Fission fragment angular distribution measurements of U-235 and U-238 at CERN n_TOF facility

Neutron-induced fission cross sections of U-238 and U-235 are used as standards in the fast neutron region up to 200 MeV. A high accuracy of the standards is relevant to experimentally determine other neutron reaction cross sections. Therefore, the detection efficiency should be corrected by using the angular distribution of the fission fragments (FFAD), which are barely known above 20 MeV. In addition, the angular distribution of the fragments produced in the fission of highly excited and deformed nuclei is an important observable to investigate the nuclear fission process. In order to measure the FFAD of neutron-induced reactions, a fission detection setup based on parallel-plate avalanche counters (PPACs) has been developed and successfully used at the CERN-n_TOF facility. In this work, we present the preliminary results on the analysis of new U-235(n,f) and U-238(n,f) data in the extended energy range up to 200 MeV compared to the existing experimental data.Postprint (published version

By integrating different omics levels (transcriptome, proteome and phenome), we were able to study Escherichia coli polyphosphate mutant strains (Δppk1, Δppx, and Δppk1-ppx). We have compiled here all datasets from DNA microarrys, q-proteomic (Isotope-Coded Protein Labeling, ICPL) and phenomic (Phenotype microarray) raw data we have obtained in all polyP metabolism mutants.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352340917300860?via%3Dihu

Non-fluorinated, sustainable, and durable superhydrophobic microarrayed surface for water-harvesting

Water scarcity is a worldwide issue that significantly affects the environment, population, and economy of the arid zones. In this study, we report a straightforward method for water-harvesting based on modifications of the surface wettability. Using magnesium chloride, lauric acid, and electrodeposition process, a superhydrophobic surface (155°) is obtained. Morphological characterization techniques allow determination of the characteristic flower-like microstructures combined with close packed nanoarrays that lead to the hierarchical structure. Furthermore, the coating presents vertically aligned microarrays in a non-linear cone morphology formed by dynamic templating of hydrogen bubbles. From a chemical point of view, magnesium laurate is responsible for the surface tension decrease. To determine the durability of the obtained surface ultra-violet (UV) light test and abrasive paper test, tests are carried out revealing high durability against these severe conditions. The water-harvesting ability of the superhydrophobic surface is studied at 45° and 90° tilted samples. The capacity of the water to be harvested efficiently is found to be at 90° tilt under fog conditions. The use of green reactants associated with this hierarchical structure broadens a new scope for sustainable freshwater collection and it becomes an excellent example of a green solution

High accuracy 235 U(n,f) data in the resonance energy region

The 235U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provide

[Abstract] Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate response and drug survival of biologic therapy in patients with moderate to severe plaque-type psoriasis who initiated biologic therapy at least 10 years ago, in a real-world setting. Methods: This was an observational retrospective follow-up study that included patients with moderate to severe plaque-type psoriasis who initiated biologic therapy between October 2006 and December 2009. Efficacy was expressed as the percentage of patients achieving a 50, 75 and 90% reduction from baseline in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 50, PASI 75, PASI 90, respectively) every 3 months during the first year of therapy and then every 12 months up to the end of follow-up or withdrawal from the study. Results: A total of 56 patients were included in the study, representing 140 treatment lines (median 2, range 1-8); of these patients, 53 were still receiving biologic therapy at the end of the study. The mean duration of biologic therapy was 140.4 (range 47.6-175.4) months. Etanercept was used in 98.2% of patients, followed by efalizumab (42.9%), adalimumab (41.1%), ustekinumab (33.9%) and infliximab (16.1%). Treatment lines were switched in 62.1% of treatments: 24.3% due to secondary failure, 20.7% due to primary failure and 3.6% due to side effects. No patient treated with anti-interleukins had to discontinue treatment due to side effects. Ustekinumab had the highest drug survival. Conclusions: This study in the real-world-setting shows maintenance of long-term efficacy and safety of biologic therapy in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in daily practice who initiated biologic therapy 10 years ago.The journal’s Rapid Service Fee was paid for by Fundación Profesor Novoa Santos (A Coruña.
