    A decade of solar Type III radio bursts observed by the Nancay Radioheliograph 1998-2008

    We present a statistical survey of almost 10 000 radio Type III bursts observed by the Nancay Radioheliograph from 1998 to 2008, covering nearly a full solar cycle. In particular, sources sizes, positions, and fluxes were examined. We find an east-west asymmetry in source positions which could be attributed to a 6(+/-)1 degree eastward tilt of the magnetic field, that source FWHM sizes s roughly follow a solar-cycle averaged distribution dN/ds = 14 {\nu}^{-3.3} s^{-4} arcmin^{-1} day^{-1}, and that source fluxes closely follow a solar-cycle averaged dN/dS_{\nu} = 0.34 {\nu}^{-2.9} S_{\nu}^{-1.7} sfu^{-1} day^{-1} distribution (when {\nu} is in GHz, s in arcmin, and S_{\nu} in sfu). Fitting a barometric density profile yields a temperature of 0.6 MK, while a solar wind-like (\propto h^{-2}) density profile yields a density of 1.2x10^6 cm^{-3} at an altitude of 1 RS, assuming harmonic emission. Finally, we found that the solar-cycle averaged radiated Type III energy could be similar in magnitude to that radiated by nanoflares via non-thermal bremsstrahlung processes, and we hint at the possibility that escaping electron beams might carry as much energy away from the corona as is introduced into it by accelerated nanoflare electrons.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figure

    Laser ablation ICP-MS on KCC microstructure - pilot study

    In a two week pilot study at the Keck Laser Ice Facility at the Climate Change Institute in Orono, Maine, laser ablation ICP-MS experiments were conducted on samples from four depths of the Alpine ice core KCC from Colle Gnifetti that were selected based on available fabric and microstructure data. Impurity fractions of sodium, iron and calcium were measured with respect to the visible microstructure on the ice sample surface. The first assessment of the data suggests that sodium concentrations are increased in the grain bound- aries regardless of ice core depth and grain properties, while iron concentrations show no discernible spatial pattern. Althought the results cannot be interpreted conclusively – due to the pilot character of the study – the po- tential of this technique for high-resolution impurity measurements with regard to the local microstructure becomes evident and possible improvements for deeper studies could be identified

    Reducing the cost and delay and improving quality are major issues for product and software development, especially in the automotive domain. Product line engineering is a wellknown approach to engineer systems with the aim to reduce costs and development time as well as to improve the product quality. Feature models enable to make logical selection of features and obtain a filtered set of assets that compose the product. We propose to use a color code in feature models to make possible decisions visual in the feature tree. The color code is explained and its use is illustrated.     Location of Narrowband Spikes in Solar Flares

    Narrowband spikes of the decimeter type have been identified in dynamic spectrograms of Phoenix-2 of ETH Zurich and located in position with the Nancay Radioheliograph at the same frequency. The spike positions have been compared with the location of hard X-ray emission and the thermal flare plasma in soft X-rays and EUV lines. The decimetric spikes are found to be single sources located some 20" to 400" away from the flare site in hard or soft X-rays. In most cases there is no bright footpoint nearby. In at least two cases the spikes are near loop tops. These observations do not confirm the widely held view that the spike emission is produced by some loss-cone instability masering near the footpoints of flare loops. On the other hand, the large distance to the flare sites and the fact that these spikes are all observed in the flare decay phase make the analyzed spike sources questionable sites for the main flare electron acceleration.     Exhaled nitric oxide and airway hyperresponsiveness in workers: a preliminary study in lifeguards

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) are two characteristic features of asthma. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) has shown good correlation with AHR in asthmatics. Less information is available about FENO as a marker of inflammation from work exposures. We thus examined the relation between FENO and AHR in lifeguards undergoing exposure to chloramines in indoor pools.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>39 lifeguards at six indoor pools were given a respiratory health questionnaire, FENO measurements, spirometry, and a methacholine bronchial challenge (MBC) test. Subjects were labeled MBC+ if the forced expiratory volume (FEV1) fell by 20% or more. The normalized linear dose-response slope (NDRS) was calculated as the percentage fall in FEV1 at the last dose divided by the total dose given. The relation between MBC and FENO was assessed using logistic regression adjusting on confounding factors. The association between NDRS and log-transformed values of FENO was tested in a multiple linear regression model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of lifeguards MBC+ was 37.5%. In reactors, the median FENO was 18.9 ppb (90% of the predicted value) vs. 12.5 ppb (73% predicted) in non-reactors. FENO values ≥ 60% of predicted values were 80% sensitive and 42% specific to identify subjects MBC+. In the logistic regression model no other factor had an effect on MBC after adjusting for FENO. In the linear regression model, NDRS was significantly predicted by log FENO.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In lifeguards working in indoor swimming pools, elevated FENO levels are associated with increased airway responsiveness.</p

    A stochastic model is proposed to predict the intramembranous process in periprosthetic healing in the early post-operative period. The methodology was validated by a canine experimental model. In this first part, the effects of each individual uncertain biochemical factor on the bone-implant healing are examined, including the coefficient of osteoid synthesis, the coefficients of haptotactic and chemotactic migration of osteoblastic population and the radius of the drill hole. A multi-phase reactive model solved by an explicit finite difference scheme is combined with the polynomial chaos expansion to solve the stochastic system.     Report on the tracer tests (experimental setup, results and interpretation)

    Tracer experiments were performed in the Brévilles test site in order to highlight vertical variations in groundwater fluxes related to vertical variations hydraulic conductivity, to estimate contaminant travel time from several locations in the catchment to the springs and to identify transport processes affecting the fate of solutes in the saturated part of the aquifer. Following a first tracer experiment with uranine and sulforhodamine G in 2003, four tracer injections were performed in November 2005 in different piezometers, using uranine, sulforhodamine B, iodide and lithium. Tracer concentrations were monitored in the injection wells and at the basin outlet (spring and gauging station). Using the FVPDM method, concentration evolutions monitored in the injection wells allowed one to estimate local Darcy fluxes. At the basin outlet, only two tracers were recovered. Analyses of breakthrough curves confirm the stratification of the aquifer with more permeable levels in the lower part.     Pseudomonas fluorescens alters epithelial permeability and translocates across Caco-2/TC7 intestinal cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Pseudomonas fluorescens </it>has long been considered as a psychrotrophic microorganism. Recently, we have shown that clinical strains of <it>P. fluorescens </it>(biovar 1) are able to adapt at a growth temperature of 37°C or above and induce a specific inflammatory response. Interestingly, a highly specific antigen of <it>P. fluorescens</it>, I2, is detected in the serum of patients with Crohn's disease but the possible role of this bacterium in the disease has not yet been explored. In the present study, we examined the ability of a psychrotrophic and a clinical strain of <it>P. fluorescens </it>to modulate the permeability of a Caco-2/TC7 intestinal epithelial model, reorganize the actin cytoskeleton, invade the target cells and translocate across the epithelium. The behaviour of these two strains was compared to that of the well known opportunistic pathogen <it>P. aeruginosa </it>PAO1.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both strains of <it>P. fluorescens </it>were found to decrease the transepithelial resistance (TER) of Caco-2/TC7 differentiated monolayers. This was associated with an increase in paracellular permeability and F-actin microfilaments rearrangements. Moreover, the invasion and translocation tests demonstrated that the two strains used in this study can invade and translocate across the differentiated Caco-2/TC7 cell monolayers.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present work shows for the first time, that <it>P. fluorescens </it>is able to alter the intestinal epithelial barrier function by disorganizing the F-actin microfilament network. Moreover, we reveal that independently of their origins, the two <it>P. fluorescens </it>strains can translocate across differentiated Caco-2/TC7 cell monolayers by using the transcellular pathway. These findings could, at least in part, explain the presence of the <it>P. fluorescens </it>specific I2 antigen in the serum of patients with Crohn's disease.</p
