781-786Multifunctional biological activities
of a glutathione
peroxidase mimic, diselenodinicotinamide (2, 2′-diselenobis-
[3-amidopyridine]) (SNA), as an antioxidant are evaluated for its ability to
inhibit free radical induced damage to biomolecules like lipids and DNA. Damage
to lipids has been assayed by lipid peroxidation and DNA damage by
gel-electrophoresis using AAPH or γ-radiation induced damage. The results
indicate that SNA, at micro-molar concentration, protects both lipids and DNA
from AAPH and γ-radiation induced damage. Also, SNA is non-toxic to normal
cells but slightly toxic to cancer cells. These results coupled with its water
solubility and GPx mimicking activity make
SNA a potential candidate for future in vivo studies as an antioxidant.
