    Pro-poor Growth and Policies: The Asian Experience

    The objective of this paper is to assemble on a systematic basis the available data on Asian countries and then analyse the relationship between growth and poverty reduction in a long-term perspective, as well as the impact of different macroeconomic variables on the intensity of this relationship. The results indicate that there is not only a strong positive relationship between growth and poverty reduction, but also that this relationship is highly variable across countries and time periods. The key macroeconomic determinants of the degree of pro-poor growth appear to be the rates of employment and agricultural growth. Inflation, at least up to a certain rate, does not impact poverty negatively, while the role of exports is essentially indirect through the contribution to the overall rate of economic growth. Examination of the change in policy stance of the Asian countries during the 1990s in relation to the 1980s demonstrates that on balance the mix of policies has not been pro-poor. The apparent sacrifice of growth in pursuit of macroeconomic stability has diminished the impact on poverty reduction. Given the relatively weak trade-off between inflation and growth with regard to the impact on poverty and the fact that inflation rates are currently low in the region, it is argued that countries can be more flexible in their policy stance with regard to the adoption of more growth-oriented as opposed to stabilisation policies. In particular, a case is made for resorting to a more expansionary counter-cyclical fiscal policy, led by higher levels of public investment, supported by appropriate monetary and exchange rate policies. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the policies designed to achieve faster agricultural development and greater employment generation.

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengamati peran Kredit Umum Pedesaan BRI UnitSimpang Baru dalam mengembangkan usaha mikro di Kota Pekanbaru.Data primer diperoleh melalui kuisioner dengan sampel sebanyak 65 orang. Datasekunder diperoleh dari lembagayang terkaityaitu BRI Unit Simpang Baru.Analisadata yang digunakan adalah deskriptif yaitu penganalisaan data denganmenggambarkan seluruh peristiwa dari objek penelitian dan mengaitkannya denganteoriyang ada dan ditabulasikan ke dalam tabel-tabel kemudian dipqparkan.Hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa peningkatan modal usaha sebelum menerimaKUPEDES secara umum pada tahun 2003 sebesar Rp. 18.515.385,- menjadi Rp.35.438.462,- pada tahun 2009 dengan rata-rata peningkatan sebesar 87,31% untukomset secara umum pada tahun 2003 dari Rp. 8.520.000,- menjadi Rp. 23.564.615,-atau sebesar 170,95% dan untuk pendapatan mengalami peningkatan sebesar85,91% yaitu secara umum pada tahun 2003 dari Rp. 3.569.538,- menjadi Rp.6.636.154, - pada tahun 2009

    An Ayurvedic insight to Keratoconus - A Case Report

    Achievement of scientific integrity and credibility of the concepts can only be with well designed and conducted research studies. Keratoconus is a non inflammatory bilateral ectatic condition of cornea in its axial part presenting with defective vision due to progressive myopia and irregular astigmatism. It is diagnosed by clinical examination and corneal topographic techniques. In contemporary medicine, it is treated with collagen cross linking which may slow down the disease progress, effectiveness of treatment is still questionable. Here comes the need of Ayurveda to explore with better treatments. Based on symptoms in Ayurveda it can be correlated to Prathama Patalagata Timira, being Vatika predominance. This study describes a 20 Year old female patient diagnosed as Keratoconus and underwent Ayurvedic treatment protocol according to the line of management of Prathama Patalagata Timira which is Vatahara in nature such as Mahatriphala Ghrita internally, Nasya with Anu Taila,Tarpana with Mahatriphala Ghrita , Putapaka, Shigru Navaneeta Pindi for 3 sittings.     Analysis of the dynamics of the FT4 powder rheometer

    Traditional powder flow measurement devices, such as shear cells, operate in the quasi-static regime of shear strain rate. The FT4 powder rheometer of Freeman Technology, developed over the last two decades, has provided a clearer differentiation of powder flowability in some instances. This has been attributed to the instrument operating in the dynamic regime of shear strain rates, a feature that has yet to be established. We report an analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a bed of glass beads made cohesive by silanisation and subjected to standard FT4 testing procedure, where a rotating blade is driven into a cylindrical bed, using a combination of experimental measurements and numerical simulations by the Distinct Element Method. The DEM analysis underestimates the flow energy measured experimentally, although the agreement is improved when sliding friction is increased. The shear stress of the powder in front of the blade is shown to be roughly constant along the radial direction and increasing as the impeller penetrates the bed, suggesting a characteristic shear stress can be determined for a powder under a given test conditions in the FT4. For ease of simulations large beads were used (1.7 – 2.1 mm). Future work will investigate the influence of particle properties and operational conditions on the prevailing stresses and strain rates

    Occurrence & nucleotide sequence analysis of hepatitis G virus in patients with acute viral hepatitis & fulminant hepatitis

    Background & objectives: Association of hepatitis G virus (HGV) with acute viral hepatitis (AVH) and fulminant hepatitis (FH) is not clearly understood.This study was designed to asses the occurrence of HGV infection and its relationship with other hepatotropic viruses in patients with FH and AVH and also to determine the nucleotide sequence of HGV isolates. Methods: The study included 100 patients of FH and 125 of AVH on the basis of clinical examination, liver function test and serology for hepatitis A, B, C and E virus. HGV RNA was detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and direct sequencing for 4 randomly selected samples followed by phylogenetic analysis. Results: Of the 100 patients with FH, 30 were negative for hepatitis viruses A, B, C and E by serology (non A - non E) while 60 were negative in the AVH group. In the non A- non -E hepatitis group, HGV was positive in 16.66 per cent (5/30) cases of FH, 10 per cent (6/60) cases of AVH and 6 per cent (6/100) of healthy controls. The difference in HGV seropositivity between FH and AVH patients was statistically not significant compared to healthy controls, while HBV and HCV infections were significant. The four isolates sequenced seemed to be of same type and close to Chinese strain of HGV (Y13755.1 Y13756.1 Y15407, and U67782) on phylogeny. Interpretation & conclusion: In HGV infection was not found to be clinically significant as well as nonpathogenic in the patients of FH and AVH and appeared to be an innocent bystander in the course of the disease. The four sequenced HGV isolates showed close pairing with Chinese strains

    Facile synthesis and photoluminescence spectroscopy of 3D-triangular GaN nano prism islands

    We report a strategy for fabrication of 3D triangular GaN nano prism islands (TGNPI) grown on Ga/Si(553) substrate at tow temperature by N-2(+) ions implantation using a sputtering gun technique. The annealing of Ga/Si(553) (600 degrees C) followed by nitridation (2 key) shows the formation of high quality GaN TGNPI cross-section. TGNPI morphology has been confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, these nano prism islands exhibit prominent ultra-violet luminescence peaking at 366 nm upon 325 nm excitation wavelength along with a low intensity yellow luminescence broad peak at 545 nm which characterizes low defects density TGNPI. Furthermore, the time-resolved spectroscopy of luminescent TGNPI in nanoseconds holds promise for its futuristic application in next generation UV-based sensors as well as many portable optoelectronic devices

    Effect of Moringa oleifera (Lam.) pods as feed additive on egg antioxidants, chemical composition and performance of commercial layers

    The present study was designed to investigate the influence of Moringa oleifera (Lam.) pod meal (MPM) on production, immunity, and functional food index of chicken eggs. Two hundred HyLine W36 layer birds aged 50 weeks, 1469 ± 46.63 g, were assigned to four treatments in a completely randomized design, with five replicates and ten birds each. Diets A, B, C, and D were formulated with the same caloric and protein levels, but with differing MPM dose levels of 0, 5, 10, and 15g MPM/kg finisher diet, respectively. Data for production performance, quality, and chemical composition of eggs were analysed by one-way ANOVA, and means were compared with Duncan’s multiple range test. As a result of this study, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and egg mass (EM) were significantly decreased and recorded lowest in Group B, which was offered 5 g/kg above the basal diet. Bioactives such as β-carotene, quercetin, and selenium levels were increased (540, 121, & 72.21μg/100g of yolk, respectively), whereas cholesterol levels in egg yolk and serum were decreased significantly, that is, 201.87 mg/100g and 8.47 mg/dl, respectively. Serum biochemical indicators, including serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), glucose, creatinine and cholesterol levels, were lowered significantly. Proximate analysis of egg yolk showed that moisture and ether extract were decreased, whereas crude protein (CP), ash and minerals, sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and phosphorus (P) contents were increased.     Initiation codon mutation in βB1-crystallin (CRYBB1) associated with autosomal recessive nuclear pulverulent cataract

    PurposeTo identify the molecular basis for autosomal recessively inherited congenital non-syndromic pulverulent cataracts in a consanguineous family with four affected children.MethodsAn autozygosity mapping strategy using high density SNP microarrays and microsatellite markers was employed to detect regions of homozygosity. Subsequently good candidate genes were screened for mutations by direct sequencing.ResultsThe SNP microarray data demonstrated a 24.96 Mb region of homozygosity at 22q11.21-22q13.2 which was confirmed by microsatellite marker analysis. The candidate target region contained the beta-crystallin gene cluster and direct sequencing in affected family members revealed a novel mutation in CRYBB1 (c.2T>A; p.Met1Lys).ConclusionsTo our knowledge this is the first case of an initiation codon mutation in a human crystallin gene, and only the second report of a CRYBB1 mutation associated with autosomal recessive congenital cataracts. In addition, although a number of genetic causes of autosomal dominant pulverulent cataracts have been identified (including CRYBB1) this is the first gene to have been implicated in autosomal recessive nuclear pulverulent cataract
