Prediction of extreme events in the OFC model on a small world network
We investigate the predictability of extreme events in a dissipative
Olami-Feder-Christensen model on a small world topology. Due to the mechanism
of self-organized criticality, it is impossible to predict the magnitude of the
next event knowing previous ones, if the system has an infinite size. However,
by exploiting the finite size effects, we show that probabilistic predictions
of the occurrence of extreme events in the next time step are possible in a
finite system. In particular, the finiteness of the system unavoidably leads to
repulsive temporal correlations of extreme events. The predictability of those
is higher for larger magnitudes and for larger complex network sizes. Finally,
we show that our prediction analysis is also robust by remarkably reducing the
accessible number of events used to construct the optimal predictor.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The direct detection of the irradiated brown dwarf in the white dwarf - brown dwarf binary SDSS J141126.20+200911.1
We have observed the eclipsing, post-common envelope white dwarf–brown dwarf binary,
SDSS141126.20+200911.1, in the near-IR with the HAWK-I imager, and present here the first
direct detection of the dark side of an irradiated brown dwarf in the H band, and a tentative
detection in the Ks band. Our analysis of the light curves indicates that the brown dwarf is
likely to have an effective temperature of 1300 K, which is not consistent with the effective
temperature of 800 K suggested by its mass and radius. As the brown dwarf is already absorbing
almost all the white dwarf emission in the Ks band, we suggest that this inconsistency may
be due to the UV-irradiation from the white dwarf inducing an artificial brightening in the Ks
band, similar to that seen for the similar system WD0137-349B, suggesting this brightening
may be characteristic of these UV-irradiated binaries
Social Network Analysis: Recent Achievements and Current Controversies
Network analysis has grown rapidly over the past two decades, but criticisms of the approach have increased as well This article focuses on several accomplishments and unresolved problems of the network approach In the first section. Thermoelectric effects in superconducting proximity structures
Attaching a superconductor in good contact with a normal metal makes rise to
a proximity effect where the superconducting correlations leak into the normal
metal. An additional contact close to the first one makes it possible to carry
a supercurrent through the metal. Forcing this supercurrent flow along with an
additional quasiparticle current from one or many normal-metal reservoirs makes
rise to many interesting effects. The supercurrent can be used to tune the
local energy distribution function of the electrons. This mechanism also leads
to finite thermoelectric effects even in the presence of electron-hole
symmetry. Here we review these effects and discuss to which extent the existing
observations of thermoelectric effects in metallic samples can be explained

Applications of scalar attractor solutions to Cosmology
We develop a framework to study the phase space of a system consisting of a
scalar field rolling down an arbitrary potential with varying slope and a
background fluid, in a cosmological setting. We give analytical approximate
solutions of the field evolution and discuss applications of its features to

Molecular velocity auto-correlation of simple liquids observed by NMR MGSE method
The velocity auto-correlation spectra of simple liquids obtained by the NMR
method of modulated gradient spin echo show features in the low frequency range
up to a few kHz, which can be explained reasonably well by a long
time tail decay only for non-polar liquid toluene, while the spectra of polar
liquids, such as ethanol, water and glycerol, are more congruent with the model
of diffusion of particles temporarily trapped in potential wells created by
their neighbors. As the method provides the spectrum averaged over ensemble of
particle trajectories, the initial non-exponential decay of spin echoes is
attributed to a spatial heterogeneity of molecular motion in a bulk of liquid,
reflected in distribution of the echo decays for short trajectories. While at
longer time intervals, and thus with longer trajectories, heterogeneity is
averaged out, giving rise to a spectrum which is explained as a combination of
molecular self-diffusion and eddy diffusion within the vortexes of hydrodynamic

The white dwarf binary pathways survey - IX. Three long period white dwarf plus subgiant binaries
Virtually all binaries consisting of a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion can be classified as either close post-interaction systems (with orbital periods of a few days or less), or wide systems (with periods longer than decades), in which both components have effectively evolved as single stars. Binaries with periods between these two extremes can help constrain common envelope efficiency, or highlight alternative pathways towards the creation of compact binaries. To date such binaries have remained mostly elusive. Here we present three white dwarfs in binaries with evolved subgiant stars with orbital periods of 41, 52 and 461 d. Using Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy we find that all three systems contain low mass white dwarfs (≤0.4 M⊙). One system, TYC 8394−1331 −1, is the inner binary of a hierarchical triple, where the white dwarf plus subgiant binary is orbited by a more distant companion star. These binaries were likely formed from a phase of stable but non-conservative mass transfer, as opposed to common envelope evolution. All three systems will undergo a common envelope phase in the future, but the two shorter period systems are expected to merge during this event, while the longest period system is likely to survive and create a close binary with two low mass white dwarfs
Reproductive Isolation in a Threespine Stickleback Hybrid Zone
In many estuarine sites, morphological and genetic differences between anadromous and freshwater threespine sticklebacks are maintained despite breeding in sympatry. Here, we investigate the maintenance of this morphological divergence in a natural hybrid zone in the River Tyne, Scotland. We provide a morphological description of the hybrid zone, and using a Bayesian MCMC approach, identified distinct anadromous and freshwater genetic clusters. Anadromous and freshwater sticklebacks breed in spatial and temporal sympatry in the lower reaches of the River Tyne. The frequency of hybrids within these sites (33%) indicates prezygotic isolation is not complete, and suggests that assortative mating is not strong. However, significant heterozygote deficit and cytonuclear disequilibrium in juveniles collected from sympatric sites confirms that barriers to gene flow exist between the morphs in the wild. In addition, we found no evidence of a directional bias in hybridisation, although hybrids with anadromous mothers were more common because anadromous females outnumbered freshwater females within the hybrid zone.
