ABSTRACT: This article seeks to contribute to the knowledge of Islam in the Colombian context, through ethnographic observations and narratives of individuals who have converted to said religion in Bogota. In addition to analyzing the motives for their conversion, it studies the way these people have constructed a new religious identity altering their perception of themselves, their system of beliefs and values, their behavior and their relation to the socio-cultural environment around them. It also examines the link between the private and the public spheres, between the symbolic and the political, that becomes visible when, by openly adhering to a religion that is usually stigmatized, a person resists the hegemonic forms of socialization in Colombian society.RESUMEN: Este artículo busca aportar al conocimiento del islam en el contexto colombiano a partir de observaciones etnográficas y narrativas de sujetos que se han convertido a esta religión en Bogotá.

Most scholarship uses political-institutional relations as an independent variable; therefore, TdS focuses on what takes place within the leadership of the institution and intermediate organizations. This research collects data directly from a century of baptism records in the city of Córdoba (Argentina) and compares it with the city’s birth rate. This analysis shows that the use of political-institutional variables fails to adequately explain religious dynamics, as measured in baptisms. The proposed hypothesis is that religious transformations are better understood when demographic variables are applied. Aquesta conferència és la celebració conjunta de la "10th Artificial Economics Conference AE", la "10th Conference of the European Social Simulation Association ESSA" i la "1st Simulating the Past to Understand Human History SPUHH".Conferència organitzada pel Laboratory for Socio-Historical Dynamics Simulation (LSDS-UAB) de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.Readers will find results of recent research on computational social science and social simulation economics, management, sociology, and history written by leading experts in the field. SOCIAL SIMULATION (former ESSA) conferences constitute annual events which serve as an international platform for the exchange of ideas and discussion of cutting edge research in the field of social simulations, both from the theoretical as well as applied perspective, and the 2014 edition benefits from the cross-fertilization of three different research communities into one single event. The volume consists of 122 articles, corresponding to most of the contributions to the conferences, in three different formats: short abstracts (presentation of work-in-progress research), posters (presentation of models and results), and full papers (presentation of social simulation research including results and discussion). The compilation is completed with indexing lists to help finding articles by title, author and thematic content. We are convinced that this book will serve interested readers as a useful compendium which presents in a nutshell the most recent advances at the frontiers of computational social sciences and social simulation researc

The awakening of the indigenous people of Latin America raises the following question: is it accom- panied by a religious revitalization and a return to an- cestral beliefs and rituals? Religion is, indeed, present in protests and visible movements such as those in Me- xico or Ecuador, but religion does not appear to be the principal factor or the deepest source of these move- ments. Thus, alongside the rapid expansion of evange- licals (especially Pentecostals) among the indigenous communities, it is also observed the higher profile and the increased respect achieved by ancestral indigenous religious traditions. Elsewhere, intense missionary acti- vity, performed by various churches, has contributed to the emergence of new indigenous leaders; shamanic rituals function as a means of reaffirmation of ethnic identity and support of the struggle to recover ancestral lands is acquiring a sacred character because of in- digenous worldview. The battle is political and ethnic; it is fought for recognition of indigenous rights, for the specificity of people and their communities, for their ancestral lands and for their cultural expression. Belief is by no means uniform among indigenous peoples. However, there is no doubt that religion is a part of the process of recovery concerning ethnic identity, even though it is under threat from globalization
