Mobility infrastructures in cities and climate change: An analysis through the superblocks in Barcelona

Cities are key actors in the fight against climate change since they are major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while at the same time they experience the negative impact of this phenomenon. Mitigating and adapting to climate change requires fundamental changes in urbanism and city automobile traffic. Superblocks, a grid of blocks and basic roads forming a polygon, approximately 400 by 400 m, are one of the instruments for such changes. These type of city Superblocks represent a new model of mobility that restructures the typical urban road network, thereby substantially reducing automobile traffic, and accordingly GHG emissions, while increasing green space in the city and improving the health and quality of life of its inhabitants.Furthermore, the Superblocks do not require investment in hard infrastructures, nor do they involvedemolishing buildings or undertaking massive development; they are in fact very low-tech urbanism.The city of Barcelona has been implementing Superblocks as one of the measures to combat climate change with very positive results. The paper analyzes the concept of the Superblock and its relation with climate change in cities. Along these lines, it analyzes the pioneer experience of Barcelona in the development and implementation of the Superblocks, as a radical plan aimed at taking back the streets from cars. The role of political power and institutional leadership has been key in societal acceptance and the achievement of tangible results. But there are also obstacles and drawbacks in the development of these types of Superblocks, such as the necessity to redesign the collective transport network so that car traffic can truly be reduced in cities, the possible negative influence on traffic going in and out of the city, the lack of visible advantages if they are not implemented in the entire city, the risk of gentrification in the areas with Superblocks, public opposition, and opposition from certain sectors of the business communityPostprint (published version

Rotura cuadricipital en edad pediátrica

La rotura del tendón del cuádriceps es una patología característica de la edad adulta, siendo excepcional en la infancia. Se presenta el caso de un niño de 9 años con una gonalgia izquierda de 2 meses de evolución sin claro antecedente traumático. Se realiza Resonancia Magnética, que establece el diagnóstico de rotura parcial del tendón del cuádriceps. Se decide reanclaje del mismo en el polo superior de la rótula, seguido de rehabilitación. Después del tratamiento quirúrgico realizado el paciente recupera el balance articular y muscular. La rotura del tendón del cuádriceps es excepcional en la edad pediátrica. La realización de una buena exploración, tanto clínica como radiológica es fundamental. El tratamiento viene determinado por el tipo de rotura y la clínica asociada. Hemos realizado una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura con el fin de dar a conocer este tipo de patología y su manejo.Rupture of the quadriceps tendon is a common pathology in adults, but exceptionally rare in children. The case reported is that of a 9-year old boy with a 2-month history of pain in the left knee without any clear history of trauma. Magnetic Resonance Imaging study was carried out, leading to the diagnosis of partial tear of the left quadricipital tendon. The tendon was re-anchored at the upper pole of the patella, followed by rehabilitation. The patient recovered joint and muscular balance after the surgery. Rupture of the quadriceps tendon is exceptionally rare at pediatric ages. A thorough examination, both clinical as well as radiological, is of fundamental importance. Treatment is determined by the kind of rupture and associated clinical symptoms. We have carried out a bibliographical review of the literature in order to offer a better understanding of this pathology and its treatment

Sarcoma fibroblástico mixoinflamatorio en el pie: presentación de un caso y revisión de la literatura

El Sarcoma Fibroblástico Mixoinflamatorio (SFMI) es un sarcoma de escasa frecuencia, que aparece habitualmente en adultos durante la cuarta y quinta década de la vida como una masa de partes blandas, subcutánea, indolora, de preferencia localizada en partes acras, aunque también puede presentarse en otras localizaciones. Se presenta el caso de una mujer de 35 años con una tumoración a nivel del primer espacio dorsal del pie derecho, indolora, de 4 meses de evolución sin antecedente traumático. Se realizó una exéresis quirúrgica de la lesión. El estudio de la anatomía patológica estableció el diagnóstico de Sarcoma Fibroblástico Mixoinflamatorio. Esta lesión es una tumoración rara, por lo que habitualmente su diagnóstico es a menudo tardío. Hemos realizado una revisión exhaustiva de la literatura con el fin de dar a conocer este tipo de tumoración y su manejo.Fibroblastic Mixoinflamatory Sarcoma is a malignant tumor of low frequency, developed in adults during the fourth and fifth decade of life as a soft tissue subcutaneous mass, usually painless, placed distally in the distal extremities. We report the case of a 35 years-old female with a painless tumour at the first dorsal space of the right foot, of 4 months evolution. She did not refer any trauma history. We removed the lump and sent the sample to pathology department, which established the diagnosis of Fibroblastic Mixoinflamatory Sarcoma. Fibroblastic Mixoinflamatory Sarcoma is a rare tumour, often misdiagnose. We carried out a thorough review of the literature to divulge this type of tumour and its management

La existencia de un cambio climático global (CC) está ya constatada en el informe científico del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC). Entre las causas de este, se encuentra la actividad humana junto con las causas naturales del planeta.
