that are activated when patients with BN view their own bodies.
Method:
We examined the effects of viewing a video of one's own body on the physiological (eye-blink startle, cardiac defense, and skin conductance) and subjective (pleasure, arousal, and control ratings) responses elicited by a burst of 110 dB white noise of 500 ms duration. The participants were 30 women with BN and 30 healthy control women. The experimental task consisted of two consecutive and counterbalanced presentations of the auditory stimulus preceded, alternatively, by a video of the participant's own body versus no such video.
Results:
The results showed that, when viewing their own bodies, women with BN experienced (a) greater inhibition of the startle reflex, (b) greater cardiac acceleration in the first component of the defense reaction, (c) greater skin conductance response, and (d) less subjective pleasure and control combined with greater arousal, compared with the control participants.
Conclusion:
Our findings suggest that, for women with BN, peripheral-physiological responses to self-images are dominated by attentional processes, which provoke an immobility reaction caused by a dysfunctional negative response to their own body. The present research was supported by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness [PSI2009-08417 and PSI2012-31395]. RICORS2040 : The need for collaborative research in chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent and poorly known killer. The current concept of CKD is relatively young and uptake by the public, physicians and health authorities is not widespread. Physicians still confuse CKD with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. For the wider public and health authorities, CKD evokes kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In Spain, the prevalence of KRT is 0.13%. Thus health authorities may consider CKD a non-issue: very few persons eventually need KRT and, for those in whom kidneys fail, the problem is 'solved' by dialysis or kidney transplantation. However, KRT is the tip of the iceberg in the burden of CKD. The main burden of CKD is accelerated ageing and premature death. The cut-off points for kidney function and kidney damage indexes that define CKD also mark an increased risk for all-cause premature death. CKD is the most prevalent risk factor for lethal coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the factor that most increases the risk of death in COVID-19, after old age. Men and women undergoing KRT still have an annual mortality that is 10- to 100-fold higher than similar-age peers, and life expectancy is shortened by ~40 years for young persons on dialysis and by 15 years for young persons with a functioning kidney graft. CKD is expected to become the fifth greatest global cause of death by 2040 and the second greatest cause of death in Spain before the end of the century, a time when one in four Spaniards will have CKD. However, by 2022, CKD will become the only top-15 global predicted cause of death that is not supported by a dedicated well-funded Centres for Biomedical Research (CIBER) network structure in Spain. Realizing the underestimation of the CKD burden of disease by health authorities, the Decade of the Kidney initiative for 2020-2030 was launched by the American Association of Kidney Patients and the European Kidney Health Alliance. Leading Spanish kidney researchers grouped in the kidney collaborative research network Red de Investigación Renal have now applied for the Redes de Investigación Cooperativa Orientadas a Resultados en Salud (RICORS) call for collaborative research in Spain with the support of the Spanish Society of Nephrology, Federación Nacional de Asociaciones para la Lucha Contra las Enfermedades del Riñón and ONT: RICORS2040 aims to prevent the dire predictions for the global 2040 burden of CKD from becoming true

Abstract
This study examines how meanings are constructed in newspaper texts. The focus is on the meanings of particular words which are being used when referring to people's ability to work. Besides the lexical choices, this study demonstrates the discourses which are activated when writing about the topic. The approach taken is linguistically oriented and based on both critical discourse analysis and systemic-functional grammar. In this framework, language is seen as a resource for making meaning. Furthermore, a particular interest is taken in the relation between language, power and sociocultural practices.
The data consists of 126 texts published in 1999–2000 in Helsingin Sanomat, the largest broadsheet newspaper in Finland. The analysis deals with discourse on working ability in general with special focus on five case studies. The most common discourses are classified as follows: 1) In discourse on expertise, many texts are related to power and knowledge which is needed when evaluating someone's ability to work. The sources who have special knowledge have regular access to the discourse. 2) In discourse on cases where working ability diminishes, the process is usually caused by health problems, aging or problems related to work. 3) In discourse on improving and maintaining one's working ability, the most common means and methods seem to be rehabilitation and workplace health promotion as well as development of work. 4) Attitudes towards working are discussed in discourse on work. It includes various negative aspects, such as unemployment, marginalisation, burn out and rapid changes at work. 5) In discourse on pension benefit, many controversial issues arise about who has the right to have a pension, if our system should be reformed, and about how to keep people working longer.
Central participants in this data are experts: research workers, consultants, doctors and other professionals working in health care and rehabilitation as well as politicians. Participant relations are usually based on institutional roles and an expert-client relationship, such as doctors and patients, employers and workers, officials and applicants. The clients are often represented in a passive role as targets of institutional action or sometimes even victims of action with difficulties in getting work or pension.
The discourse related to working ability can be seen as a battlefield of contradictory views, for instance, on traditional ways of dealing with problems (e.g. medication, physical rehabilitation, physical training) and other ideas on promoting well-being (e.g. innovations at workplace, educational courses). Power struggles can also be seen in arguments about the most reliable judge to decide if someone is able to work or not. On the one hand, working ability is connected to health and other personal qualities, and on the other hand to rapid change in the nature of work.
In sum, working ability is seen as an entity which changes. It belongs to expert knowledge. It is a target of institutional actions and a domain of development. Working ability is portrayed as a matter of attitude towards working and also as a political and economic issue.
This study contributes to ways in which a significant social phenomenon can be approached from a linguistic aspect, and it gives an idea how media texts may affect the ways of speaking about contemporary issues. The meaning, derived from this data, is constructed in a cultural and social context which is particularly Finnish. The discourse shows continuity with the texts produced in earlier centuries, and it is still changing. Thus, working ability can be replaced with work-related well-being.Tiivistelmä
Tutkimus käsittelee merkitysten rakentumista lehtiteksteissä. Tutkimus kohdistuu erityisesti sellaisten sanojen merkityksiin, joilla viitataan työkykyyn.
Lähteet, joilla on erikoistietoa, pääsevät säännöllisesti osallistumaan diskurssiin.
