Non-axisymmetric relativistic Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a Kerr black hole

In our program of studying numerically the so-called Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the fully relativistic regime, we present here first results concerning the evolution of matter accreting supersonically onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. These computations generalize previous results where the non-rotating (Schwarzschild) case was extensively considered. We parametrize our initial data by the asymptotic conditions for the fluid and explore the dependence of the solution on the angular momentum of the black hole. Towards quantifying the robustness of our numerical results, we use two different geometrical foliations of the black hole spacetime, the standard form of the Kerr metric in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates as well as its Kerr-Schild form, which is free of coordinate singularities at the black hole horizon. We demonstrate some important advantages of using such horizon adapted coordinate systems. Our numerical study indicates that regardless of the value of the black hole spin the final accretion pattern is always stable, leading to constant accretion rates of mass and momentum. The flow is characterized by a strong tail shock, which, unlike the Schwarzschild case, is increasingly wrapped around the central black hole as the hole angular momentum increases. The rotation induced asymmetry in the pressure field implies that besides the well known drag, the black hole will experience also a lift normal to the flow direction. This situation exhibits some analogies with the Magnus effect of classical fluid dynamics.Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures, submited to MNRA

Resistant Hypertension Workup and Approach to Treatment

Resistant hypertension is defined as blood pressure above the patient's goal despite the use of 3 or more antihypertensive agents from different classes at optimal doses, one of which should ideally be a diuretic. Evaluation of patients with resistive hypertension should first confirm that they have true resistant hypertension by ruling out or correcting factors associated with pseudoresistance such as white coat hypertension, suboptimal blood pressure measurement technique, poor adherence to prescribed medication, suboptimal dosing of antihypertensive agents or inappropriate combinations, the white coat effect, and clinical inertia. Management includes lifestyle and dietary modification, elimination of medications contributing to resistance, and evaluation of potential secondary causes of hypertension. Pharmacological treatment should be tailored to the patient's profile and focus on the causative pathway of resistance. Patients with uncontrolled hypertension despite receiving an optimal therapy are candidates for newer interventional therapies such as carotid baroreceptor stimulation and renal denervation

Legal and Technical Issues for Text and Data Mining in Greece

Web harvesting and archiving pertains to the processes of collecting from the web and archiving of works that reside on the Web. Web harvesting and archiving is one of the most attractive applications for libraries which plan ahead for their future operation. When works retrieved from the Web are turned into archived and documented material to be found in a library, the amount of works that can be found in said library can be far greater than the number of works harvested from the Web. The proposed participation in the 2019 CEPE Conference aims at presenting certain issues related to the existing legal framework as well as technical/librarianship issues that apply to Web harvesting and archiving. The aforesaid proposed conference participation will elaborate upon the applicable legal framework with the aim to shed light upon what is legally sound and what is not in relation to web harvesting techniques and processes. It will also elaborate upon technicalities of TDM leveraged for the implementation of TDM. Currently, the EU Commission aims at promoting the efficient use of text and data mining (TDM) for scientific research purposes. Regarding TDM, the EU Commission opts for making Member States to provide for an exception to the rights provided for in article 2 of Directive 2001/29/EC, articles 5(a) and 7(1) of Directive 96/9/EC and article 11(1) of the proposed Directive for reproductions and extractions made by research organizations in order to carry out text and data mining of works or other subject-matter to which they have lawful access for the purposes of scientific research. Thus, regarding TDM in the EU legal environment, the new Directive considers text and data mining to be an exception to the reproduction right of Copyright aimed solely for research. The exception for scientific research can, in certain circumstances, cover the acts of reproduction performed in the course of data analysis activities even in the existing “acquis communataire” through the provision of article 5(3) of Directive 2001/29/EC. Web harvesting and archiving in Greek academic libraries is at its embryonic stage, currently, at least in consideration of article 4§4(b) of Law 4452/2017 which rules that the National Library of Greece is empowered with the right to deploy TDM in Greece and to oversee the deployment of TDM through other libraries. For academic libraries in Greece, the research upon the methods and applications for web harvesting as well as upon the policies related to said subject matter is of special interest. Legal stumbling blocks exist, both with respect to the data collection in the Web harvesting phase as well as to data sharing in the archiving and making available to the public of the Web harvested output

The step project:societal and political engagement of young people in environmental issues

Decisions on environmental topics taken today are going to have long-term consequences that will affect future generations. Young people will have to live with the consequences of these decisions and undertake special responsibilities. Moreover, as tomorrow’s decision makers, they themselves should learn how to negotiate and debate issues before final decisions are made. Therefore, any participation they can have in environmental decision making processes will prove essential in developing a sustainable future for the community.However, recent data indicate that the young distance themselves from community affairs, mainly because the procedures involved are ‘wooden’, politicians’ discourse alienates the young and the whole experience is too formalized to them. Authorities are aware of this fact and try to establish communication channels to ensure transparency and use a language that speaks to new generations of citizens. This is where STEP project comes in.STEP (www.step4youth.eu) is a digital Platform (web/mobile) enabling youth Societal and Political e-Participation in decision-making procedures concerning environmental issues. STEP is enhanced with web/social media mining, gamification, machine translation, and visualisation features.Six pilots in real contexts are being organised for the deployment of the STEP solution in 4 European Countries: Italy, Spain, Greece, and Turkey. Pilots are implemented with the direct participation of one regional authority, four municipalities, and one association of municipalities, and include decision-making procedures on significant environmental questions.</p
